Chapter 247: Who is pregnant?
The Paris memory recollection sessions lasted until evening. The queen invited her hypnosis experts in, and got as much information as she could out of the Rocland’s and Mrs. Miller. And when she was finished, she rewarded everyone with tribute foods from the royal kitchens.
After she left with her people, everyone could finally breathe easily.
"No sleep all night and then this for a whole day!" Sienna groaned, rubbing her shoulders. "I am so tired. This was very taxing on me."
Many eyes of her relatives rolled her eyes. While they had been pocked with syringes, and had their memories prodded, she had been napping in a rocking chair with Ali! They had been covered by two soft blankets and the chair was lined with three soft furs to create a thin but comfortable mattress. So how was she tired?
Sienna yawned. "Time for dinner and some real sleep," she declared.
A whole lot of jaws dropped. They couldn’t believe what they were witnessing when she pulled Ali to the couch and they laid down, to watch Detective Mochi Paws.
On the way to the kitchen, grandma Jess asked Mrs. Miller, "Was she always this lazy?"
Mrs. Miller smiled softly, "Actually, she used to be so hardworking. So much so that I had to beg her to rest. She would go to school, come home and do chores, tutor others, practice her dance, prepare dinner and then review her schoolwork." Her smile trembled, "I was a bit of an incapable mother so she suffered with me. She used to sleep for only 5 to 6 hours a day. Now, she sleeps whenever she wants. The gods must be rewarding her for all she suffered."
Jess touched Mrs. Miller’s back, "Don’t blame yourself, blame the man that promised to provide and then abandoned you both. You tried your best. If you had not gone out to earn a wage, who would pay the bills?"
They stopped at the kitchen counter, near the sink. Mrs. Miller pulled a basket of fresh cabbage and started ripping off the leaves. "Well, now I get to drown my guilt in making her a salad."
Jess laughed. Grandma Byra joined them, as did the rest of the falcon aunts, including Numia. The relatives filled up the kitchen, assigning themselves tasks for dinner. Shalin had to make the other cooks relocate to the outside kitchen.
"Whose idea was it to live at the seaside?" Jess asked. "This place is like a freezer in winter. I think everyone should go back to the estate with us."
"We can’t abandon the greenhouses." Grandma Byra objected quickly.
Numia slammed a cup on the counter, "She didn’t eat! The queen said she was hungry and I sacrificed my hands and time to prepare lunch for her but she didn’t touch it. Does she have something against my cooking?"
"Yes, it sucks." Linera replied sarcastically.
The rest sniggered. Those who knew Numia were aware that she was not a great cook, and yet, she still forced her way into the kitchen to personally handle the food meant for the queen. Knowing her bad motives, the queen had not touched the hamburger and potato wedges Numia presented.
She chose to eat a portion from the chicken salad Shalin prepared for Sienna.
Numia shoved the platter of meat skewers away and stomped her foot. "I am not cooking anymore, I am going to sleep too. Wake me up when it’s time to eat."
Hardly had she made it to the door when Linera pulled her back. Grandma Byra gave her a warning look. "Numia, this house doesn’t support lazy people, you are always looking for a way to get out of your work. Better be honest for me and work properly."
Again, Numia stomped her foot. Her eyes instantly turned reddish, on the brink of teary outburst. "Mother, why can Sienna sleep all day but I can’t? She is younger than me. Shouldn’t she be in here?"
"Because she pays your salary." Linera answered flatly.
To no one’s shock, Numia started to sniffle, for no reason at all really.
Jess raised her brows and snorted. She looked at grandma Byra with pity. "You have a troublesome one too, huh!" In her opinion, this one was worse than Cadelaria in some ways. The stories of her attempts to climb the ladder through her son had made the waves in noble circles.
Grandma Byra sighed. "A dead son who was a a rebel and a stupid daughter-in-law. I have two troublesome ones."
"At least one is dead." Jess replied. "My condolences."
Byra was about to reply when Numia sat on the ground, kicking her feet like a toddler in the midst of a tantrum. "I want to sleep too. I want to be lazy too. I am pregnant too, why can’t you be more considerate of me?"
Grandma Byra’s knife slid across the counter. The rest of the women turned to look at her.
"You are pregnant!" Grandma Byra screeched loudly.
Jess pulled Grandma Byra’s sleeve. "What does she mean by pregnant too? Is Sienna pregnant?"
Eli, who had leaped his way to the kitchen stopped at the door. Loudly, he screamed in shock. "Mama is pregnant! She is having another baby! Why?"
Focus shifted from Numia to the boy.
"What do you mean why?" Jess asked, abandoning her tasks to go and find Sienna. She took Eli’s arm, dragging the boy along. The grin on her face was so wide that her lips almost touched her eyes. "This is wonderful news. It is the best news I have heard since the day you and your sister were born. Our family is getting another member and your uncle is getting married. You could have a cousin next year. This is wonderful, so wonderful." She was so excited that she screamed out of the window to the men on the porch, "Sienna is pregnant. Did you all know this? I cannot believe I am the last to know."
Eli blinked, it was news to him too. If anyone was the last to know, it was him.
But he was wrong, because the glass in his father’s hand shattered. Elias turned slowly, a myriad of emotions in his eyes. "Who...who is pregnant?" His heart was thudding like a drum as he rose. "I didn’t hear you right grandma. Did you say my wife is pregnant?"
Jess nodded, the grin on her face stuck there as if it had been painted on. "Yes, your wife is pregnant."
In the living room, Sienna rubbed her eyes. Jess’s loud voice was hard to miss. "Who is pregnant?" She muttered.
