Chapter 246: Any and all information.
Jess, Jesse and the children arrived just as the ship taking the stone and experts was leaving. Ali was quick to latch on to Sienna, rubbing her head against her mother as if she had missed her deeply.
"Mama, you left me again." She complained.
Sienna patted the girl’s back, "Mama had important business to take care of."
Ali lifted her head and shot her father a look. "Next time, leave such business to papa."
Elias pretended to be wounded while most of the adults laughed. They made their way into the house where breakfast was served at the table. Because the queen had declared that she was joining them, it was heavy laden, with a variety of foods.
Some people sat around the dining table, but it could not fit them all, and others moved to the living room or the kitchen.
Naturally, Sienna sat next to the queen. As she had just filled up on coffee and bagels, she settled for fruits and playful mockery. "So, what next? Are we planning to interrogate my jam jars too?" she asked, voice dripping with sarcasm.
The queen ignored her jab and turned to the falcon elders and Mrs. Miller. "After what has happened, there is no reason for us to pretend anymore. We are aware of Paris Rocland’s past and we want everything related to him. Letters, trinkets, memories, even rumors. In exchange, the royal family will never use his crimes against your family."
"Crimes?" Eli said loudly.
"Crimes?" Sienna repeated. "Our family was not involved in anything. It will be very difficult to make anything stick Serenya, and you know this."
Elias cleared his throat.
Grandpa Corven swooped in. "Your Highness, we...we don’t know much. He kept secrets even from us. Like his movements, why he dropped out of school and the existence of his oldest children."
The queen looked at Mrs. Miller. "What about you? Paris Rocland loved you enough to start a family with you."
Mrs. Miller trembled. "He didn’t start a family with me, he lied to me and got me pregnant and then he fled. I raised my children on my own. This is public knowledge. I have nothing to do with that man."
Sienna raised her brows. Gone were the days when her mother spoke of Paris with wistfulness in her eyes. She was eager to scrub their history completely clean going forward.
Grandma Byra leaned forward. "Even if we do know something, it is only fragments. Like he had bad friends, but we don’t know who they were. He said he was starting a business fifteen years ago and conned us out of three hundred thousand beast coins, but we don’t know if he actually started a business because we never saw our money back."
"It was a quarter of their life savings!" Linera hissed. "I should have ripped out his feathers. Paris was a grifter, he was never going to start a business. He probably invested that money in the rebel movement."
The queen’s eyes narrowed. "This is the kind of information we need. What you don’t realize is that if money like that is found and it is linked to you, then you could be considered co-conspirators. When we are untangling a web like this, we have to look carefully into the family of the rebel. It is always a risk leaving a shadow of treason lingering in the bloodline. We cannot allow that."
Sienna raised her fork. "And we support you. We just don’t appreciate being spied on all the time." She rolled her eyes, "Seriously, how could you come over claiming a box addressed to my mother was meant for you!"
The queen grimaced. "Well...I had to say something." She cleared her throat. "And we found a suspicious stone, so I was right."
Sienna snorted.
"I have some old pictures of Paris when he was in school, a year before he dropped out. They are from the time he joined the music scene." Uncle Jorik pitched in all the way from the entrance to the kitchen. "That was probably around the time he was recruited. Will they help?"
The queen nodded. "That is excellent. See...this deal is a bargain. Anything you give us will contribute to your innocence. You will even get a reward for any rebels in hiding that we capture thanks to your information."
Sienna muttered, "Lovely. A royal pardon for crimes we don’t understand and money. I think I like the second part better. Give me a weapon and I will join the royal agents."
"Take me mama." Ali chipped in.
Elias shot them both a look that made it clear they would not be going anywhere.
Out of the blue, Mrs. Miller volunteered information. "I followed him once, because I thought he was cheating on me." Her eyes flashed to Sienna. "I was seven months pregnant at the time, and he kept sneaking out at night. He wouldn’t commit or tell me about his family. I started to wonder if he was married and lying to me."
"What did you see?" The queen cut in.
She sighed. "He went to a supermarket and sat sat down with a deer beast woman. They talked for around ten minutes, he handed her a phone and left. It wasn’t his phone...I know that because it was a pink heart shaped phone. The kind teenage girls used to love back then.
The next day, I went to that supermarket and saw that beast woman. She was the manager there, I don’t remember her name. I wanted to ask if she was his wife, but I didn’t have the courage.
It took me a week to mention her to Paris. I claimed Mrs. Wiener had seen together and mentioned it to me. He said she was the wife of a friend and he run into her while buying milk so he stopped to say hello." She laughed dryly, the kind of laughter that said I am an idiot. "Now that I think about it, he didn’t buy any milk. He didn’t buy anything at all."
Sienna rolled her eyes. "Duh! He was passing along information."
The queen listened intently, her breakfast untouched. "We will investigate, but you have to give us more details. You have my word, you and your children will never be affected by his actions. We will not publicize his crimes. Your lives will remain as peaceful as they have been. Anything personal you reveal will remain between us. The king will receive only the facts, not the gossip. You have my word on this too."
Elias and Sienna traded an understanding look. The king had his own spies in their household. Could the queen’s word be counted on?
