Chapter 248: Not pregnant.
It didn’t take more than a minute for Sienna and Ali to find themselves surrounded. Jess and Jesse were already making a fuss. Marius was calling for a doctor. Eli was sulking and Elias was speechless, but the frost in his eyes seemed to be permanent. His jaw was clenched so hard that it could grind bone into dust.
In his silence, Sienna could hear many questions. He was choosing not to question her before his family and hers, to avoid embarrassing them both.
"It explains the laziness," Jess said with the assurance of an expert on pregnancy. Her voice trembled with excitement. "And her glow! Look at her, she is outshining the moon."
Sienna’s lips twitched. Glow? She was simply stress free, thanks to the bees, pans, the healthy allowance her husband gave her monthly, and all the servants who took care of her daily needs. Anyone would glow if they were living her life. But before she could speak, the elders leaned forward, their eyes gleaming like merchants spotting a profitable deal.
"We should prepare the gifts," Jesse ordered. "A pearl from the River Gardens Mer tribe. A pregnancy smoothing tonic from the Phoenix tribe. Some silk swaddles from the royal family. No expense shall be spared to make Sienna comfortable. Elias, what else should we purchase?"
Elias stood stiffly, his frosty gaze still on Sienna, suspicion dripping from every glance. He thought of all the men Sienna interacted with regularly and the only one that came to mind was Geo. His heart clenched. A pregnancy was proof of infidelity that could not be hidden. If the cub was born, it would be a wolf! His family would never live this shame down. It was worse than what his mother had done.
Eli, answered for his father, looking horrified. "Mama, what were you thinking? A sibling? You two hardly qualify to parent me and my disaster of a sister. I am not ready for this!" He clutched his head dramatically. "Mama, tell them it’s false! I still need time to train my logic before I can handle a baby’s crying."
Ali, oblivious to it all because she had somehow slept off again, just smiled in her sleep.
Sienna waited. She let the grandparents finish their grand orders, let the payments be secured and the voices to settle down. Only when they were calmer did she finally speak up. "I am not pregnant." She said firmly.
They all froze. A pin could have dropped and echoed like thunder. Eli leapt up, relief flooding his face.
"Thank the fox god! I can sleep in peace tonight!" He hugged her leg, whispering, "Mama, you have done well."
But disbelief rippled through the room. The falcon aunts, her mother and grandmother exchanged sly looks, shaking their heads. Jesse and Jess frowned, unwilling to accept her words after imagining their fictional great grandchild.
Elias’s eyes narrowed, colder than winter frost. "Are you sure?"
Sienna straightened her back, her gaze unwavering. "You would know better than anyone if I was pregnant or not. The truth does not bend to your suspicions. Aren’t you all beast men? Can’t you use your smelling senses to detect pregnancy?"
A lot of nostrils twitched, following her words. The doctor Marius had summoned examined Sienna with solemn precision, then bowed deeply.
"My lords, my ladies...Sienna is not with child."
The room erupted. Gasps, protests and embarrassed coughs filled the air. Jess and Jesse looked as though they had swallowed bitter herbs. The servants who had whispered and gossiped about the pregnancy shuffled awkwardly. The nannies who had been expected a raise in their salary felt betrayed.
Eli danced in victory, chanting, "No sibling! No sibling!"
Ali woke up confused. "Wait...so no baby? Then who will eat the cakes I have been hiding in my closet?"
"You knew!" Eli exclaimed.
Ali nodded. "Nanny Fortunate said I was going to be a big sister and I should eat less and save more food for the baby."
Sienna allowed herself a smile. "Aww, you sweet little angel. You will make a wonderful big sister someday, but that day has not arrived."
Elias moved to the couch, sitting beside them. The frost in his eyes had melted, replaced with a flicker of shame for doubting her.
Jess and Jesse cleared their throats, trying to salvage pride.
"Well...since the gifts are already ordered, they shall remain in the household." Jesse said, "Put them in your treasury. Consider them investments."
Sienna inclined her head politely, though inside she was laughing. Investments indeed. The old man had just ordered for a cradle, charms, pregnancy tonics and silks for a baby who did not exist. He figured they would be used for the next baby anyway.
Eli said gleefully, "We can use the cradle for Honey Thunder’s new bee babies. They deserve nice things too."
Sienna chuckled softly, her eyes glinting with mischief. "That’s true. And we can livestream it for the whole world to see. Bees sleeping in a cradle that costs 50,000 beast coins!"
The false pregnancy saga was about to die when Numia walked forward, with one hand on her waist and a smug smile. She was pushing her belly forward, as if to prove that she was pregnant, despite not showing yet. Her other hand rested dramatically on her belly and her eyes gleamed with schemes.
"Well," she drawled, "since Sienna is not pregnant, it would be wasteful to keep those things locked in a room, sitting unused. Who knows when she will have a child again? And bees using such a precious cradle is just stupid. I am with child. Surely, my baby will need it more. The smoothing tonic and all those things, I need them more."
The room fell silent. Shock rippled through the family. The elders, aunts, cousins all exchanged incredulous looks. The uncles muttered under their breath, and Soren snorted so loudly it echoed. Elias’s demeanor cracked into visible disdain.
Grandpa Corven’s face darkened, but it was grandma Byra who rose, her cane striking the floor with a sharp crack. Her voice thundered through the room, laced with fury and disappointment.
"You..you...." she growled, "What is wrong with you? If you want anything, you can ask me and your father-in-law. You can ask your husband. Why would you target gifts meant for your niece? Have you no shame? You are insulting everyone here and the dignity of our Rocland family. Do you have to make us look like beggars before you are satisfied? Do you think we are merchants haggling in the market, tossing treasures to whoever begs loudest?"
Numia’s smile faltered. She stammered, "I only thought....."
