Chapter 88: The Tribe’s Greatest Support

Maeve was stunned because just a moment ago, Cerus had been so far away from her. Yet in the blink of an eye, he was suddenly standing right in front of her.

She couldn’t help but wonder just how fast he could run.

Still, this wasn’t the time to think about that. After all, fighting off the Pyrax was far more important.

"If that’s your choice, then we’ll have no choice but to kill you," one of the Pyrax warriors said.

They charged at Cerus together, hoping to overwhelm him with numbers. But instead of being pushed back, Cerus only became fiercer. He cut them down one after another, never letting a single enemy get close to Maeve and Lior, who were safely behind him.

"You picked the wrong time," Cerus said coldly. His golden eyes shone with a dangerous light every time his weapon took another enemy’s head. "The moment we buried a part of our baby’s placenta in the ground, you were already dead the second you stepped into our territory."

Pinky suddenly appeared in front of Maeve with an excited grin.

[Pinky’s information to the rescue!]

[An hour after the Azuryn Tribe buried the baby’s placenta, the Aether Energy had already spread throughout the entire Lumivale Forest.]

[Anyone can draw Aether Energy from anywhere, but only the people who belong to a land can use all of the Aether Energy within their own homeland.]

[In other words, the Azuryn Tribe are the only ones who can use the full power of the Aether Energy in this forest!]

"But shouldn’t the Pyrax know about that rule too?" Maeve asked. "They should have the same rule in their own territory, right?"

[Of course they do, Host!] Pinky replied with a confident nod. [But they have no idea that the Azuryn Tribe has an Aether Amplifier.]

Maeve frowned in confusion. "An Aether Amplifier?"

[An Aether Amplifier is someone who can strengthen the Aether Energy of every ally within their territory.] Pinky explained. [How long the effect lasts depends on the user. In the Azuryn Tribe, the current Aether Amplifier can keep everyone’s Aether Energy boosted for at least thirty minutes, starting from this very moment.]

Maeve finally understood what Pinky meant, but another question quickly came to her mind. "Who is the Aether Amplifier?"

[Can’t you feel it, Host?] Pinky asked with a smile. [Even though your ability hasn’t awakened yet, you should already be able to sense Aether Energy.]

Maeve slowly lowered her gaze. The moment her eyes fell on the ground, she realized that a warm, invisible current had been flowing beneath her feet this whole time.

It moved through the ground like countless tiny streams, spreading in every direction before gathering around the Azuryn warriors.

She couldn’t see it clearly, yet somehow, she could feel it. The flow of energy was calm and gentle, but at the same time, it carried an overwhelming power.

"Oh..." Maeve whispered. "I can feel it."

The energy continued to rush through the ground, flowing into Cerus and the other warriors. The instant it reached them, their movements became even faster, and every attack hit with far greater strength than before.

Then Maeve suddenly noticed something else. "Wait..." she murmured. "I think I can see faint golden threads too."

The golden threads were barely visible, appearing only for a brief moment before fading away again.

[That’s right, Host!] Pinky said excitedly. [When Aether Energy is amplified, it sometimes gives off a faint golden glow.]

Her gaze slowly shifted toward Ikarus, who was fighting not far away. Then she realized that the same energy wasn’t just flowing into him, but it was flowing from him.

Golden strands of Aether Energy spread from Ikarus’s body like countless roots, sinking into the ground before branching out across the battlefield. They connected every Azuryn warrior together, constantly feeding them more and more power.

Maeve’s eyes widened in shock. "Ikarus is the Aether Amplifier?"

[That’s right, Host!] Pinky replied proudly. [He’s the heart of the tribe’s Aether Energy. As long as he continues amplifying it, every Azuryn warrior fighting within their homeland will keep getting stronger.]

Maeve stared at Ikarus in disbelief because he wasn’t just boosting everyone’s Aether Energy, but he was also fighting on the front lines like every other warrior, cutting through enemy after enemy without slowing down.

"Maeve!" Cerus’s shout pulled her back to reality. She quickly turned toward the battlefield.

"Are you alright?!" he called from a distance.

Maeve blinked in surprise because while she had been distracted, Cerus had already killed nearly every Pyrax warrior around him. Severed heads and lifeless bodies were scattered across the ground, painting the battlefield in blood.

Her eyes widened, and she quickly covered Lior’s eyes with one hand.

"I-I’m fine!" she called back, her voice trembling slightly.

No matter how much she had prepared herself for this world, seeing so many severed heads with her own eyes was still something she could never get used to.

After all, back on Earth, cops caught criminals and they didn’t butcher them.

"Stay right there! It won’t be long!" Cerus shouted to her again.

Maeve quickly nodded and gave him a thumbs-up, letting him know she understood.

What she hadn’t expected was that when Cerus said it wouldn’t take long, he had meant every word.

In less than fifteen minutes, the battle was over.

The Pyrax had been completely crushed and the same people who had arrived full of confidence, believing they could wipe out the entire Azuryn Tribe and kidnap Maeve, were now lying defeated on the ground.

Those who were still alive could only grit their teeth and cry in despair as they realized they had lost everything.

"Go back where you belong before we decide to kill every last one of you," Axan warned coldly.

His voice was even colder than usual, making the surviving Pyrax warriors shiver.

Not a single one of them dared to argue or beg for mercy. The moment Axan finished speaking, they scrambled to their feet and fled in panic like headless chickens.

Maeve watched them disappear into the distance before turning to the triplets.

"Is this... their first time attacking the Azuryn Tribe?" she couldn’t help asking.

If they had attacked before, they should have known by now that the Azuryn Tribe wasn’t an enemy they could easily provoke.

Axan shook his head. "This isn’t the first time we’ve clashed with the Pyrax Tribe," he said calmly. "But it is the first time they’ve openly attacked our tribe and tried to steal our wife."

Cerus nodded. "That’s right. Before this, we usually only ran into them while hunting or fighting over territory," Cerus continued. "Those fights never grew into a full attack on either tribe."

"They always knew where the line was," Axan added. "We fought, then went our separate ways."

Maeve frowned. "So... what changed?"

The three brothers fell silent.

After a few seconds, Ikarus wiped the blood from his spear and looked toward the direction the Pyrax warriors had escaped. "They’ve become desperate."

His voice was calm, but there was a hint of concern in it. "Their tribe has been struggling for years. Food has become scarce, and more of their children are being born weak."

Cerus let out a tired sigh. "They’ve been searching for a way to survive, but unlike us, who struggle to have children because we haven’t found our mates, their problem is that they treat their females terribly."

Maeve frowned. "What do you mean?"

"The females of the Pyrax Tribe have very low status," Cerus explained. "They’re expected to obey the males no matter what. Most of them spend their lives giving birth and taking care of the tribe."

"They’re not allowed to make their own decisions," Axan added. "Some are even forced to mate with males they don’t want."

Maeve hissed softly. Deep down, she had expected people in a primitive world to treat women badly, but then she realized that even in the modern world she came from, there were still countless men who treated women just as cruelly.

Maeve finally looked at them and asked, "Is that why they’re having trouble having children?"

Ikarus nodded. "Most of the babies die in their mothers’ wombs," he said. "Because of that, the placentas can never be used to restore the Aether Energy."

"They blame their females for having weak wombs," Cerus said with a frown. "But I believe it’s because they treat them so badly. The mothers are overworked, neglected, and forced to keep giving birth. Their bodies never get the chance to recover."

Axan nodded in agreement. "A healthy mother is the foundation of a healthy child," he said. "If they keep treating their females like tools, nothing will change."

He added, "But in the end, that’s their tribe’s problem, and we can only take care of ours. The most important thing is that we don’t become like them."

It saddened Maeve that there was no system in this world to protect women like them. But she also realized that in a harsh world like this, luck was still one of the biggest things that decided whether someone could live a good life.
