Chapter 87: Surrounded by Madmen
Without thinking twice, Maeve immediately put the necklace around her neck. Right after that, someone from the Pyrax Tribe fired an arrow at her, but it missed by just a few inches from her face.
That was incredibly lucky!
Pinky sounded thrilled. [Since you also have the passive skill A Lucky Charm, this necklace will make your luck even stronger, Host!]
On the other hand, the women surrounding Maeve were furious when they saw the arrow.
"How dare you shoot an arrow at our Goddess!" Oraya shouted, her eyes blazing with anger. She immediately left Maeve’s side to chase away the Pyrax people who had almost killed her.
Soon, more and more Pyrax warriors began attacking Maeve and the women protecting her. The battlefield quickly turned into chaos, forcing them to split up.
Even worse, the moment the Pyrax warriors spotted an opening, they immediately started chasing after Maeve.
"Why are you chasing me?!" Maeve shouted at the top of her lungs. "Go away! My son and I won’t bring you any benefit!"
Holding Lior tightly in her arms, Maeve ran as fast as she could, desperately trying to get away from the battlefield, but no matter where she ran, fighting broke out everywhere she looked.
From a distance, she caught sight of Cerus and Ikarus struggling to hold back the Pyrax warriors, who kept throwing their weapons at them without giving them a single moment to breathe.
It wasn’t because the Pyrax were stronger. The real problem was that they still outnumbered the Azuryn people.
On top of that, they fought like fearless barbarians. They didn’t care about pain or their own lives. As long as they could kill their enemies, they would do anything.
Some of them could even keep running after one of their legs had been chopped off.
"You’re insane!" Maeve shouted as she watched a Pyrax warrior continue chasing her even though one of his arms had just been cut off.
But she didn’t have time to think about it because several more Pyrax warriors were already running toward her.
Their bloodshot eyes were locked on the baby in her arms rather than on her.
"There she is!"
"Don’t let her escape!"
Maeve’s heart pounded harder in her chest. Without a second thought, she turned and ran toward a place filled with large rocks and huts where she could hide more easily.
But just as Pinky had warned her, the necklace’s side effect had already kicked in. Maeve had become clumsy. She kept tripping over rocks and uneven ground, nearly falling several times.
The constant jolts finally made Lior burst into frightened cries.
"It’s okay... Mommy’s here," Maeve whispered between heavy breaths, holding him even tighter. "I won’t let anyone take you."
"Hey, little one, don’t run so far!" one of the Pyrax warriors shouted with a grin. "Just come with us! We’ll take good care of you and your baby."
Maeve wasn’t stupid enough to believe a single word they said.
Instead of slowing down, she pushed herself to run even faster. She didn’t even care how many times she stumbled or how badly her feet hurt because right now, only one thought filled her mind: she had to keep herself and Lior alive until one of her mates could reach them.
Her breathing grew heavier with every step. Maeve’s legs were burning, and her arms ached from holding Lior so tightly. Even so, she refused to slow down.
Behind her, the Pyrax warriors were getting closer. "I can still catch her!"
"Don’t let the baby out of your sight!"
Their voices echoed through the settlement, making Maeve’s heart pound even faster.
"No... No..."
She forced herself to keep moving, but suddenly, her foot caught on a dying tree root.
"Ah!"
Maeve stumbled forward, but instead of falling, she threw herself against a nearby tree and managed to steady her balance. Lior cried even louder, frightened by the sudden movement.
"I’m sorry..." she whispered, gently rocking him as she continued running. "Just a little longer..."
But this time, her legs were truly giving out because she had stumbled so many times that every step sent a sharp pain through her feet. Her breathing became ragged, and her body felt heavier with each passing second.
’I can’t...’ she spoke in her mind. ’No... I have to keep going...’
Just as Maeve forced herself to take another step, a rough hand suddenly grabbed her arm.
"I’ve got you now!" one of the Pyrax warriors shouted with a cruel grin after finally catching up to her.
Maeve’s eyes widened. "Let go of me!"
She struggled with all her strength, twisting her body as she held Lior tightly against her chest. But the Pyrax warrior’s grip was like iron.
"Hahaha! Stop struggling!" he laughed. "You’ll only make this harder on yourself."
Another Pyrax warrior quickly ran over, his greedy eyes fixed on the crying baby. "So that’s the child..."
A dark smile spread across his face as he looked at Maeve. "I can smell it," he said. "You’re an incredibly fertile woman."
His eyes slowly swept over her, making Maeve’s skin crawl.
"Since we can’t get your baby’s placenta..." he continued with a cruel laugh, "...we’ll just make you carry another baby instead."
Maeve’s eyes flew open the moment she heard those words.
A cold shiver raced down her spine, and every hair on her body stood on end. For the first time since the chase began, real fear completely took over her heart.
Even when the triplets had wanted her to carry their children, they had never looked this terrifying.
The desire in the Pyrax warriors’ eyes wasn’t filled with love or longing. It was nothing but greed. Fear. And something far more horrifying.
Maeve’s breathing turned uneven. "No..." she whispered, clutching Lior even tighter. "Don’t you dare touch us."
The Pyrax warriors only laughed. "You still have the strength to glare at us?" one of them mocked. "Good. We prefer women who can survive."
The man holding her arm tightened his grip until Maeve winced in pain.
"Let me go!" she cried, struggling with all the strength she had left.
She kicked at his leg, but he barely moved. Lior’s cries grew louder, his tiny hands clutching the front of Maeve’s clothes as if he could sense the danger surrounding them.
"It’s okay..." Maeve whispered, though her own voice was shaking. "Mommy’s here."
She quickly looked around, desperately searching for anything she could use.
A rock, a broken spear, or anything.
But before she could make a move, another Pyrax warrior stepped in front of her, blocking the only path left.
"Stop wasting your energy," he sneered. "No one is coming to save you."
Maeve bit her lip so hard that she could taste blood.
Her eyes darted around in desperation and saw that everyone was still fighting the Pyrax warriors. Ikarus, Cerus, Axan, and the others were trying their best to break through, but the Pyrax kept blocking their paths, refusing to let anyone reach her.
Knowing that no one could come to her rescue, Maeve finally threw all her weight forward and slammed her forehead into the face of the warrior holding her.
"Argh!"
The man cried out in pain as blood poured from his nose. His grip loosened for just a moment.
Maeve didn’t hesitate to freed herself from them. She yanked her arm free, turned around, and ran.
"Catch her!"
"Don’t let her get away again!"
The sound of dozens of footsteps thundered behind her as the chase began once more.
Unfortunately, this time, Maeve couldn’t run as fast as before.
Her feet were throbbing after stumbling over and over again, and her arm had already turned purple from how tightly the Pyrax warrior had grabbed it.
No matter how hard she forced her aching body to move, the distance between them kept shrinking.
Damn it! Her legs were too short compared to theirs!
A rough hand suddenly grabbed the back of her clothes.
"Got you!"
Maeve stumbled backward, nearly dropping Lior. "No!"
She quickly pulled him closer to her chest, refusing to let go no matter what.
The Pyrax warrior reached out with a wicked grin. "Give me the baby."
Maeve shook her head fiercely. "Never!"
Just as the warrior’s fingers were about to touch her—CRASH!
A sharp spear suddenly burst through his chest from behind. The blood-covered spearhead stopped only inches away from Maeve’s face.
The Pyrax warrior froze. His eyes widened in disbelief as he slowly looked down at the weapon piercing through his body.
"W-What?"
A familiar voice, filled with rage, echoed from behind him. "Take your filthy hands off my wife."
Cerus yanked the spear back in one swift motion. Blood sprayed across the ground as the Pyrax warrior collapsed at Maeve’s feet without another sound.
"C-Cerus..." Maeve’s trembling voice barely came out.
Cerus’s chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. His clothes were stained with blood, and several fresh wounds covered his body again, but the moment his eyes landed on Maeve and Lior, the fury in them softened with relief.
"If any of you want to touch them..." His voice was low, but every word carried murderous intent. "You’ll have to step over my dead body first."
