Chapter 86: (Not) Vulnerable People
Maeve froze in place when she received that kind of mission. She finally realized that there was something even more difficult than bearing a child. It was protecting him!
She didn’t even have any special combat abilities, so how could she possibly keep Lior safe and make sure that 90% of the people behind her survived?
[The mission never says you have to do it alone, Host!] Pinky quickly reminded her. [As long as you complete the mission, it doesn’t matter how you do it! That includes asking your mates for help!]
Oh... right.
If the side mission would still count whether it was completed because of her or because of her husbands, then maybe she didn’t need to panic so much.
Ikarus and Cerus were more than strong enough to stop the Pyrax from breaking into the settlement.
As long as they were there, everyone should be safe—BAM!
A loud crash suddenly echoed through the air. Maeve immediately looked up toward the source of the sound.
The moment her eyes found the reason for that loud noise, her heart skipped a beat.
She never expected to see a group of red-skinned aliens standing above them.
"Which triplet is that?" one of them asked, pointing at Axan. "The one with the white hair."
"Asa? I think that’s him."
"It’s Axan!" Maeve shouted at them before he could finish. "His name is Axan, you idiots!"
The aliens frowned as they looked at Maeve, their faces full of confusion.
"Who’s that tiny thing? Is she their mate? Ew, she looks so ugly. Why is she looks so pale like that?"
Maeve almost choked on her saliva the moment she heard the racist comment from the aliens.
She could have accepted it if they had only called her tiny, but ugly? Ugly?!
Sure, Maeve wasn’t the most beautiful woman back on Earth, but no one had ever called her ugly before. She had received plenty of compliments over the years.
She was many things, but ugly was definitely not one of them.
Maeve puffed out her cheeks, clearly offended. "Excuse me?!" she shouted back. "I’m considered pretty where I come from!"
The red-skinned aliens blinked before bursting into laughter. "Did you hear that?"
"The tiny pale thing thinks she’s pretty!"
"I guess beauty standards really are different everywhere."
Maeve gritted her teeth. She wanted to argue, but before she could think of another comeback, Axan stepped forward and quietly placed himself in front of her.
His broad back blocked the aliens from her view.
"I don’t care what you think," Axan said coldly. "But watch your mouths."
The laughter stopped almost instantly. One of the aliens narrowed his eyes before letting out a mocking snort. "So it really is Axan."
Another alien spun the spear in his hand with a grin. "Good. That saves us the trouble of looking for you."
The moment Axan heard those words, he understood their plan.
They were here to break through the barrier and the reason they had been looking for him was simple: they wanted to cripple the settlement by killing the one who served as its main line of defense.
"If you think killing me will make this easy..." His voice turned cold. "...then you’re going to be disappointed."
The red-skinned aliens exchanged amused looks before one of them laughed. "We’ll see about that."
When the Pyrax began attacking the barrier Axan had created to protect the settlement, Maeve immediately told everyone to move away from the area.
They couldn’t hide inside the underground cave, and escaping into the forest wasn’t an option either.
That left them with only one safe option: to disperse across the settlement instead of gathering in one place and making themselves easy targets for the enemy.
"I know this is scary, but I think it’s the best option we have right now," Maeve said. "Besides, if we spread out, we’ll have a better chance of hiding in places that are harder for them to find."
"Goddess, you don’t have to worry so much about us," Zini said with a reassuring smile. "Most of us may not be the tribe’s main warriors, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to fight."
Maeve blinked several times in confusion. "What..."
Hadn’t Pinky just called them the vulnerable group?
[The meaning of "vulnerable" is a little different here than it is in your world, Host!] Pinky replied cheerfully.
To be honest, Maeve wasn’t sure that the difference was only slight.
"Everyone!" Nyx shouted. "Pick up your weapons! It’s our turn to protect the settlement as well!"
The next moment, everyone pulled out the stone axes hanging from their waists and raised them into the air.
Maeve’s eyes widened because she hadn’t even noticed they had been carrying those axes on their belts this whole time!
Maeve stared at them in disbelief and for a moment, she had completely forgotten that this was a world where almost everyone had to learn how to survive.
Back on Earth, the elderly, women, and teenagers would usually be told to stay behind during a battle.
But here, even those considered "vulnerable" still knew how to fight.
The only difference was that they weren’t as strong as the tribe’s main warriors.
"Please don’t worry about us, Goddess," one of the older women said with a gentle smile as she tightened her grip on her stone axe. "We’ve survived this long for a reason."
"We won’t let those Pyrax take our home!" another woman declared.
"And we won’t let them take you and our little boy away!"
"Protect our Goddess at all costs!"
The moment the Pyrax finally broke through the barrier, the women of the Azuryn Tribe rushed into action.
Without anyone telling them what to do, they quickly formed a protective circle around Maeve. Each of them gripped a stone axe tightly, striking at any Pyrax warrior who dared to come near.
"You stupid blue people!" one of the Pyrax shouted. "You’ve already taken the placenta, so isn’t that ugly creature useless to you now?"
Ugly again? Was that really the only insult they knew?!
Before she could say anything, one of the Azuryn women stepped forward and pointed her stone axe at the Pyrax.
"Our Goddess is worth more than all of you combined!" she shouted.
The other women immediately raised their weapons. "That’s right!"
"We’ll never hand her over!"
"If you want to touch her, you’ll have to kill us first!"
The Pyrax burst into laughter. "Listen to them," one of them sneered. "A bunch of weak females think they can stop us."
He lunged forward without warning, swinging his weapon at the women protecting Maeve.
"Watch out!" Maeve cried.
Clang!
The stone axe in Zini’s hands met his weapon head-on. Although the impact forced her back several steps, she gritted her teeth and refused to move aside.
The other women rushed in at once, attacking from different directions and forcing the Pyrax warrior to retreat.
For a brief moment, the enemy’s advance came to a halt. Maeve held Lior tightly against her chest, her heart pounding.
On the other side, a group of Pyrax attacked Axan all at once.
He fought them back with powerful punches and wide swings of his stone axe. Every strike forced another enemy to the ground, while his barrier continued to protect as much of the settlement as it could.
Even so, it was hard for him to stay focused because his thoughts kept drifting back to Maeve.
He knew she was surrounded by the women of the tribe, but that didn’t ease the worry in his heart.
Maeve quickly realized why Axan kept getting hurt because every few moments, he would glance back at her instead of keeping his full attention on the battle. Each time he did, a Pyrax warrior managed to land another hit on him.
She couldn’t bear to watch it any longer, so she shouted at the top of her lungs. "Axan! If you don’t focus, we’re all going to die! Stop looking back at me! I’ll be fine! I’m actually pretty lucky!"
The truth was, Maeve had no idea whether she would survive or not. But if she really did have extraordinary luck, then the only thing she could do was trust it.
[Host, would you like to buy a weapon from the Black Market?] Pinky asked. [If you don’t want a weapon, you can also buy something to protect yourself.]
"Show me something that can guarantee Lior and I stay alive!" Maeve shouted, as the battle was too loud with weapons clashing all around them.
Pinky immediately brought up an item from the Black Market.
[Lucky Feather Necklace: 5,800 Coins

Maeve’s eyes widened the moment she saw the item. If it was combined with her Lucky Charm skill, then the effect would definitely be even greater!
"I want to buy it!" she said without a second thought.
