Chapter 85: Protect the Last Hope

In the blink of an eye, the triplets were on full alert again.

Cerus immediately rushed off to gather the warriors, ordering them to grab whatever weapons they could find.

Everything happened so fast that there wasn’t even enough time to move the elderly, the children, and the other vulnerable members of the tribe into the underground cave.

After all, if they entered the cave after the Pyrax Tribe had already arrived, they would only end up revealing the tribe’s most carefully hidden shelter to their enemies.

"Maeve, listen to me." Ikarus turned to his wife, his expression more serious than she had ever seen before. His eyes then moved to the baby boy resting safely in her arms.

"Right now, I need you to stay close to at least one of us at all times." His voice was calm but firm. "For now, you’ll stay with Axan."

He gently rested a hand on her shoulder. "And no matter what happens... don’t leave his side. Do you understand?"

Maeve nodded immediately. "I understand. Are you going to fight them alongside Cerus again?"

"I have to," Ikarus answered firmly. "He can’t hold them off by himself. That’s why I need Axan to stay behind and protect everyone here, including you and our son."

Maeve looked into his eyes, unable to hide the fear on her face because this was the first time she had ever found herself in the middle of something that felt like a real war.

The wild beasts had always been frightening and she never liked it whenever they attacked the settlement.

But people were different.

Wild beasts attacked because they were hungry. Once they had eaten, they would leave. Meanwhile, people like those from the Pyrax Tribe were nothing like that.

They weren’t fighting to survive, but they were attacking because they hated, wanted revenge, or simply wanted to take what belonged to someone else.

That thought frightened Maeve far more than any wild beast ever had.

"We haven’t even given our baby a name yet," Maeve said, her voice trembling. Fear filled her heart as one terrible thought after another raced through her mind.

What if Ikarus didn’t survive this battle? He might never even know his own son’s name.

Even worse, what if she didn’t survive either? Their son would be left alone in this world without his parents.

And what if the Pyrax Tribe took their son after failing to steal his placenta?

"Lior," Ikarus suddenly said. "How about that name?"

Maeve blinked. "Lior?"

"It means light," Ikarus said softly. "Our son brought hope back to the Azuryn Tribe. I think... he deserves a name like that."

Maeve looked down at the baby sleeping peacefully in her arms. "Lior..." she whispered, testing the name. A small smile slowly appeared on her face. "It suits him."

"Then it’s settled." Ikarus smiled gently. He patted Maeve’s head before moving his hand to their son’s tiny head. "I’ll do my best to drive them away as quickly as possible, so the two of you can sleep peacefully tonight."

"I’ve already slept enough today," Maeve replied with a weak smile. "So... just make sure you come back alive." Her voice softened. "Please... stay safe."

Ikarus didn’t answer with words. He simply gave her one last gentle smile before turning to Axan.

The two brothers didn’t exchange a single word, but they didn’t need to because they both understood that protecting Maeve and their son came before everything else.

"Leader Ikarus!" A warrior’s urgent voice suddenly rang through the settlement. "They’re getting closer! Our scouts say their leader is with them!"

Ikarus clicked his tongue when he heard that.

"Alright," he said, looking back at Maeve one last time. "I have to go."

Before Maeve could say another word, he had already turned and headed toward the entrance of the settlement.

Maeve stayed behind with Axan and the others at the far end of the settlement, near the rocky cliff.

They couldn’t hide in the forest outside because they already knew the Pyrax Tribe had most likely spread out and surrounded the entire area.

"Can they break through your barrier?" Maeve asked quietly.

"With my current strength..." Axan admitted, his voice filled with frustration, "yes, they can."

He looked toward the invisible barrier protecting the settlement. "They’ll have to keep attacking it again and again. But if they manage to break through..." He paused. "The barrier will be weakened, and we’ll become easy targets for the wild beasts after this."

That was why Ikarus and Cerus had chosen to intercept the Pyrax Tribe before they could even reach the barrier surrounding the Azuryn Settlement.

After all, the Pyrax Tribe would never stop attacking the barrier until they broke through it. They were nothing like the wild beasts, which would quickly give up once they realized the prey inside the fence wasn’t worth the effort.

"It’s been so long since another tribe attacked us," one of the tribe members whispered.

"Oh, Sky Mother..." another muttered, his voice shaking. "I can still remember the nightmare of the war I witnessed as a child. I really thought... we’d never have to go through something like that again."

"It can’t be helped," Axan said at last.

"The reason no one attacked us for the past ten years was because they knew our tribe was slowly dying, so there was nothing left here worth taking."

He looked toward the entrance of the settlement, where the warriors had already gathered.

"But now our tribe has a chance to thrive again." His expression grew even more serious. "And because of that, we have to be ready to face many more threats in the future."

Maeve quietly tightened her grip on Lior. She swallowed hard as Axan’s words settled deep in her heart.

But then, Pinky suddenly gave her a mission announcement.
