Chapter 83: The Price of Hope

With the help of the women around her, Maeve was finally able to enjoy her meal. After she finished nursing her son, they even gave her a gentle massage to help her relax.

Honestly, after everything she had gone through during childbirth, it felt like heaven.

But the peaceful moment didn’t last long the moment she heard someone shout from outside the hut.

"The Leaders have returned!"

"Our Leaders are still alive!"

Maeve immediately jumped to her feet and the sudden movement startled her son, who had just fallen asleep beside her. He opened his eyes again and began to cry.

"It’s alright," Nyx said gently as she saw Maeve reaching for him. "We’ll take care of him."

She smiled warmly. "You should go and welcome our Leaders."

Maeve, who had been torn between running to her mates and staying with her baby, finally felt relieved.

She gently patted Nyx’s shoulder and whispered, "Thank you... thank you."

Without wasting another second, she hurried out of the hut.

Outside, nearly everyone in the Azuryn Tribe had gathered near the entrance to the settlement. Their eyes were fixed on the group returning from the Heart of the Lumivale Forest.

Maeve quickly followed their gaze and from a distance, she saw Ikarus and Cerus walking back alongside the other warriors. Their bodies were stained with golden blood.

The color of the blood didn’t frighten her, but knowing that the blood meant they had been hurt made her heart tighten.

Maeve couldn’t hold herself back any longer. She gathered the edge of her dress and hurried toward them as fast as she could. Thankfully, after receiving the Sky Mother’s blessing and the effects of the special potion, her body no longer felt as sore as it had before.

"Ikarus! Cerus!"

The two men immediately looked up at the sound of her voice and the moment they saw her, the exhaustion on their faces seemed to disappear.

A wide smile spread across Cerus’s face. "Maeve!"

Without thinking, he ran over and carefully wrapped her in his arms. Even though he was overflowing with excitement, he was still gentle enough not to press against her recovering body.

"You’re alright," he murmured, letting out a shaky breath. "Thank the Sky Mother... you’re alright."

Maeve smiled through the tears gathering in her eyes. "I should be the one saying that," she whispered back. "You scared me."

Cerus scratched the back of his head with an awkward laugh. "We’re fine. Those bastards from the Pyrax Tribe just refused to give up." He clicked his tongue in annoyance. "They’d been hiding around the Heart of the Lumivale Forest for weeks! Crazy bastards!"

Maeve slowly turned her eyes to Ikarus and the moment she saw him clearly, her smile faded.

Large wounds covered his chest and stomach. The cloth wrapped around them had already been soaked through with golden blood.

"Ikarus..." She immediately walked over to him, but just as she was about to hug him, she stopped herself because she was afraid that even a gentle hug would make his wounds hurt even more.

Ikarus noticed the hesitation in her eyes and smiled gently. "I’m alright," he said softly. "They just look worse than they actually are."

Maeve shook her head. "You’re lying." Her voice trembled as she carefully reached for his hand instead. "You’re covered in blood."

Ikarus lowered his gaze to the bandages around his chest and let out a soft laugh. "I’ve had worse."

Maeve frowned. "That doesn’t make this any better."

Before he could answer, Cerus sighed dramatically. "See? I told you she’d worry." He folded his arms and looked at Ikarus with a teasing smile. "You should’ve let me take more of the hits."

"That’s not a better solution at all!" Maeve protested. She puffed out her cheeks, clearly upset that they were acting as if getting hurt was no big deal.

[It really isn’t a big deal to them, Host! As long as their heads are still attached and their hearts are still beating, they’ll be fine!]

But her heart wouldn’t be fine!

After all, she had become a part of their family. Seeing them covered in wounds made her both sad and angry because there was nothing she could do to protect them.

Or maybe... there was?

’Can I buy the Healing Staplers again?’ Maeve asked Pinky.

Pinky floated happily in front of her. [Of course, Host! But each Healing Stapler can only heal one wound, so—]

’I want to buy twenty Healing Staplers.’

Pinky blinked several times in surprise. [Are you sure, Host? That’s a lot!]

Maeve didn’t sound hesitate when she said, ’Yes, I’m sure. Sorry, but I’m not poor Maeve anymore. I have fifty thousand coins now!’

Just as people often said, when someone who had spent their whole life hungry was suddenly given more food than they could ever imagine, they wouldn’t be afraid to eat as much as they wanted.

Maeve had spent most of her life worrying about money, so now that she finally had more than enough, she wasn’t going to hold back when it came to protecting the people she loved.

[Purchased 20× Healing Staplers: 4,000 Coins]

[Remaining Coins: 48,550]

As soon as she finished buying the Healing Staplers, Maeve saw Axan hurrying toward them. It looked like he had just finished dealing with the damaged part of the barrier.

His eyes quickly swept over the wounds covering Ikarus and Cerus before he asked, "You did it?"

Ikarus gave him a tired nod. "Yes. We did."

Axan let out a sigh of relief. After all, if Ikarus had failed to bury the placenta, he probably wouldn’t have been able to keep the barrier standing much longer.

Maeve honestly wanted to know what had happened at the Heart of the Lumivale Forest, but looking at their exhausted faces and blood-soaked clothes, she knew this wasn’t the right time.

"Come on," she said gently as she took Ikarus’s hand with one hand and Cerus’s with the other. "Let’s get you cleaned up and treat your wounds first."

She then turned to Elder Vax and the other healers, who had just arrived. "Elder Vax, please take care of the others."

The old healer nodded without hesitation. "Leave them to us, Goddess."

With that, Maeve led Ikarus and Cerus back to their cave.
