Chapter 82: The First Days of Motherhood
Maeve felt relieved that the people outside the Azuryn Tribe would no longer hunt her or her baby because the only reason they had wanted to kidnap them was to steal the baby’s placenta.
But as one worry disappeared, another quickly took its place. Now she couldn’t stop thinking about Ikarus and Cerus.
Axan had told her earlier that reaching the Heart of the Lumivale Forest was always a race. This time, it would probably be even more dangerous than it had been ten years ago.
If other tribes were after the placenta, there was a real chance that Ikarus and Cerus could get hurt.
But for now, there was nothing Maeve could do except wait patiently for them to return and feed the hungry little boy resting in her arms.
"Miss Maeve, we made lots of baby clothes while you were underground," Zini said with a bright smile.
She was sitting inside the hut with two elder women, Nyx and Sal.
The three of them had stayed by Maeve’s side since Axan left to attend to something important regarding the barrier. They had patiently taught her how to breastfeed without causing herself too much pain.
They were also the ones who cleaned Maeve’s body after she gave birth while she was unconscious.
"Oh, my... these are so cute!" Maeve’s eyes immediately lit up as Zini carefully placed a pile of tiny baby clothes in front of her.
Each outfit had been made from the soft fur and leather of wild beasts. Therefore, they were heavier than the baby clothes she remembered from Earth, but the stitching was beautiful. Every piece had been carefully sewn by hand, and not a single thread was out of place.
’If this were the modern world,’ Maeve thought, ’Zini and the other women could definitely sell these baby clothes in a clothing store with skills like this!’
’Ah... I’m thinking about capitalism again!’
"I and the others roasted a lot of meat for you!" she said happily. "While you were underground, the Clouds gave birth to many little Clouds, so we were finally able to spare some of the older ones for food."
She carefully placed several clay plates on the floor, and the rich smell of roasted meat instantly filled the hut.
There were also bowls of warm soup and roasted roots, perfect for settling Maeve’s stomach.
"The blue roots are also good for increasing your breast milk," Sal said with a smile. "I used to eat them after I gave birth to Zini. Those really were the good old days."
Sal and Nyx both fell silent as memories of the past surfaced. Back then, the Azuryn Tribe had been filled with the laughter of children.
Now, whenever they looked at Maeve’s newborn son, relief filled their hearts, but so did a quiet sadness.
Perhaps that was the way memories worked. No matter how happy they were, they always carried a touch of sorrow, especially when the Azuryn Tribe had changed so much from the thriving place it once was.
"It’s such a shame that these roots are so hard to find now," Oraya said with a sigh.
"Why do you look so sad?!" Zini protested. "If Leader Ikarus and Leader Cerus manage to bury the placenta in the Heart of the Lumivale Forest, we’ll have plenty of trees again!"
Oraya smiled weakly but still sighed. "But that will take time. Our little boy will need a lot of breast milk before then, and we don’t want him to go hungry."
Maeve honestly understood Oraya’s concern. Even now, her son showed no sign of stopping. He kept nursing as though he could never get enough.
Compared to the women of the Azuryn Tribe, Maeve’s body was much smaller. It was only natural for them to worry that she would become exhausted if she had to feed him all the time.
"You don’t have to worry too much about that," Maeve said gently. "The Sky Mother has blessed me, and little by little, my body will adapt to this world."
In other words, her body would naturally begin producing enough milk for her son.
"But..." She scratched her cheek with an embarrassed smile. "I’ll probably end up eating a lot more than I used to."
The women exchanged glances before breaking into warm laughter.
"So that’s all?" Zini grinned. "We were worried about something much worse!"
"We can always find more food," Sal said reassuringly. "As long as you and the little one stay healthy, we’ll gladly hunt and gather as much as you need."
Nyx nodded with a gentle smile. "The leaders would probably bring you extra food even if we didn’t. Besides, the Clouds will be entering their mating season again soon, so we’ll have plenty of food."
Maeve bit her lower lip as a soft smile spread across her face. It had been so long since she had been cared for with such genuine kindness.
"Thank you..." she whispered.
Nyx gently took Maeve’s hand and looked into her eyes. "No," she said softly. "We’re the ones who should be thanking you. Thank you, Miss Maeve. Your arrival in this world has meant more to us than you could ever imagine."
Maeve didn’t say anything because their words had touched her so deeply that she couldn’t find the right response.
In the end, she simply smiled and gently squeezed Nyx’s hand.
"Goddess," Oraya said after a moment, breaking the comfortable silence. "Why don’t you eat while the food is still warm?"
Maeve looked at the meal in front of her before glancing down at her son. "I’d love to, but..." she said with an awkward smile. "Maybe I’ll eat after he’s finished nursing. It would be difficult to hold my food while carrying him."
Even supporting her son with one arm was already making her arm ache. There was no way she could eat properly with her other hand.
"Ah, no, no, no!" Zini quickly protested. "You mustn’t eat cold food!"
Without waiting for an answer, she picked up one of the clay plates filled with roasted meat and hurried over to Maeve.
Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she grinned. "Then let me feed you!"
