Chapter 81: Holding My Son for the First Time

As soon as Maeve said those words, cheers erupted from outside her hut. Only then did she realize just how many people had gathered outside.

For a moment, she felt like a patient being visited by an entire neighborhood.

"Maeve..."

She looked toward the doorway and saw Axan standing there, holding his baby nephew in his arms.

Their little boy was quietly sucking on a leaf, probably something safe to use as a temporary substitute until Maeve was able to breastfeed him herself.

"Axan." A gentle smile spread across Maeve’s face. "It’s really nice to finally see your face again."

Without saying a word, Axan walked into the hut and wrapped one arm around Maeve, carefully pulling her into a hug. She immediately slipped her arms around his neck, letting him support her back.

"Two months felt so long," Axan whispered against her hair. "I really thought... we might never see each other again."

Maeve let out a soft laugh. "But we talked through the little gap almost every day."

Axan gently shook his head. "That’s different."

His arms tightened around her just a little more. Even though the hug made it slightly harder for Maeve to breathe, she didn’t ask him to loosen his grip.

Instead, she hugged him back.

"Seeing your face..." Axan murmured. "...is better than anything."

Maeve’s heart softened when she heard that. She was about to say something when she suddenly felt a tiny tug on the ends of her hair.

She lowered her head and found the little boy was staring at her with his bright golden eyes.

"Aaa... aaa..." He reached toward her with his tiny hand while making soft little sounds, as though he already knew exactly who she was.

Maeve’s breath caught in her throat because it was only at that moment that she truly realized that she had become a mother.

"Can I... hold him?" she asked in a gentle voice.

Axan smiled without hesitation. "Of course."

He carefully lifted their son and placed him into Maeve’s waiting arms, moving as gently as if he were handling the world’s greatest treasure.

Maeve looked down at the tiny life resting against her chest. "Oh, my..." she whispered with a small laugh. "You’re so big."

She adjusted him carefully, still amazed by his size. If this had happened back on Earth, she probably would have needed a C-section.

The fact that she had been able to give birth to him naturally, without any modern medical equipment, still felt unbelievable.

[But you had Pinky’s help, Host!] Pinky said proudly. [That’s a hundred times better than modern medicine!]

Maeve ignored the little pink ball because she was far too focused on the baby in her arms.

Now that she was no longer on the verge of passing out, she could finally take a good look at him.

The more she looked, the more she realized that her son looked almost exactly like Ikarus.

She couldn’t help narrowing her eyes. "I carried you for three months," she muttered. "I went through all that pain..." She gently poked her son’s tiny cheek. "And you still ended up looking almost exactly like your father."

[It’s not your fault, Host!] Pinky quickly defended her. [The Azuryn Tribe’s bloodline is naturally much stronger than a human’s. In fact, they have one of the strongest bloodlines in the entire world!]

"But he has your cute little ears," Axan said with a gentle smile. "That’s something we don’t have here, so you’ve given him a special feature."

His words should have comforted Maeve, but they made her worry even more instead.

Back on Earth, people who looked different were often treated unfairly. Some were stared at, laughed at, or even bullied just because they didn’t look like everyone else.

She lowered her eyes to their son. "Do you think..." she asked softly, "that will become a problem in the future?"

Her fingers gently brushed the baby’s tiny ear. "He’ll probably look more different than all the other children."

As the tribe continued to grow, more and more babies would be born. Before long, children would be running all over the settlement.

Ikarus had once told her that things would become much easier once all three of them had children. Even so, having one healthy baby already felt like a miracle, and soon the other members of the tribe were also gradually blessed with children.

Axan looked at her for a long moment before answering. "It doesn’t matter." His voice was calm but certain. "He may look different from the other children, but if he had never been born, many of those children would never have been born either."

He gently looked at their son before continuing, "If anything, they should be grateful that you brought him into this world."

"Besides, I don’t think Ikarus will spare anyone who looks down on his son," he said with complete confidence. "And if my son looks like him too, I won’t just stand by and do nothing either."

"Oh... speaking of Ikarus, where is he?" Maeve asked. "Why isn’t he here?"

For a brief moment, an uneasy thought crossed her mind. ’Did spending two whole months with me alone wear him out? Has he gotten tired of seeing me?’

[Host, you’re overthinking it!] Pinky said with a helpless sigh.

Maeve silently admitted that Pinky was probably right.

She looked back at Axan. "Where is he? Why isn’t Ikarus here? And where is Cerus?"

She also noticed that Cerus was missing, which felt strange. Out of everyone, she was sure Cerus would have been the most excited to see her wake up.

"Ikarus and Cerus had to leave for the Heart of the Lumivale Forest," Axan explained. "They needed to bury the baby’s placenta before anyone could try to take it from us."

Oh, Maeve had almost forgotten about that ritual.

After everything that had happened, it had slipped her mind.

A few seconds later, another thought crossed her mind.

She tightened her hold on her son without realizing it. "So... does that mean..." she asked softly, "my baby and I won’t be hunted by those evil people anymore?"

"We don’t have to worry about being kidnapped again... right?"

As soon as Axan nodded, Maeve finally let out the breath she had been holding in for the past two months.

"You’ll be safe now, Maeve," Axan said gently. "You won’t have to be afraid of that anymore... at least for a while."
