Chapter 78: Life Underground Isn’t So Bad (2)

"Ikarus, you’re thinking too much," Maeve said with a sigh. "It’s really not that important."

"It actually is." Ikarus lowered his head, staring at the ground beneath his feet. "Cerus told me it would be better if I didn’t bore you to death."

Maeve let out a soft hiss. "I’m not going to die from boredom. Really, it’s not a big deal." She smiled a little. "I was already used to living alone before, so this isn’t my first time living in isolation."

She had never lived underground before, but after leaving her uncle’s house, she had spent years living by herself. She still went to work every day, still walked through the busy streets, and still exchanged greetings with the people around her.

But when you don’t have a single close friend or anyone waiting for you at home, that kind of life can feel just as lonely as being trapped underground.

"Honestly..." Maeve looked up and met Ikarus’s eyes. "This place isn’t that bad."

A gentle smile appeared on her face. "At least you’re here with me, and that’s already more than enough."

If she had been trapped underground completely alone, she probably would have lost her mind before a single day had passed.

"So don’t worry about boring me," Maeve said with a soft laugh. "Besides, there are still lots of things we can do while we’re down here. We can play tic-tac-toe, drink some water, solve puzzles..." She paused dramatically before looking at the dark tunnel ahead. "Or we can sit together and admire the endless darkness in front of us."

But little did Maeve know—or perhaps she had expected it all along—that most of the things they ended up doing while living underground involved having sex.

They did it so often that Maeve used up all three of her Energy Potions and even bought five more. Fortunately, after Ikarus finally realized that Maeve’s body couldn’t handle his stamina too often, they kept things much shorter whenever she didn’t drink an Energy Potion.

Of course, they didn’t spend all their time having sex. Sometimes they would lie together and talk about their past. But somehow, it was hard to keep a conversation going whenever their bodies started burning with desire. Maybe that was simply the curse of newlyweds.

Before they knew it, the two months had come to an end and to Maeve’s surprise, the person who was going to help deliver her baby was Ikarus himself.

"Why don’t we call the tribe’s doctor?!" Maeve cried out as another contraction hit. She lay on the makeshift bed, her hands tightly gripping the thick fur blanket beneath her.

Ikarus shook his head. "I can’t open the entrance yet because the baby will release a huge amount of Aether Energy the moment they’re born," he explained patiently. "That’s why you have to give birth here. But don’t worry, every husband in the tribe is trained to help his wife during childbirth, and I’ve gone through that training too."

He took a slow breath, but his face was frighteningly pale, maybe even paler than Maeve’s. His hands trembled slightly as he forced a small smile. "I really hope I can do this."

"Ikarus!" Maeve called firmly.

She looked straight into his eyes. Just a moment ago, she had doubted whether he could really deliver their baby, but seeing how scared he looked now, she pushed those thoughts aside.

"You can do this!" she said.

It wasn’t that she had suddenly become completely confident about the situation. If anything, she was still terrified. But if Ikarus didn’t believe in himself, things could end very badly. Right now, he needed her trust more than anything else.

[Don’t forget to drink your special potion, Host!] Pinky reminded her.

The moment Pinky finished speaking, a pink potion appeared out of thin air and floated into Maeve’s hand. Without wasting any more time, she pulled out the cork, and then drank the entire bottle in one gulp.

Ikarus stared at the empty bottle in surprise. "What’s that?" he asked quickly. "Is that another potion the Sky Mother gave you? Maeve, will it make your delivery easier?" His voice grew more frantic with every question. "You won’t die because of this, right? Maeve!"

"Ikarus!" Maeve snapped, even through the pain. "I’m the only one who’s allowed to panic!"

He immediately fell silent.

"And yes, it’s a potion from the Sky Mother," she continued, trying to steady her breathing. "And no, I don’t think I’ll die that easily." She gave him a weak smile. "You gave me your golden blood, remember?"

Ikarus froze for a moment before letting out a shaky laugh. "Right."

He lowered his head and rubbed his face with both hands, trying to calm himself. "I’m sorry," he said in a low voice. "I just... I can’t stop thinking about all the things that could go wrong."

Maeve softened her gaze. "It’s alright, I—AH!"

She wasn’t able to continue her words because another contraction suddenly hit her.

Her fingers tightened around the fur blanket so hard that her knuckles turned white. She bit down on her lip, trying not to scream, but the pain was much stronger than before.

Ikarus immediately knelt beside the bed. "It’s getting closer," he muttered, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to stay calm.

He took a deep breath and forced himself to remember every lesson he had learned. "Maeve, listen to me." His tone became much steadier. "Breathe in slowly... and let it out."

Maeve nodded and followed his instructions. "In..." She drew in a deep breath. "Out..."

She slowly released it, though another wave of pain made her body tremble.

"Good," Ikarus said softly. "You’re doing well."

Maeve had never imagined the pain could still be this unbearable, even with her 20% Pain Resistance. Every contraction felt like it was tearing her body apart from the inside.

If she hadn’t had that resistance, she was sure the pain alone would have killed her. But more importantly, why hasn’t the potion started working yet?!

[It needs a little more time, Host! Please be patient.] Pinky said, trying to comfort her.

Patient?

Maeve felt like she was about to crush that little pink ball if she had to wait any longer.
