Chapter 77: Life Underground Isn’t So Bad (1)
While Ikarus gathered the animal hides and blankets to prepare their sleeping area, Maeve decided to walk around their living space.
"This place actually isn’t that bad," she said. "If I weren’t being hunted, I think I’d be comfortable living here."
She really meant it because the underground fortress felt safe and surprisingly spacious.
But it was impossible to truly enjoy it while knowing there were dangerous people outside who would gladly kidnap her if they ever found her.
After looking around for a while, another thought crossed her mind. "But if the settlement were destroyed, couldn’t everyone just move into the underground fortress?"
Ikarus finally looked up at her. "If the barrier protecting the tribe were ever destroyed," he explained, "then staying here wouldn’t be safe either. The beasts could burn down the entire settlement or even collapse the ground above us."
Maeve let out a soft sigh. "No... you’re right." She gave a small, embarrassed smile. "I wasn’t really thinking when I said that."
Ikarus noticed that she seemed lost in thought. "Why don’t you sit down for a while?" he said gently. "You must be tired."
He quickly walked over, folded several thick fur blankets, and laid them on the floor to make a soft seat.
"Here," he said with a warm smile. "You can rest while I finish getting our sleeping area ready."
Maeve smiled gratefully before sitting down on the pile of soft fur blankets. "I guess I am a little tired," she admitted.
She rested one hand on her stomach and let out a quiet sigh. The day had been so busy that she hadn’t even realized how exhausted she was until now.
Ikarus continued arranging the sleeping area, spreading several thick animal hides over the large stone bed before covering them with clean blankets.
"We’ll have to make do with this for now," he said. "Once we settle in, I’ll make it more comfortable."
Maeve looked over at him. "I think it’s already comfortable enough."
Not long after, Maeve finally turned her attention back to Pinky. ’Alright,’ she said in her mind. ’Show me what you wanted to show me earlier.’
[Right away, Host!] Pinky replied excitedly.
A hologram screen immediately appeared before Maeve’s eyes.
[Host, I found something that’s actually really good for a Black Market item!]
[Automatic Cleaning Toilet: 2,000 Coins
- Effect: Cleans itself after every use and stores water safely.
- Side Effect: Makes a loud roaring sound every time you flush it.]
Maeve stared at the description. ’A roaring sound?’ she thought in confusion. ’How could a toilet possibly make a roaring sound?’
The side effect was certainly strange. But still, the toilet cleaned itself after every use and even stored water safely. Compared to the other options, that was already an incredible deal.
’Alright,’ Maeve thought. ’I’ll buy this one.’
[Purchased 1× Automatic Cleaning Toilet: 2,000 Coins]
[Remaining Coins: 4,350]
A satisfied smile spread across Pinky’s face. [Excellent choice, Host!]
The toilet worked exactly as promised. What Maeve wasn’t expecting, however, was that the roaring sound it made sounded almost exactly like the roar of a wild beast.
Fortunately, Axan had already surrounded their living area with the invisible barrier. Otherwise, the loud roar would have echoed across the entire settlement.
"Wife, are you sure this thing is safe?!" Ikarus shouted, raising his voice as the noise made his ears ache.
"It’s safe!" Maeve shouted back. "Our ears will probably get used to it after a few uses!"
It wouldn’t be easy, but Maeve didn’t have much of a choice. The other toilets seemed to come with even worse side effects. One of them was even said to suck out the user’s soul. What kind of toilet even did that?
Once that was done, she also decided to buy an air purifier.
[Air Purifier: 1,300 Coins]
- Effect: Continuously removes dust, smoke, bad smells, harmful germs, and poisonous particles from the air within a 20-meter area.
- Side Effect: Everyone inside its range will sneeze exactly once every morning after waking up.]
[Remaining Coins: 3,050]
Maeve had been sneezing every morning back in her old world, so she was confident she could handle this side effect. Besides, the benefits of the air purifier were far greater than its downside.
The only problem was that her coins were almost gone. If she ended up trapped underground, would she still have a way to earn more coins?
[Oh, don’t worry, Host!] Pinky said cheerfully. [You’ll earn plenty of coins after you give birth. For now, your only job is to take good care of you and the baby growing inside you!]
Maeve frowned. ’Wait... does that mean you won’t be giving me any more missions until this baby is born?’
Pinky bounced up and down. [Your pregnancy is getting bigger, so I don’t want to put you under too much stress, Host!]
Maeve couldn’t help but smile. To be honest, even though she wanted more coins, she was also happy that she wouldn’t have to complete any missions for the next two months.
It almost felt like a vacation.
"That’s not bad at all," she murmured to herself.
"Yes?" Ikarus asked when he heard her speak.
Maeve blinked a few times before quickly waving her hand. "Ah, nothing. I was just talking to myself!"
At first, she didn’t think he would find it strange. After all, the triplets had caught her talking to herself many times before.
But to her surprise, Ikarus lowered his gaze and quietly asked, "Is talking to me really that bad?" He let out a small sigh before adding, "I must be boring you."
"What?" Maeve stared at him in shock because it was so unlike Ikarus to sound this unsure of himself.
"What are you talking about?" she asked, looking at him with gentle eyes. "We’ve only been here for less than a day. How could you possibly think you’ve already made me bored?"
Ikarus avoided her eyes for a moment before speaking.
"It’s just..." he said in a low voice. "We’ll only be seeing each other for two months, and I’m afraid you’ll get stressed because I bore you too much."
