Chapter 76: Until We Meet Again

There was only one entrance leading from the surface into the underground fortress. It was a massive stone door hidden at the very back of the settlement, near the rocky cliff.

Once the door was closed, it blended in perfectly with the surrounding rocks. Unless someone already knew it was there, they would never realize it was actually an entrance.

Axan and Cerus used a special kind of magic to seal it. Maeve didn’t fully understand what they were doing, but she watched them carefully draw strange symbols across the stone door with their own blood.

"The opening we’ll use to pass things inside is very small," Axan explained. "That’s why, we’ll only be able to send you food and small items through it."

He turned to Maeve, his expression unusually serious. "Are you sure you haven’t forgotten anything?"

Maeve shook her head. "I think I’ve brought everything I need."

Besides, if she really had forgotten something, she could probably buy it from the Black Market.

Still, she didn’t think she had left anything behind. After all, Axan had been incredibly careful while packing her things earlier, checking every item several times to make sure she would have everything she needed.

"Oh, but I think I forgot something!" Maeve said, her eyes suddenly widening.

Cerus was the first to react. "What did you forget?" he asked at once. "I can bring it to you right away!"

Maeve looked at him for a moment before the corners of her lips slowly lifted. "I forgot to say goodbye properly."

Before Cerus could ask what she meant, Maeve stepped closer. She gestured for him and Axan to bend down so they were at her height.

The two brothers exchanged a confused glance, but they did as she asked. Maeve smiled gently before giving each of them a soft kiss on the lips.

"It’s a goodbye kiss," she said with a warm smile. "In my world, couples usually share one before they’re separated."

For a moment, the world seemed to fall completely silent. Axan and Cerus froze where they stood.

Cerus’s eyes were so wide they looked ready to pop out of his head, while a deep blush spread across his face and all the way to his ears.

"I..." he mumbled, but no other words came out.

Even Axan, who was usually the calmest of the three brothers, stood completely still. His expression barely changed, yet the faint red tint on his cheeks gave him away.

"I’ll give you more kisses after I come out of here." The smile on Maeve’s face slowly faded into a sad one. "See you later... and I hope nothing bad happens to either of you."

Maeve had only known the three brothers for a short time. Yet somehow, saying goodbye already felt far more difficult than she had expected.

Cerus had been right, two months was a long time.

Unable to hold herself back any longer, Maeve stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Axan and Cerus, pulling them into one last goodbye hug.

The two brothers immediately hugged her back.

"We’ll be waiting for you," Axan said softly. His hand gently stroked the back of Maeve’s head, hoping to ease her worries.

Beside him, Cerus gently rubbed her back. "Don’t worry," he said with a reassuring smile. "Even if we can’t see each other, we can still talk through the small opening every day."

Just a little while ago, Cerus had been the one pouting because they were about to be separated. Now, he quietly pushed his own sadness aside and focused on comforting Maeve instead.

"Maeve," Ikarus called gently. "We have to go now. The longer we stay outside, the easier it will be for others to track your Aether Energy."

Hearing those words, Cerus and Axan slowly let go of her, even though neither of them wanted to.

Maeve took a few slow steps backward toward Ikarus, never taking her eyes off them. "Take care of yourselves," she said softly.

Ikarus reached out and took her hand. Then he looked at his two brothers with a sad smile. "I’ll leave the tribe in your hands."

Axan gave a firm nod. "You don’t have to worry. We’ll protect everyone."

Cerus forced a smile, though his eyes were already turning red. "And we’ll be waiting for both of you to come home."

Ikarus looked at them for a long moment before nodding. "I know you will."

With that, he gently squeezed Maeve’s hand and led her toward the hidden entrance.

Maeve looked back one last time. Axan and Cerus were still standing exactly where they had been, watching her leave without moving.

She raised her hand and waved. "See you in two months!"

Cerus immediately waved both of his arms. "We’ll be counting every single day!"

Axan didn’t wave, but he gave her a small nod. "We’ll be here."

Those simple words somehow made Maeve feel much calmer.

Taking a deep breath, she turned around and followed Ikarus into the underground fortress.

The heavy stone door slowly began to close behind them and the gap of light grew smaller and smaller until only a thin line remained.

For one brief moment, Maeve caught one last glimpse of Axan and Cerus standing side by side, then the stone door shut completely.

Silence greeted them as they entered the underground fortress, but then Pinky suddenly shattered the quiet.

[Host, do you want to see what kinds of toilets are available in the Black Market?!]

Maeve let out a soft hiss and waved Pinky away as if she were shooing a fly. ’Later! I’ll look later! Let me catch my breath first!’

"The room is still a little messy because we didn’t have enough time to organize everything," Ikarus said as soon as they reached their living space. "But don’t worry. I’ll put everything in order tomorrow."

Maeve looked around and noticed that several things were still scattered across the floor. Thankfully, all of their food had been stored in a separate corner, so the dust couldn’t reach it at all.

"They’ll bring us more water every three days," Ikarus continued. "So we’ll have to use it carefully. But let’s hope it rains again soon. If it does, they’ll be able to send us more."
