Chapter 477: Chapter 477: Trade-off

"I saw him too. That man is gorgeous, better looking than a movie star. He always comes over around noon and stays for two hours. Who knows what they’re doing, locked up in that house!"

"Tsk. A man and a woman alone in a locked room? What else could they be doing? It’s not like they’re discussing work."

...

The destructive power of a group of gossiping women is comparable to an atomic bomb. Chipping in one after another, they aired all of Phoenix Golding’s dirty laundry.

Phoenix Golding thought no one in town knew her, so she carried on her affairs without a care. It wasn’t just with the fat man, but with Storm Xavier as well. She used to meet Storm Xavier at the school, but Goldie Thorne had been watching her too closely lately. So, Phoenix had Storm Xavier come to town instead. Juggling two men had made Phoenix’s life feel full and exciting, but her lucky streak was over.

Now, she had been stripped bare for all to see, with nowhere to hide. Phoenix Golding crouched on the ground, her body hunched over, not even daring to lift her head. Her mind was a complete blank; she had no idea how to handle the situation. She didn’t dare make a sound, her tears the only response.

The commotion was so great that a crowd began to gather, growing larger and larger until the alley was packed solid. Life in the town was usually dull. A sudden, scandalous drama like this—and a free one at that—was enough to bring nearly everyone out to watch the show.

Every single person looked at Phoenix Golding with utter contempt. Few people blamed the man; all the fire was directed at her. And it was the women who were the most vicious.

Tramp, filthy whore, slutty fox, homewrecker...

One woman even got physical, grabbing a handful of Phoenix Golding’s hair and hitting her. She was so filled with righteous indignation, you would’ve thought Phoenix Golding had stolen *her* man.

"I’ll beat you to death, you shameless bitch! I hate sluts who mess around more than anything!"

Judging by the woman’s tone and the viciousness of her attack, she was likely a wronged woman herself. Phoenix Golding didn’t dare fight back. She could only shield her face and let the woman beat her.

Like a gust of wind, a tall, large woman burst into the crowd. She saw the disheveled man, and her eyes widened in fury. Her gaze, filled with killing intent, landed on Phoenix Golding. She lunged forward, grabbed Phoenix Golding by the hair, and began to slap her viciously, cursing all the while.

"SPIT! You shameless fucking slut! I suspected you for a long time, you hussy! Coming to my husband every day, all dolled up, pretending to ’report on your work.’ You were deliberately trying to lead him astray! I’ll kill you!"

This tall woman was the fat man’s wife. She was even taller than him, with a square jaw and masculine features, and she was shockingly strong. Phoenix Golding was powerless in her grip. The woman yanked her to her feet, and the men in the crowd all stared, transfixed, enjoying the rare spectacle.

Phoenix Golding begged for mercy again and again, her voice mournful and her face stained with tears. It was a pitiable sight. But the sight only enraged the tall woman further, and her blows grew even harder. Soon, she resorted to kicking and punching, and Phoenix Golding’s cries of pain echoed one after another.

Although the fat man now held a grudge against Phoenix Golding, they had, after all, been intimate. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity, and the look in his eyes softened. His wife shot him a cold, meaningful glance. The man’s heart skipped a beat. He understood what she meant: he was to pin all the blame on Phoenix Golding.

Though he felt a twinge of reluctance to abandon Phoenix Golding, the man didn’t hesitate for long. He quickly made his choice. If his wife made a huge scene, his career would be completely ruined.

His career or his lover.

He, of course, chose his career.
