Chapter 476: Chapter 476: Two-Timing
"Pah! When we came in, you two were going at it hot and heavy. Besides, if you were just ’talking business,’ shouldn’t you be in an office? Coming to a place like this for that? Do you take us for fools?" Goldie Thorne cursed.
Adrian Hawthorne shouted from outside, "That man also said he’d guarantee this hussy gets transferred to the town office this year, and he’d guarantee she gets rated ’excellent’ again. No wonder this hussy can’t even teach one-two-three-four, yet she’s named ’excellent’ year after year!"
Of course, Phoenix Golding and the man couldn’t possibly have said such things. They were too busy getting it on; they wouldn’t have had the slightest inclination to discuss proper business. Adrian Hawthorne had said it on purpose. The more furious the crowd became, the deeper the trouble Phoenix Golding would be in.
"That’s not true... I was rated ’excellent’ based on my own merit. We’re innocent..." Phoenix Golding tried to explain. But she was naked and cowering, unable to even stand up straight. Naturally, she didn’t dare to raise her voice, which made her words sound like lies. Absolutely no one believed her.
"What a load of crap! Your clothes are off and you’re still ’innocent’? Do you think we’re idiots? I’ve been suspicious of you for a long time, you little vixen. Renting an apartment but never living in it, just showing up every few days, locking the door the second you arrive... all that sneaking around, you were obviously up to no good. So this is what it was! You’ve been coming here to carry on with men and sell yourself!"
A woman in her forties started cursing, her eyes filled with utter contempt. The other women were no different. Even though Phoenix Golding hadn’t stolen their husbands, women would always band together to deal with a ’homewrecker’. This was especially true back then, when having an illicit affair was considered a major sin.
"And you know what? This vixen has been hooking up with other men, too. I’ve seen it myself several times," another woman chimed in, sharing her own recent discovery.
These women all lived nearby, and the town was only so big. Phoenix Golding’s frequent visits had naturally aroused the suspicions of this gossipy bunch. However, they had been intimidated by the fat man and didn’t want to meddle. But now that someone else had blown the lid off the affair, they couldn’t hold back any longer, scrambling over one another to share what they had seen.
The hunched-over fat man’s expression flickered. He looked over at Phoenix Golding, his gaze turning cold and sinister.
’So this damn woman was two-timing him? Using the house *he* rented to sneak around with other men?’ It turned out that the man had rented this very apartment to facilitate his affair with Phoenix Golding. The office was thrilling, but ultimately, it was too risky. So, Phoenix Golding had come up with the idea of renting this place right across the street. It was just a short walk away, and they wouldn’t have to worry about being seen. The man, of course, had been delighted with the arrangement.
But now that Phoenix Golding had cheated on him, a disgusting feeling, like he’d swallowed a fly, churned in his stomach. Phoenix Golding had sworn up and down that she loved only him—that besides her husband, he was the only man in her life. She’d even claimed she hadn’t slept with her husband in ages. The man had been incredibly smug, believing Phoenix Golding was so captivated by his masculine charm that she was utterly devoted to him.
But now, the rude awakening had come all too quickly. Any trace of affection the man had for Phoenix Golding vanished in an instant. He even started to find her somewhat repulsive.
Especially looking at Phoenix Golding’s pathetic state now, the man had a revelation. ’This woman is nothing special. Her face is plain, her body is plain... How could I have ever thought she was some kind of goddess?’
’My judgment must have been clouded back then. She’s just good with sweet talk, and I fell for it.’
Phoenix Golding sensed the man’s indifference, and her heart sank. She shook her head frantically. "I didn’t... I swear there are no other men... Please, don’t accuse me wrongly..."
"Pah!" The woman who had spoken before spat in Phoenix Golding’s direction. "I saw it with my own two eyes! Still trying to deny it, you little hussy? That man was quite a looker. He’s probably just some pretty boy you’re keeping on the side."
