Chapter 45: 45: River Crisis

"Yes, I did all that," Sunnie stared at him. "But did they also tell you what they really did? That they tried raping my assistant and me in broad daylight, shamelessly!"

As she said this, the men tried protesting, but the Chief Elder shut them up.

Zukka was speechless as he stared at his sister and then at the men. "You raised..." He didn’t finish his sentence, but his cold eyes rested on them.

The Chief Elder sighed with a bow. "The goddess has been humiliated by these ignorant men and has given them her punishment.. we apologize for that..."

Sunnie turned to Zuna who had her face down. "If such men can’t stop their nasty attitudes towards the women, the gods will continue to be mad, and this land might face even greater crisis."

They said nothing.

Sunnie continued, "Speaking of crisis, let’s talk about fixing the source of this crisis." She stared at the river. "The river."

---

The next day, Sunnie and some group of people made their way down to the river.

Her beast husbands didn’t come along.

She was in the company of Zuna, Zukka, Little Black, the Chief Elder, some men, and some females she insisted they come.

Sunnie walked with Little Black while they got close to the river. "I didn’t even see you throughout yesterday. Did you abandon me after seeing some good food?" She glared at Little Black who spent his whole day in a cave, sleeping and enjoying the good food offered by the tribe as an associate of the moon goddess.

Little Black ran a hand through his stomach. "I couldn’t keep my eyes open after the wine and all...."

Sunnie glared at him. "You’re a kid. Who told you drinking alcohol was okay?"

He stared at Sunnie. "I told you I’m not a kid!"

"How old are you though?"

"Not telling."

"You’re probably like 8 years or something. A child."

"I’m not," he insisted as they got closer to the river.

"Besides! I heard some nasty men tried harassing you? Everyone’s talking about how you smashed their balls."

Sunnie stared at him. "You’re a kid. How do you know such stuff?"

He blinked. "I told you I’m not. I’m old enough." He added, "Show me those men now, and I’ll avenge you! I’ll beat them up so bad!"

Sunnie smiled. "Too late, my husband already handled the beating."

"Huh?" Little Black stared.

The river danced in their presence, moving under the current of the wind and glowing in the reflection of the sun.

They all stood there at its side, watching and waiting for what Sunnie would do.

"How the hell do you plan on purifying all this...?" Little Black inquired.

Sunnie sighed as she looked around for a while. Sunnie slowly approached the river with a clear transparent container she had obtained from her system and a little net.

She took some water and used the net to do some filtering.

After that, she waited for the dirt to settle. And then she showed it to the elder and to some of them around.

"This is what you all have been drinking and making use of. All this dirt."

They stared carefully. Zukka and Zuna were impressed by the magic she had used in doing this.

The Chief Elder shook his head. "I never thought it was this bad. The water didn’t seem this way and..." He sighed.

"It blends effortlessly with the water body, and that’s why its colour has been altered. It takes a lot of dirt for it to be like that. And that’s the condition of most water around here," she explained.

"So what are we supposed to do?" Zukka inquired, curious.

Sunnie looked around. Her eyes went up to the waterfall side—the space on top where water falls from. "I think the problem is from up there."

They all looked up at the top.

"Huh? How?" the Chief Elder asked.

Sunnie had already done a diagnosis with her system. "It flows down from there. So I think whatever needs to be done needs to start from there. We have to stop whatever is pouring from there to contaminate the water. And after that, we can be sure that more of it can’t be produced."

The Chief Elder didn’t really understand but nodded anyway. "Oh.. I see..."

Sunnie turned. "And I’ll need some workforce to get that done..." She looked around.

Sunnie picked some men and then proceeded to pick some women to help her out.

The men tried to protest. "Such work should be for us.. why are the females involved?" one questioned.

Some others agreed with what he had said.

Sunnie stared at him. "All the work I do here should involve help from the females. They bear sacred essence from the earth, so naturally they’re blessings that will aid everything going smoothly."

She added, "And again, I would rather work with females as my assistants. Any questions?"

No one said anything again. The females felt proud and happy at the statement as Sunnie gave the necessary instructions.

"But I want to come along!" Little Black insisted after Sunnie didn’t pick him among those who would be going up to the peak.

Sunnie stared at him. "No. Little one should stay back and monitor the water with Zukka and the elder."

Little Black shook his head. "No! I don’t want to! I want to come up there!"

Sunnie sighed as she stared at Zukka. "I leave him in your hands, please look after him. Okay?"

Zukka nodded with a smile. "Sure. I will."

While Sunnie and the others headed off, Little Black was left behind in the care of Zukka, who had fastened their hands together with a rope. He had done so so he wouldn’t run off.

Little Black watched them leave as he turned to glare at Zukka. "I hate you."

Zukka smiled at him. "Thanks."

"Leave me alone. Untie me! I don’t want to be stuck with you."

Zukka shook his head. "The goddess instructed me to look after the little one. I can’t disappoint her."

"....."

"I’m probably older than you, you blockhead!" Little Black snapped at him. "I’m not a little one."

But Zukka smiled as he bent down and patted him on the ears. "You’re actually cute when you’re angry."

"....!!"

Little Black lost it. "I’m not cute!!" His voice pierced through the forest and sent the birds flying off into the sky.
