Chapter 44: 44: Not for you.
The other beastman was shocked, watching the second man fall and roll on the ground in pain. He glared at Karl. "You! What do you think you’re doing?!"
Karl cast him a cold glare. "How dare you two get cocky and think of laying a hand on my mate? Do you really want your hands torn off?"
"....." He was speechless but tried retaliating. "You useless beastman! Who do you think you are..."
Karl smashed his fist against his face. Hard enough for his face to bruise and disfigure as he staggered backwards and fell.
Karl glared down at them. "Do you want to leave, or would you appreciate a more precise beating?" he asked.
The beastmen struggled to their feet and quickly rushed off without a second thought; it was clear they couldn’t beat the mad Karl.
As they left, Sunnie stared at Karl with immense shock and confusion as the other husbands came out of their hiding, also confused.
Sunnie couldn’t in her wildest dreams believe what Karl just did. Did he actually defend her? Beat up some people for her? Did the Karl she know do this?
He was probably getting territorial, Sunnie decided. He was getting possessive of who was his "mate," because his affection level didn’t increase!
"Wow," Luka stared at Karl. "Am I seeing things? Did you just.. defend the female?"
"We’re probably seeing things," Eris shook his head.
Karl scoffed, arms folded. "You’re overthinking. I just hated those men for locking us up. Nothing more."
Sunnie raised an eyebrow. "Is that so? Then I guess I don’t owe you any gratitude."
"Not like I asked for it from you," Karl snapped back.
Sunnie scoffed. "Sure." She turned, picked up the basket of herbs. "Come on, Zuna, let’s go."
She turned to leave with Zuna as she stared at Karl who was standing before her. "Are you going to step aside, or should I perhaps kick yours too?" She raised an eyebrow.
Karl subconsciously brought his legs together as he stepped aside, clearing his throat to keep his cool.
Sunnie smiled. "Good boy. See you around." She walked off with Zuna.
The three beast husbands stood and watched them leave.
"I think the female really hates you, Karl," Luka said.
Karl scoffed. "Does it look like I care?"
"Well, saving her like that while being aggressive.. it looks like it," Eris ran a hand through his chin.
"Shut up."
Sunnie on the other hand was stepping out of the tribe to briefly look for the other herbs that weren’t there. (Zuna knew where to find them all.)
On their way, Zuna asked, "Back there, thanks a lot for saving me."
"Don’t mention it at all. Those men were trash. Next time, learn to stand up for yourself, okay? I’ll teach you some of my skills so you can kick their balls next time."
Zuna nodded. "Yes, yes."
They moved for a while before Zuna spoke again. "Back there... that beastman called you his mate... Is he perhaps?"
Sunnie smiled. "Well yeah. They are all my husbands."
"....." Zuna blinked. "All.. one... two... five?"
Sunnie smiled. "Exactly."
"Wow," Zuna smiled, looking excited. "I haven’t experienced having a mate before..."
Sunnie smiled at her. "Don’t worry. It’s not really worth it if you ask me. It’s stressful."
"....."
---
Sunnie was done picking herbs with Zuna. By the time they were done, it was already evening. So the two of them were heavily exhausted after searching through the woods nearly for the remaining herbs. It was harder than Sunnie thought.
The two of them headed back as Zuna helped Sunnie blend the herbs into soup. They boiled it naturally and put it into bowls as Sunnie took it back into the cave.
Some group of men were at the cave’s entrance waiting for them with the Chief Elder and Zukka.
Those beastmen weren’t there before, and Sunnie didn’t bother knowing why they were there. She walked past them with the soup she had as the Chief Elder, Zukka, and the men followed behind.
They watched as Sunnie worked. Sitting down by the sides of these sick people, feeding them a small portion of the soup. It was all they needed.
They quietly watched as Sunnie did this as the soup went around to everyone. They’d all had a taste, and the bowl was now empty.
Sunnie sighed as she handed the bowl to Zuna. She held it as Sunnie turned to face the Chief Elder and Zukka who stood in front.
"So? How did it go? Are they okay now?"
"Well, this is the beginning stage of their treatment. With this, there should be some cleansing within their bodies. They’ll sweat more and even vomit more or something like that. It’s part of the cleansing process."
"I’ll provide them with more medication in the coming days. And within that time, they’ll get better."
The Chief Elder smiled with a nod. "That’s good. That’s good... thanks a lot."
"Don’t mention it." She explained, "I’ll also provide some medication that everyone in the tribe needs to take. Or I’ll teach the females who cook how to produce it. That way, everyone can have it to prevent falling ill."
The Chief Elder nodded without any objections.
After she was done speaking, the Chief Elder looked around. He stared at the men standing at a distance and then stared at Sunnie.
"Eh, well, some group of our men brought some complaints about the goddess..."
Sunnie stared at those men standing at a distance. She recognized the three faces of those jerks.
"What did they say?" Sunnie stared at them.
"Well, they said the goddess took advantage of her powers and brought harm to them while collaborating with the cursed beastmen..." the Chief Elder repeated.
"Is that so?" Sunnie stared at him.
"And..." The Chief Elder cleared his throat as though thinking of how to phrase the next statement. "Well, they also said that you... you kicked.. or smashed one of their..." He couldn’t say it, so he gestured in the direction of one’s balls.
Zukka’s face went pale in shock.
