Chapter 36: 36: Think Fast.

But Zuna turned and bowed to the elders, pleading, "Please forgive her! She has been sick all day long and she forgot the way! Please don’t give her the harsh punishment of 100 whips!"

Sunnie gasped. "Hundred what now—?"

Zuna slapped a hand over her mouth to shut her up before she finished. Sunnie was still baffled—why the fuck would they whip her a hundred times for not kneeling down to some random ass kid?

The clan heir saw Zuna pleading for Sunnie. And so he got up to his feet and said, "Forget it, let’s continue."

He proceeded with the ritual as the elders cleared their throats and cast deadly eyes at Sunnie before sitting down.

Zuna pulled Sunnie away immediately.

Everyone watched as the clan heir carried out the task—pouring wine around the meat and holding the meat up while saying some prayers.

Everyone chanted along while Sunnie stood by the side, realising that she hadn’t been to church in over a year now.

The clan heir threw the meat into the huge burning fire after all was done, and everyone broke into celebration again. Singing, dancing, eating, drinking, and all.

It was a full-blown celebration mode now. The Chief Elder had announced that the beastmen they caught would be sacrificed after the females’ performance.

And while the females performed, Sunnie and Zuna stood at a distance, thinking of a way to save them.

Little Black wasn’t with them; Sunnie was too busy brainstorming to realise. He was busy forced into labour, serving loud and annoying men.

Little Black kept rolling his eyes, irritated as he served. Then he took a cup of wine to some men in front, some supposed hunters.

The men were laughing loudly over their big catch the other day while they drank. And as Little Black brought the drink, one took it, drank, and spat it out.

"What old wine is this?"

"....." Little Black stared at him.

"How can you serve me old wine?" The beastman asked, looking down at Little Black.

"This little brat..." Another poked Little Black on the forehead as he staggered backwards. "Is this little brat a female?"

"Annoying little female. How can someone marry you like this?" He poked him hard on the forehead.

Little Black was short-tempered, but he endured all their harsh insults and poking. He couldn’t let himself be exposed.

But another poked Little Black and said, "What an ugly little thing!"

They all roared with laughter at Little Black as he frowned, clenching his fist at them. He had had enough, and immediately Little Black jumped into the air.

"I’m not ugly!!!!" He exclaimed as he swirled in the air and landed a foot on the beastman’s face. The beastman fell off his seat backwards.

Shocked, everyone turned and stared at Little Black who was now standing. His wig was off, and his black rabbit ears stood tall.

Everyone gasped at the scene.

"What’s that thing..."

"What’s with those ears.. is that a lion...?"

"Does it look like one...?"

"That’s an evil monster...."

Everyone was alert now, standing as men pulled out their weapons at Little Black.

Little Black stood, looking around. He guessed he had already fallen into trouble; now he had to face the beast.

Sunnie and Zuna blinked.

"This is bad. They’ll sacrifice him too," Zuna said.

Sunnie closed her eyes, took a deep breath and said, "Oh well. I guess here’s my cue."

Sunnie stepped forward, walking quickly towards Little Black to heroically defend the little one.

"Everyone back off! I won’t let you harm—" Sunnie was about getting closer to Little Black when she suddenly tripped her foot on a rock and fell flat on her face.

"....."

The crowd went silent as everyone stared at her. Her wigs were off, her long white rabbit ears were standing tall, her tail already out and showcasing herself.

Sunnie felt everything fall apart as she gasped, praying that the ground would open so she could fall inside.

"You’re not helping matters at all," Little Black said to her.

Sunnie slowly got up to her feet, cleaning her clothes while enduring the shame she had just passed through.

She was exposed, and there was nothing she could do about that.

Luka blinked. "Was that part of her plan?"

Eris shrugged. "I guess we’ll never know."

The Chief Elder got to his feet and glared at them. Everyone stared in shock and disbelief. "Speak now! Who are you people?!"

Sunnie hesitated as she turned, staring at them all.

"They’re probably intruders sent by some evil omen! They’re here to ruin our ritual. Catch them up and sacrifice them all too!"

"Yes!"

"Kill them!"

"Burn them!"

"Sacrifice them!"

Everyone was already cheering loudly while Sunnie and Little Black stepped backwards.

"Do you perhaps have a plan? Or are we going to be dinner for all tonight?" Little Black inquired.

Sunnie looked around, thinking of what to do.

And as the beastmen approached closer to catch them, she suddenly thought of something.

"How dare you all touch me?! A messenger of the great moon god!" She said aloud with conviction.

Silence. Everyone paused, stared at each other, and then stared at Sunnie, confused.

Sunnie had realised that they were religious fanatics. She had met such people in the real world, and she knew exactly how their mentality worked.

So she guessed: why doesn’t she just use it against them since she already had the modern tricks to play along with?

"What rubbish!" The Chief Elder snapped. "How can some evil omen like you claim to be of the Moon god! How slanderous! Capture them now so we can sacrifice them along with the rest and gain redemption!"

The beastmen moved closer again to capture Sunnie, but Sunnie thought of something else to do quickly.

"If you touch me, you’ll be angering the Moon god. And not only will he send illness and dirty water to your people, he will bring immense death to the land through fire!"

As she announced this, everyone paused, fear appearing on the faces of the people.

She was a strange animal most of them hadn’t seen before, so some had started finding her words believable.
