Chapter 35: 35: Error

The atmosphere was lively and bustling that night. The campfire set in the middle illuminated the noisy scenery as beastmen moved around, showcasing their traditional dances.

The crowd cheered in mass celebration of the exciting performances. The beast ladies also performed after them, setting the atmosphere in a more celebratory tone.

"Bring in the sacrifice! The moon god is active tonight!" the Chief Elder declared.

He was an older beastman sitting at a designated spot around the fire. Around him were some other elderly beastmen and some younger beastmen. The Chief Elder of the clan stared into the sky as he declared.

Soon, some beastmen dragged the five beast husbands into the scene. All of them were tied down with strong ropes around their hands, bodies, and legs, impossible for them to break free.

The crowd cheered loudly, dancing and chanting as the five beastmen were brought and made to kneel before them all.

Sunnie was amongst the crowd. She and Little Black were with other ladies, still disguised as lions. They moved around, serving meals to the men. And then, Sunnie caught sight of her beast husbands.

They looked pathetic and exhausted. They had been beaten up to pulp that she could see their bruised faces. Even the perfect pretty Eris was looking a mess.

She couldn’t help but stare at Azure. He was on the floor, his tail out. He still looked pale and drained, like someone who was going to collapse in the next minute.

She could tell he hadn’t been healed yet.

"Burn them!"

"Sacrifice them!"

"Burn them!"

"Kill them!"

"Evil omen!"

"Kill them to revive our clan!"

The crowd of men soon began cheering loudly.

The Chief Elder slowly got up to his feet. He raised his hands to calm them down.

Then he began with his prolonged speech. He spoke about how great their clan had been developing with the help of their moon god, and how suddenly illness and dirty water had plagued them (he explained how some of their great men had been bedridden without hope of being saved).

He explained how these jinxed, vicious beastmen were the cause of their problems, suggesting that their presence provoked their god. And he said that sacrificing them to their god tonight on this auspicious day would be the best way to cleanse their land.

Everyone cheered loudly at his speech as he continued. He explained the program of things and then they began with their prayer.

They chanted some prayers while Sunnie stared at her husbands, thinking of how she’d save them. When they were done chanting, they proceeded to feed the god.

"Our clan heir here will conduct the programme of feeding our moon god!" the Chief explained.

Everyone stared in anticipation as Sunnie was urged to present the slab of meat to the clan heir.

The clan heir, a teenage looking beastman (or beast boy?) who was sitting at another angle around the fire, was like their "prince" and he was given this responsibility.

Sunnie was to hand him the meat he’d use for the ritual. All eyes were on Sunnie as she made her way to the clan heir. She soon arrived before him and casually handed him the huge slab of meat.

"....!"

Everyone gasped in shock.

"What is she doing?!"

"How dare she...?!"

"How audacious of a female!"

Sunnie was confused. Everyone had been staring at her from the moment she started moving till when she got here. And they were staring at her with immense shock and disbelief as if she was carrying poop on her head.

She turned and looked around; indeed, all eyes were on her. And they were speechless. They muttered something amongst themselves. She felt she had done something extremely wrong!

"How dare..." the Chief Elder slowly got up to his feet again with his staff.

The clan heir was staring up at her. He was young, clearly younger than Sunnie because he was in his teens or something. He had brown fluffy hair and lion ears, some tribal marks on his face which made him look adorable and handsome at the same time.

He was shirtless, his tribal beads dangling around his neck and arms, and then he had a brownish loincloth around his waist.

He didn’t seem shocked; the clan heir simply stared at her, impressed.

"What...?" Sunnie stared at the beast boy. "What did I do...?"

Everyone gasped more. And immediately, Zuna rushed into the scene. She grabbed Sunnie by the arms and brought her down to her knees. They both were on their knees as Sunnie stared at her, shocked.

"What?"

"They’ll kill you," Zuna muttered. "They’re angry!"

"Why?" Sunnie whispered back.

"You didn’t take the traditional procedures for the rituals! You were supposed to be on your knees while you move. Walk on your knees and approach the clan heir and serve the meat without even staring at his face, on your knees! You can’t casually walk like that!"

"....." Sunnie was speechless. She blinked and realized how grave her error was. She had made a mistake, and now she wondered if they’d be coming for her head!

She slowly turned, meeting the eyes of the furious beastmen who were already judging her.

Her eyes met with her husbands, and they were giving her shocked looks.

She could read their eyes and it was clear they recognized her almost immediately. Now they were wondering what the hell she was doing there.

"What’s she doing here...?" Luka asked in a whisper.

"She’s probably not here for the meat, I guess..." Eris shook his head.

"Maybe she’s here for a drink?" Luka asked as Eris gave him a judgmental glare.

Sunnie instantly bent her head as she handed the meat to the clan heir. He didn’t make a fuss; he accepted the meat.

But the elders didn’t seem happy at all. Already standing up, the Chief Elder said, "What terrible conduct from a female! She should be punished for such an ignorant mistake!"
