Chapter 120: The Hero Fell

Flashback:

Just a half hour ago, right after L and Alen ran away from the path.

A girl was walking quietly in the direction of the abandoned park. Her steps were light and graceful. She had long purple hair and striking lavender eyes. Her beautiful face felt completely out of place in this rough area, shining much brighter in her elegant clothes. Her expressionless face somehow made her look even more beautiful and mysterious to anyone who passed by.

She looked around the streets, searching for the familiar place she had heard about from Lyris.

’Where is this park? I came to this general area, but I don’t really know where it is exactly...’

Just as she was trying to find the specific location, several people hurried past her. They paused mid-step as they caught sight of her ethereal beauty. Some of the older men, who seemed to have kind intentions, stepped forward to warn her.

"Young lady, you should leave this place as soon as possible. The ’Hero’ of the city just alerted everyone that some highly dangerous wanted criminals are roaming around this area. You should head home as soon as possible..."

Ava’s eyes narrowed slightly at their concerned comments.

’Wanted criminals? If that is the case, then I have to go take them back. They might be in some serious trouble...’

She looked at the old man and spoke softly, her face remaining expressionless.

"Can you tell me, is there a park around this place? My friends are currently there, so I have to go take them with me..."

The old man nodded his head rapidly and pointed down the road.

"Yes, lady, there is an old park which has been abandoned for quite a long time. If you go straight down this street, turn toward the right, go straight again, and then turn left, you will easily find it..."

Ava nodded and bowed slightly in appreciation.

"Okay, thank you for your help..."

She didn’t wait for the man to answer or protest. She stepped forward and began to walk swiftly toward that direction.

As she continued to walk, she suddenly caught the heavy smell of blood drifting through the air. Her lavender eyes narrowed into thin slits.

’Something is definitely off around this place. It seems some fight has just commenced here...’

She didn’t wait to walk any longer. She vanished into thin air, looking as if she had never been standing on the street in the first place.

Her figure reappeared instantly inside the destroyed park. She looked around at the horrific scene. Hundreds of dead bodies were lying around the frozen, shattered ground. Her expression turned grim as she searched the gore for any familiar faces.

"It seems I am too late... But I am glad they are not among these bodies..."

Her eyes caught sight of the water droplets spilled on the broken ground. Her expression remained unchanged as she analyzed the remnants of the magic.

"It seems some strong person has dared to attack them... I have to catch that person before he can reach them..."

She looked up at the open air as her sensory perception increased tremendously. She stretched her awareness, searching for the familiar mana signatures of her friends.

As she searched, she finally sensed their distant presence.

"They are alright... At least for now..."

As she continued to search the perimeter with her eyes closed, she also sensed something else. A massive source of energy was moving through the air, heading straight toward their direction at an extremely fast speed.

"It seems that is the ’insect’ who is chasing behind them..."

Her expression turned visibly darker. Suddenly, a dense, dark energy coiled around her form. The air around her suddenly flickered, as if space itself hesitated to exist near her. She looked straight up toward the dark sky from where she could sense the approaching person.

"You will have to pay for touching them..."

Her form dissolved into the shadows as she disappeared from the ruined park.

...

High in the sky, Kalos was flying straight toward his targets. He channeled his massive mana and used his signature magic.

[Water Manipulation: Aegis Wall!]

As he activated the spell, the entire outer edge of the city was suddenly covered by a massive, towering wall of impenetrable water from all directions.

"Damn you, f*cker! How long are you going to run away from me? I was originally just thinking of punishing you and making you beg, but now you have crossed the line. I am going to torture you and cut you into tiny pieces..."

His obsidian eyes turned intense, filled with boiling rage as the heavy rain started to fall from the dark sky.

"Hehe... It seems even nature itself is supporting me..."

He increased his flight speed twofold as he sensed their drifting figures running desperately through the pouring rain.

"Hehe... Found you!"

He burst forward through the air. But suddenly, he was caught by the back of his collar by someone appearing out of nowhere. Before he could even react, he was thrown backward with incredible, bone-crushing speed.

*BOOOOM!*

His figure blurred as he was launched backward several meters through the air. He crashed violently through the empty streets, smashing through brick walls. A set of street headlights shattered and fell on his head as he hit the hard concrete.

The rain fell rapidly, washing away the dust from the impact. The fallen bricks and debris were quickly covered in heavy rain droplets.

Kalos arose, sliding out from the pile of bricks and pebbles. His body was mostly fine; just a trickle of blood was spilling from his head where the broken headlight had struck him. He stumbled as he tried to stand up. His rage boiled over as he frantically searched for the powerful being who had dared to throw him back.

"Who the f*ck is it?! Who dares to lay their hand on me?! I am going to kill you!"

A dense layer of water started to coil around him protectively. The water droplets from the wet ground started to float around his body, making the surrounding air feel heavy and suffocating. He slowly lifted his gaze, his eyes burning with an infernal, murderous glow as he searched for his mysterious assailant.

His blurry vision, however, was immediately drawn to a figure now standing calmly at the exact spot he had just occupied in the sky. She descended to the ground with an almost ethereal grace. Her long purple hair cascaded around her, completely untouched by the torrential rain. Her lavender eyes, which were usually expressionless, now held a chilling, freezing intensity that seemed to pierce right through the downpour, staring directly into his soul. Her elegant feet landed softly on the rainy street.

"You... you have made a grave mistake..."

Kalos, still reeling from the unexpected assault, finally managed to stabilize his footing. However, a deep tremor ran through his very being at the sight of her. The sheer, overwhelming power radiating from her was palpable, even across the distance separating them.

"You dare to attack me?"

Kalos roared, his voice cracking with a mixture of pain and arrogant disbelief. He tried to wipe the blood from his eyes and clear the dizziness so he could look at her properly.

"Do you know who I am?! I am Kalos! The ’Hero’ of this city! I protect these people!"

Ava merely tilted her head. A faint hint of something akin to disgust flickered in her beautiful lavender eyes.

"A ’hero’ who preys on the innocent? A ’hero’ who threatens those under my protection, my friends?"

Her voice remained eerily calm, but it was as sharp as a blade.

"Your ’heroics’ end right here. I don’t care what you want with them, but if you dare to walk one single step toward them, then you will lose your life."

As his vision finally cleared, Kalos looked closely at the figure standing before him. Her beautiful face was illuminated by the ambient city light, her purple hair perfectly highlighting her flawless, expressionless features.

Her sheer beauty struck something deep in his heart. He immediately stopped talking, closed his mouth, and just stared at her in utter awe.

’Is she a goddess or something? How can she be so incredibly beautiful?....’

He just continued to stare at her, captivated. His overall rage, his murderous intent, and even the thought of any revenge vanished into thin air.

"Who are you?..." Kalos breathed out.

Ava’s eyes narrowed as she looked at him.

"I don’t answer a stranger’s questions. Why do you want to harm them?! I will give you exactly one chance to answer..."

Kalos swallowed hard as he looked at her in a lovestruck daze.

"Oh! No, no, I did not want to harm the guy! I just came over to say hello! It is completely alright. Haha..."

He scratched the back of his head awkwardly, acting like a flustered schoolboy as he tried to push her accusations away.

"Hmph? Is that so?... Then why were you running toward them with killing intent and why did you create this massive water barrier?.."

His face turned pale. He tried to step back but hit a pebble and stumbled clumsily.

"Oh, no, it’s just... hah, yes! I just wanted to give him a reward! There was a tournament that happened in the past, and we have special rewards to give him, but he just forgot to come get it! I was finding him to give back the special reward, but I couldn’t find him... But now I have found him, I am just going there to give him that... haha..."

He lied awkwardly, trying to sound as casual and charming as possible while looking at her beautiful, expressionless face.

"Oh... Is that what it is... Mhmm... Okay. You can come with me then... You can give the reward to him..."

Kalos’s expression lit up with pure joy at the thought of joining the beautiful girl.

"Oh, yes! Let’s go! I am happy to serve—I mean, give him the gift..."

He quickly walked over to stand beside her. He summoned a high-grade potion from his inventory and drank it, instantly healing the wound on his head. He wiped the blood and mud from his clothes using his water magic. He then summoned a large black umbrella, wearing the most beautiful, charming smile he could muster as he shielded her from the falling rain.

"It is an honor for me to lead you, my lady..."

Ava stared at him for a second, finding his weird, sudden shift in behavior quite unusual. But she then started walking forward, ignoring him completely.

As both figures started walking toward the direction where L and Alen had run away, Kalos made several attempts to impress her. He tried his absolute best to charm the beautiful girl walking beside him, but her expressionless face didn’t even waver once as they walked together through the rainy street.
