Chapter 118: Chapter 118 - Feelings
Cassian and Lilith left the doctor’s chamber, walking alone without guards.
"Have you positioned your soldiers to be prepared for any unexpected attacks? What you did to my father might give others the idea to overthrow us and become the next royals. I don’t want my time as queen to be short-lived," Lilith said, examining the soldiers patrolling the courtyard.
"I’ve taken great measures to ensure the castle cannot be stormed. My family is here, so I will be most careful. I’m starting to gather members of a court. We cannot go without one forever," Cassian said, already knowing what Lilith would think.
"Of course we can’t, but I wish we could. Once they get comfortable, they start to get a little too mouthy. I am not fond of old, proud men who have sat on their buttocks their entire lives, hiding behind their gates, who suddenly think they know what is best for everyone," Lilith vented.
"I take it there are some men you are not fond of at the moment," Cassian said, relieved that her anger was not directed at him.
"Yes, and if I see them in your court, then I am going to poison them. There is no in-between." Lilith warned Cassian.
"Where are you getting so much poison from?" Cassian wondered, genuinely amazed she had not yet run out.
Lilith shrugged her shoulders. "It is my servants who find it so easily. It does concern me now that they can get their hands on poison so readily. I will have them expose their sources, so poison will be harder to obtain."
"You have only now thought of this?" Cassian asked.
"Yes," Lilith nodded. "I cannot take chances of anyone who is my enemy getting a hold of it now. That is why I should make you taste all of my food first."
"There is a royal taste tester, and there is metal dipped into our food before it is served to us. I have become more strict with it after the stunt you pulled," Cassian shared, forever reminding Lilith of her awful plan.
"Think of it as I am helping you to see the cracks. How someone can slip by your eyes to harm us," Lilith said, trying to make her old plot positive.
"You worry me. That is what you do," Cassian admitted, looking away from Lilith.
"Life wouldn’t be exciting if you were always calm. I make your life exciting. That is how you should say it to others," Lilith corrected him with a sly grin. "Have you been faced with talk about us having an heir yet?"
"It has come up," Cassian admitted. "Some of my relatives think we should secure our future by having a prince. Your half-brother still lives."
"And now that I am unwell, you will prolong this matter. I hope you will tell your court that it is you who is not eager to have a child," Lilith said as she knew the blame would fall upon her. "Was I eager to have a child with you before? We wouldn’t have had a duty then."
"But you loved children. You were eager to have our first," Cassian answered, his voice softening with memory.
"I see. Were you eager?" Lilith inquired, paying careful attention to his face.
"I was. Had I known you were sick and it would have made you more ill, I might have asked that we wait. You attempted to make clothing, but you did not succeed. I might have spent more money on clothes than food in those days," Cassian said, smiling at the fond recollection.
"You are making me curious about what life could be outside of the castle. My mother used to tell me about her days before she became a castle maid. I don’t remember the stories well since it was so long ago," Lilith said, wishing the stories would be clear as day. "I do wonder what it would be like to be free."
"Would you leave the castle for good?" Cassian asked, willing to retreat to their old home.
"No, because it is all that I have ever known and wanted. I will confess that now that I am queen, it isn’t as shiny as I thought it would be. I wanted it before because they said I couldn’t have it, and I wanted to avenge my mother," Lilith shared with honesty.
"There are moments when I am disappointed, but learning what Virgil did to the orphanages as well as what the nobles did, I want to stay queen to protect the people. Perhaps, one day you can show me where it is that we lived," Lilith said, eager to step out of the castle even if it wouldn’t be for long.
Lilith wanted to see with her own eyes the places Cassian had spoken of. She wanted to experience a life where she didn’t always need to plot, as there wouldn’t be danger all around. She wanted to see where her life could have headed had it gone differently.
"I can arrange a day for us to live in the castle and to visit the village your mother grew up in. You had figured out where it was, and I remember. Take your medicine so we can travel there sooner," Cassian advised, his gaze lingering on her.
Lilith looked up at Cassian, and a fluttery feeling built in her chest. She looked away before he noticed and questioned her about it. Her eyes fixed on the path ahead, but her thoughts betrayed her.
Lilith realised, with a sudden rush of emotion, that she was beginning to fall for him. The man whose only purpose to her was to get rid of her enemies was now becoming something more. The thought unsettled her, yet it filled her with a sweetness she had not known in years.
Lilith looked to the right, hiding a smile from Cassian’s view.
Since the feelings could fade by nightfall, Lilith decided to keep it all to herself so as not to give Cassian false hope.
