Chapter 117: Chapter 117- Unwell

In a small chamber elsewhere, Lilith sat with her arms folded, waiting for Cassian to finish speaking to the doctor. She felt like a child waiting for her parent to be done discussing her health.

"Thank you," she heard Cassian say to the doctor.

At last, she could leave.

"Did he tell you that I am well and you didn’t need to bring me here?" Lilith asked, her eyes searching Cassian’s face for reassurance.

"You are not well, Lilith," Cassian shared the unfortunate news. "We need to limit how much you move around, and he needs to brew medicine for you daily. You’re unwell because you have never been properly treated the times you were sick."

"I had my servants steal medicine," Lilith admitted. She watched as the doctor stared at her, wide-eyed, as though he had finally uncovered a great mystery. "I didn’t see doctors, but I did what I could to stay healthy."

"Leave us," Cassian ordered the doctor.

"Yes, Your Majesty," the doctor replied, bowing quickly before hurrying out of the chamber.

The door closed with a dull thud, leaving the two of them alone.

Cassian turned to Lilith. "We have time before you were meant to die-"

"You said yourself that so much has changed compared to the first life you lived. What if the time of our deaths has changed as well? I want you to forget about the two years, because our lives are different now. Forget it," Lilith ordered, though her heart trembled beneath the words. "You’ve only been good at predicting what wasn’t affected."

Lilith rose from her chair. "My mother always said you cannot cheat death. She believed death was a creature that came to claim you, and he doesn’t like to be played. You can’t escape it."

"You say this as though you are ready to die," Cassian said, frustrated.

"I have always been ready for death, Cassian. Since they took my mother from me, there was nothing left for me to want. I was going up against my royal family. I knew that death could be waiting for me, and I wasn’t afraid. I’ve become numb to it," Lilith confessed.

Her chest ached as she spoke, though her face remained composed.

Cassian stepped forward and grabbed Lilith by her shoulders. He had hoped this part of her had changed. Rather than scold her or argue, he rested his head against her shoulder. His silence spoke louder than words.

"You’re a soldier. You know that with every battle you ride into, you might not return. I don’t walk around worrying about death, and I’m well now. I am going to take the medicine," Lilith said, trying to give Cassian comfort. "I just became queen, so I’ll make an effort to get healthy."

Her eyes flickered to the bottles of medicine lined neatly on the table. She remembered all the bitter tastes and shuddered.

"But if my sickness is far out of the doctor’s hands to heal me, then I can accept that. I’ve always been sick and needed to steal medicine or wait for it to go away. How unfortunate you picked a pitiful soul to love," Lilith said, pitying Cassian.

Lilith felt something drip onto her shoulder. She froze, realising it had to be Cassian’s tears.

Lilith hesitated, her hands remaining still before she raised them to pat Cassian’s back. "I apologise for the tone I spoke in. I wouldn’t be happy to hear of someone I love being so numb to death. At the very least, I am going to take the medicine."

Cassian embraced her tightly. He hated to think of her being so ill again, but just as he had vowed before, if he were to lose Lilith, he would follow her in death. His devotion was a chain binding him to her.

"You’re a very good boy," Lilith said, trying to lighten the mood, her lips curving faintly as she felt him go still.

"Lilith, I am not a pet," Cassian replied, pulling away.

"You are not? I have been thinking of you as my devoted little pet. Little still haunts you," Lilith teased, laughing at his expression. "We must do something to get past this awful mood. What have you been doing to get a tear in your shirt?"

She knew she could mend it herself.

"I was training the castle guards. They are not the best fighters. I will throw away the shirt-"

"Throw away?!" Lilith exclaimed, her eyes widening. "I have been speaking of saving money to rebuild the kingdom and put it back in good order, yet you would speak about throwing away a shirt?"

"Forgive me," Cassian said quickly.

"I have only now come to realise that I married a man who might have been spoiled," Lilith said, shaking her head.

"You did not complain when I sent for the new dresses, jewels, and shoes for you," Cassian pointed out.

"Because it came out of your wealth from the Mortimer family," Lilith replied, folding her arms. "First, you take me to smell this awful medicine, and then you seek to waste money."

"Are you starting an argument to distract me from giving you the medicine?" Cassian asked, his brow raised.

Lilith dropped her arms to her side with a sigh. "I despise you and all that you know. If I must take medicine, then you, as my loving husband, will have to take it too. I will be kind and stop referring to you as my pet. You shall be introduced as my husband."

Cassian frowned, though his eyes softened. "Who have you spoken to about me being your pet?"

"No one yet, but I just thought of getting it started," Lilith confessed.

Cassian chuckled, unbothered by her plans. "Well, I hope you abandon that plan. Before you are forced to stay in bed and drink medicine, would you like to join me on a walk? I can show you what I have done with the guards’ training. They are suffering."

Lilith reached for Cassian’s arm. "Well, it is hard to say no to such an exciting show."
