Chapter 119: Chapter 119 - Dutiful wife

Lilith and Cassian continued their walk alone, watching the maids hurry about and glancing over the training Cassian had prepared for the castle guards.

Soon, for Lilith to rest, they returned to the castle to await her medicine.

Lilith sat on the bed with folded arms. She hated the idea of swallowing something bitter, certain the taste would be vile and the scent equally awful. Her stomach twisted at the memory of past remedies, each one a punishment disguised as healing.

"Don’t pout, Lilith. Even little children are better than you when it comes to medicine," Cassian said, his tone teasing.

"Well, I have memories of all the medicine I stole being dreadful. It punished me for taking it without permission. You should send for some fruit so I can eat afterwards to rid myself of the taste. I didn’t eat much during my gathering," Lilith shared, hoping he would take pity on her.

"You are trying to get rid of me," Cassian said, though he rose without hesitation to do as she asked. "I will personally pick out the fruit and cut it for you. Then you won’t have to worry about eating it."

"You are too kind. So kind that I don’t trust you," Lilith said, narrowing her eyes. "I am toying with you, but you already know that."

"I do," Cassian replied, his eyes softening. "I’ll send Mary inside to offer you some company. The next time you sit with ladies, try to make a friend so that in these moments, you won’t be alone. Plot to make a friend instead of trying to kill them."

"There is no fun in that. Besides, I was trying to make a friend. There was one young lady who seemed well, but I would have to meet her a little more to know it isn’t an act," Lilith said, already planning her next gathering.

"Before you go, take off your shirt," Lilith said suddenly, unable to bear the sight of the tears in the fabric. "You must be more careful with your clothing."

"Lilith, I don’t think now is the time for us to be intimate. Ha," Cassian chuckled, ducking as Lilith hurled a pillow at him.

"I am going to fix the hole. Forget what I said earlier, since that is all over. You spoiled yourself from having a good night," Lilith said, reaching for another pillow.

"I would rather you be well," Cassian said, pulling the shirt over his head. "I will be back soon. Is there more you shall need?"

"A new husband?" Lilith shot back, but she didn’t mean it.

"Do you wish to see another man’s head roll?" Cassian asked in a tone that carried a dangerous edge, yet he was amused.

"That would be quite amusing, but I would love water as well. You must wear another shirt," Lilith spoke quickly before Cassian reached the door.

"I am well aware. I was going to send for Mary before I leave. You must show this side of you more often," Cassian said, pausing to study her. "I quite like it."

Lilith stayed silent. Cassian couldn’t be more wrong about her.

She remained quiet until Cassian dressed and left the chamber. Only when she was alone did she rise, picking up his discarded shirt. She searched for a needle and thread.

The act of mending was more intimate than she wished to admit.

During her search, Mary entered the chamber.

"Your Majesty, I was told you were to remain in bed because you are unwell. Should I go find some medicine for you?" Mary asked, already knowing where to steal it.

"No," Lilith shook her head. "Thinking of the medicine you bring me unsettles my body. Would you be a dear and find me some thread? I have found a needle, but there is no thread in this chamber."

Mary moved quickly to start the search, but when she noticed a man’s shirt in Lilith’s hand, she slowed.

Mary looked at the shirt with curiosity. The only times she had seen Lilith mending clothes were when her own dresses had torn as the fabric weakened by time. To see her holding Cassian’s shirt was something else entirely.

Mary looked away, not wanting to embarrass Lilith, though her mind was already plotting. ’I must get on his good side,’ she thought.

If Lilith was going to keep failing in love with Cassian, then Mary could warm up to him.

Mary found the thread easily and returned to Lilith’s side. "Would you like me to mend the shirt for you?"

"No, I am somewhat good at it after years of practise. You can sit down. My husband only sent for you to offer me some company," Lilith said, her attention fixed on the task.

"Your husband?" Mary repeated.

Lilith heard the teasing in her voice. She looked up and saw Mary smiling. "Rather than sit, I think you should face a wall. It is what you deserve for being cheeky. He is my husband."

Mary turned obediently.

Lilith sighed. "You know I don’t truly want you to stare at a wall, Mary. Just sit and keep your thoughts to yourself. Each day, you give me new reasons to send you to the dungeon as punishment, but I hold back because I care for you. Don’t force me to change my mind."

"You know I would do anything to go to the dungeon so I could torture the nobles there. I hear there are still some left waiting for their punishments. Could I please go there? I could pretend to be a prisoner and try to fool them with an escape plan," Mary suggested, her eyes gleaming with mischief.

"I am not going to punish you in a way that seems like a reward. Do not make me consider having you face the wall, Mary. I am quite tempted," Lilith said, her head bent low as she focused on the shirt.

Mary couldn’t resist one last jab. After all, she had been sent to keep Lilith in good spirits. "You have truly turned into a dutiful wife."

"The wall, Mary. You must face the wall," Lilith said, pointing her finger at the wall.
