Chapter 127: Hiding something.
LAWRENCE.
"Arrrrghhhhh!"
The frustrated scream burst out of my mouth before I could stop it, echoing loudly throughout the room.
Both of my brothers immediately turned to look at me.
Their expressions mirrored the same curiosity, though each of them wore it differently.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Leonard asked, his voice laced with obvious annoyance, as he frowned deeply as he rubbed one of his ears. "Are you trying to burst my eardrums?"
Despite his irritated tone, I could not help letting out a small chuckle. I knew that anger wasn’t truly directed at me.
Ever since Theresa had left the house, Leonard had not been himself.
The smallest mistakes that he normally would have ignored now earned the poor omegas a sharp tongue.
He snapped at them over spilled drinks, and he scolded them over minor delays. He seemed permanently irritated, as though every little inconvenience was enough to push him over the edge.
It was obvious something was bothering him, and I clearly knew what was bothering him.
Lurgard, on the other hand...he didn’t even bother hiding his emotions. Unlike Leonard, who at least attempted to maintain some composure, Lurgard made no effort whatsoever.
He was like a madman pacing around with barely restrained fury. Every expression on his face screamed frustration and every word that came out of his mouth carried impatience.
He clearly couldn’t stand the fact that Theresa was no longer within his sight.
Watching both of them react this way left me thoroughly confused, as I genuinely couldn’t understand it.
Why were both of my brothers so attached to my mate?
The thought crossed my mind again.
For a brief moment, I almost confessed the truth. I almost told them that Theresa was my mate.
The words had nearly reached my lips, but I swallowed them back, because Theresa still needed both of them at this moment. Revealing everything now would only complicate matters further.
"Theresa hung up the moment Alex entered," I finally said, making sure to deliberately emphasize every single word.
The room instantly became silent.
"What?" Lurgard barked, as his voice rose sharply as his expression darkened. "What is that vile creature doing to my Theresa now?"
The possessiveness in his tone was impossible to ignore.
"I have no idea," I answered honestly. "I tried calling her back, but she didn’t—" I continued, but I stopped speaking midway through my sentence, as something suddenly clicked inside my head.
My brows slowly rose.
Had I heard him correctly?
I turned fully toward Lurgard.
"What do you mean... by ’my Theresa?’" I asked, stressing each word carefully.
The room fell silent once again, and this time, even the faintest drop of a pin could be heard clearly.
Even Leonard, who had looked completely uninterested only moments ago, slowly turned his head toward Lurgard. His brows furrowed slightly as he waited for an explanation.
"I... I don’t get it," Lurgard said, his brows knitting together as his gaze shifted from me to Leonard and then back again, as he looked genuinely confused, or perhaps, he was only pretending to be. "Can’t I address her the way I want?" he asked, spreading his hands slightly.
His tone remained calm, but there was an edge beneath it, and then his eyes narrowed ever so slightly.
"Or is there something the two of you are hiding from me?" He asked, as this time, his voice was noticeably firmer.
The question instantly made my heart skip a beat, and I swallowed hard immediately.
Without even realizing it, I broke eye contact and turned my face away.
What was wrong with this guy?
Why did it suddenly feel as though he was trying to read straight through me?
Lurgard wasn’t just anyone, he was my brother and he knew me better than most people did. If I pushed this conversation any further...If I questioned him too much...there was a very real chance he would begin questioning me in return.
And if that happened...I wasn’t confident I could hide the truth, as I never had been.
Ever since I was a child, I had always been terrible at concealing my emotions. No matter how hard I tried to act normal...my face always betrayed me, and every thought, every lie and every feeling—It somehow found its way into my expressions.
It was one of my greatest weaknesses.
"You can, Lurgard," Leonard answered before I had the chance to speak, as his voice remained composed as he folded his arms across his chest. "But you sounded so possessive." he added, as he tilted his head slightly while studying Lurgard. "I can’t help wondering if you’re actually the one hiding something from us."
The accusation hung heavily in the air.
For a brief moment, complete silence filled the room.
Leonard’s words immediately made me rethink everything.
Slowly...I turned back toward Lurgard, and this time, I looked at him differently, more carefully and more suspiciously. My eyes searched every tiny change in his expression, and every flicker in his gaze.
"Are you hiding anything?" I finally asked, as I held his gaze, refusing to look away.
Lurgard suddenly burst into laughter. It wasn’t loud, but it was enough to momentarily ease the tension.
"I am not hiding anything," he replied with a small shake of his head, and as he spoke, he casually looked away from us. "I was only worried about Theresa." He shrugged lightly. "So I used the word ’my.’"
His explanation sounded simple, but I chose not to push the matter any further.
I slowly nodded my head in agreement, pretending to accept his answer.
Outwardly, I appeared convinced, but Inwardly...I wasn’t, as something about his explanation didn’t sit right with me—xall it instinct, call it suspicion, whatever it was...It refused to let me believe him completely.
Lurgard was hiding something, and I was so certain of it, but sooner or later...I would find out exactly what it was.
