Chapter 122: Feel secure.
Alex.
What exactly had I said that warranted such a hard slap?
The sting on my cheek still lingered, but it was nothing compared to the confusion clouding my mind.
I genuinely couldn’t understand it.
All I had wanted to do was explain everything to her.
That was all.
There hadn’t been any ill intentions behind my words.
Ella couldn’t have children. It was an unfortunate reality that neither of us could change.
Because of that, I only wanted Eva’s child to have a legitimate place within the pack. If the child carried a proper status, then everyone could acknowledge Ella as the child’s mother.
In my mind, that was the best solution.
I thought I was protecting everyone.
Instead, I had only made everything worse.
"Don’t you ever indirectly refer to me as barren again in your life!" Ella yelled, as her voice echoed through the room with a force I had never heard before.
Every word was filled with hurt, with anger and with years of bottled-up pain.
"Or you can forget about having two Lunas." She added firmly, as her warning hung heavily in the air.
I was completely stunned.
For several seconds, I simply stared at her.
Something inside me tightened.
For the first time in a long while...I actually felt threatened, because the woman standing before me didn’t resemble the Ella I had always known.
The Ella in my memories was gentle, soft-spoken and kind. She was delicate in both words and actions, and she always chose love over confrontation.
She hated raising her voice.
Yet now...she had slapped me, and not only that, she had threatened me. She had looked me straight in the eyes without a trace of hesitation.
The sudden change caught me completely off guard.
"Relax, Ella," I said, forcing my voice to remain calm despite the storm raging inside me, as I swallowed quietly before continuing. "I didn’t mean it that way." I added, as the words felt inadequate the moment they left my mouth. "I won’t do it again." I looked directly into her eyes. "I promise you."
My voice had become noticeably softer, and almost pleading.
I hoped she would see my sincerity, and hoped she would recognize that I wasn’t trying to hurt her.
But Ella remained completely unmoved, as her expression barely changed. It was as though my apology had reached her ears but never touched her heart.
A bitter feeling settled inside my chest.
The truth was...It wasn’t even as though I wanted two Lunas.
Ella had always been my Luna.
The only woman I had ever imagined standing beside me, and nothing about that had changed. At least...that was what I kept telling myself.
After several long moments, Ella finally released a slow breath, and the tension in her shoulders eased slightly as she walked over and sat down.
Neither of us spoke, and an uncomfortable silence immediately settled between us, as the room suddenly felt much smaller and much heavier.
I remained standing there, desperately searching my mind for something—anything—that could make her smile again.
Something that would break this suffocating silence.
In the past, moments like this had never existed between us. We rarely fought and even when we disagreed, we always found our way back to each other.
That was why this felt so unfamiliar and so painfully difficult.
For the first time, I realized I had no idea how to mend the distance growing between us.
I cleared my throat awkwardly, hoping to chase away the uncomfortable silence that had settled between us.
"Ella..." I called softly, scratching the back of my head as I searched for the right words, as a sheepish smile slowly found its way onto my face. "I got us matching outfits for the ceremony."
I spoke carefully, almost cautiously, as though I was testing the waters.
Deep down, I was certain this would lighten her mood.
After all...She had always dreamed about moments like this.
Ever since we got married after realising the fated bond, she had loved the idea of us walking side by side in matching outfits, proudly showing everyone that we belonged together.
Back then, I had never taken those little wishes seriously.
Now...I wanted to give her everything she had ever asked for, and everything I had failed to give her before.
To my relief, Ella’s face brightened almost immediately. A spark of excitement flickered across her beautiful features and the tension in her eyes softened ever so slightly.
I couldn’t help smiling.
I knew it.
I knew she was going to love the surprise.
But before I could enjoy the small victory, she asked the one question I hadn’t prepared for.
"Did you make one for Eva too?"
My smile disappeared instantly, and I felt the color drain from my face.
Seriously...I wasn’t going to survive conversations like this.
Why did she always bring Eva into everything?
Eva was already the biggest mistake of my life—a mistake I desperately wished I could erase.
Why would I buy matching outfits for her too?
"Ella..." I sighed, looking at her almost pleadingly. "Please..." I paused slightly. "I’m begging you." I added firmly. "Stop including Eva in everything." I said, as my voice became quieter. "She isn’t part of us."
The words left my mouth firmly.
At least, that was what I wanted her to believe.
"Really?" Ella asked, a faint amused smile tugging at her lips. "But I can’t help feeling like she’s already a part of us."
Every word pierced through me.
"Stop taunting me, Ella!" I blurted out, unable to stop myself, as frustration overwhelmed me.
I dragged a hand roughly through my hair, trying to calm the growing irritation inside me.
"I am not, Alex," she replied calmly, bas her expression became serious again. "I just don’t feel secure." She paused briefly before adding, "Nor do I feel safe." She added, as her eyes remained locked with mine.
There wasn’t even the slightest trace of hesitation in them.
"That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do!" I said, my frustration finally spilling over. "I’m trying to make you feel comfortable." I paused, "I’m trying to make you feel safe." I added, taking a deep breath, "I’m trying to make you feel secure." I added, as I threw my hands up helplessly. "What exactly do I need to do?"
My voice softened into genuine desperation.
"What do you want from me, Ella?" I asked in total surrender. "What exactly do I have to do to make you finally feel secure?"
She didn’t answer immediately, Instead, she studied me for several long seconds.
Finally, she spoke.
"If you truly want me to feel secure..." She said, her voice calm and steady. "I’ll need you to sign a document." She added, as she looked directly into my eyes. "Would you?"
I froze.
Every thought inside my head came to an abrupt halt.
A document?
What document was she talking about?
