Chapter 116: Depend on myself.

Leonard.

I honestly couldn’t understand what was going on inside Theresa’s head.

No matter how many times I replayed the conversation in my mind, none of it made sense.

Why would she agree to go back with Alex?

The question kept echoing inside my head relentlessly.

Hadn’t we done everything possible to make her comfortable here?

Hadn’t we protected her?

Hadn’t we supported and cared for her?

Then why?

Why was she suddenly willing to return to the very man who had hurt her?

Another thought struck me, and my chest tightened painfully.

Does she love Alex?

The possibility made something dark stir inside me.

I immediately clenched my fists. The pressure was so intense that my knuckles turned white.

The thought alone irritated me more than I cared to admit.

Theresa belonged with us—with me.

How could she possibly love someone else?

How could she choose him after everything?

The questions refused to leave my mind.

Frustration and jealousy churned violently inside me.

I turned toward my brothers and the expressions on their faces mirrored my own thoughts.

None of us understood what had just happened.

For several seconds, we exchanged silent glances and no words were needed, as we all knew exactly what the others were thinking.

Then, almost instinctively, we spoke together.

"And where do you think you are going?"

Our voices echoed through the room in perfect unison.

The sound immediately stopped Theresa, as she froze mid-step and for a brief moment, she remained completely still yet she didn’t turn around.

The sight only fueled my frustration further.

Finally, she spoke. "I’m heading to my room." She said, her voice firm, almost dismissive.

As though the conversation was already over and as though she had no intention of explaining herself.

I immediately ran a hand through my hair.

The gesture did little to calm me, as frustration and anger collided within me. At the same time, another emotion lingered beneath them.

Hurt—a deep, uncomfortable hurt I didn’t want to acknowledge.

"Don’t you think you owe us some explanation?" I asked, as I tried my best to keep my voice steady.

I tried my best not to reveal how much her decision had affected me.

But even to my own ears, something sounded off and vulnerable.

Theresa finally turned around, and her expression wasn’t soft nor was it apologetic. If anything, she looked annoyed.

"Explanation?" One of her brows rose sharply, as her gaze swept across the three of us. "Why don’t you explain to me first why you got such an incompetent lawyer?"

The accusation hit us like a slap.

My brows immediately furrowed.

Before I could respond, Lawrence stepped forward.

"And what do you mean by that?" He asked, his voice sounding calm.

But I knew him too well, and I could tell he wasn’t calm at all.

From the was his jaw had tightened, and his eyes had darkened, he was just as upset as the rest of us.

Theresa let out a bitter laugh. "What now?" Her voice rose immediately. "Are you going to pretend that you aren’t aware the divorce papers are invalid?"

The words exploded through the room.

For a moment, complete silence followed.

Then her anger finally surfaced fully, as her eyes flashed with fury.

"When did you plan on telling me?"

The question came out as a yell, sharp and demanding yet filled with betrayal.

Lurgard immediately moved from where he was standing.

The moment Theresa mentioned the divorce papers again, he seemed unable to remain still.

In a few quick strides, he reached the staircase and grabbed her hand before she could move any further.

"What nonsense are you talking about, Theresa?" He asked, his voice was filled with impatience, as confusion also flashed across his face.

It was obvious he couldn’t understand why she was suddenly believing Alex.

"Those papers are very much valid." He added, as his grip tightened slightly as he stared directly at her. "Don’t let Alex fool you."

There was urgency in his voice now, the kind that came from genuine concern.

"Everything is under control." He added.

The moment those words left his mouth, Theresa’s expression darkened and without hesitation, she pulled her hand away from him.

The movement was sharp and deliberate, almost as if his touch annoyed her.

Then she took a deep breath.

I noticed how heavily her chest rose and fell. She looked exhausted—mentally, emotionally and physically.

"You keep claiming everything is under control!" She yelled, her voice echoing throughout the room as frustration poured from every word. "And I foolishly chose to trust you all."

The accusation hit harder than I expected.

A painful silence followed.

Theresa shook her head, as disappointment filled her eyes.

"But I won’t anymore." She declared.

The declaration was firm and unwavering, as though she had already made up her mind.

"Theresa, don’t do anything foolish in a moment of anger." Lawrence finally spoke.

Unlike Lurgard, his voice remained calm but I knew my brother. I could tell he was struggling just as much as the rest of us.

"Calm down and let’s sort things out." He added, as his tone softened slightly and almost pleading.

But Theresa wasn’t interested.

"I won’t." Her voice rose immediately. "Because right now, I will only depend on myself."

The words rang through the mansion—filled with hurt, filled with disappointment, filled with determination.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

I simply stared at her and studied her and what I saw made my chest tighten.

She looked tired, more tired than I had ever seen her. The past few events had clearly taken their toll.

The constant problems, and everything seemed to be weighing heavily on her shoulders.

She was completely exhausted.

And because of that, I couldn’t bring myself to take her words too seriously, as she was upset and overwhelmed.

She was simply throwing a tantrum born out of frustration.

At least, that was what I wanted to believe, because once she calmed down, she would think rationally again.

She always did.

Theresa wasn’t reckless, she wasn’t impulsive. When her emotions settled, she would definitely find a way out of this mess.

Besides, if she truly intended to leave with Alex, she would have done it already.

The opportunity had been right there, yet she hadn’t gone. Instead, she had asked for three days.

Three days.

That alone told me she was buying time.

The real question was why.

What exactly was she planning?

The thought continued to puzzle me.

Finally, I stepped forward.

"Fine, Theresa!" I said, my voice echoing loudly through the room.

Immediately, everyone fell silent, as all eyes turned toward me and even Theresa paused.

I held her gaze firmly.

"I would be waiting to see what exactly you are about to come up with." I added, my words calm but resolute.

And then I looked toward my brothers. "Let her be."

Lurgard frowned immediately and lawrence looked surprised.

But I didn’t change my mind, because the truth was obvious—Right now, Theresa needed rest more than arguments, explanations and pressure.

She needed time.

And as for me...

My gaze hardened slightly.

I had another problem to deal with—a much bigger one.

It was high time I dealt with Alex once and for all.
