Chapter 306: Chapter 301: The Grand Finale Part 1 (Double-Length) (3)
When she asked that question, He Yanzi was dumbfounded.
He paused for a moment, not yet having decided how to answer, when suddenly they passed over a bumpy section of the road. All four were jostled, and the topic was abruptly changed.
By the time they passed that stretch of road, they had already reached the village entrance.
The two little ones were curiously leaning against the car windows, looking outside, and instantly forgot about what had just happened, exclaiming "wow wow wow" in surprise and delight, pointing and asking questions.
Ye Manman also felt a sense of nostalgia.
After all these years, Qingshui Village still remained the same, with hardly any changes.
The same old dirt roads, the same run-down houses, the same mountains full of lush foliage.
Yet some of those dilapidated houses were clearly new ones that had been built in recent years, indicating that someone in the village was doing quite well.
As soon as their car arrived at the village entrance, many people curiously looked over.
But no one had ever seen someone drive such a nice car back to the village, thinking it must be some big shot and hesitating to approach, until they saw He Chen and Ye Manman through the car window and slowly started recognizing them.
"Oh, isn’t that the kid from the He Family at the end of the village? Dressed so well, looking much fairer, I almost didn’t recognize him!"
"Exactly, I didn’t dare to recognize him just now, though he looked familiar. I didn’t think He Chen would make it big with his wife in Jing City, now he’s probably a big boss, driving such a nice car. I’ve been to town many times but never seen anyone driving such a good car. It must be expensive!"
"Tsk tsk, I didn’t think they really didn’t get divorced. I used to think after Ye Manman got into Qing University she’d definitely dislike He Chen for being uncultured and just a country boy, and they’d end up getting divorced soon. I never expected this. By the way, weren’t there two kids in the back of the car just now? Are they their kids?"
"I think they must be, those two little kids are good-looking, just like Ye Manman. She’s been good-looking since she was a child, and so are her children. They all resemble her."
"I think the boy looks a bit more like He Chen, just not as fierce in the eyebrows and eyes. When he grows up, he’ll probably be even better looking than He Chen."
"..."
The ones recognizing them were basically peers or much older than He Chen, middle-aged folks who envied He Chen’s fortune. But precisely because he seemed to be doing so well, they dared not approach and engage in friendly banter.
It seemed this small car had already become a natural barrier, dividing them and the villagers into two worlds.
About this, neither He Chen nor Ye Manman cared.
They didn’t care when they were living in the village, and they care even less now. What they most wanted to see now was their old home.
The small car progressed slowly, passing by villagers who kept emerging to observe the scene, and soon they saw the familiar old house.
He Chen parked the car at the door, not letting the children out yet. He got out first to open the yard gate, and then went inside with Ye Manman to check if there were any wild animals lurking before coming back to open the car door and let the kids out.
He Chen busily moved the luggage in and tidied up the house while Ye Manman immediately headed to their old room.
He Yanzi held He Yuchu’s hand, and the two kids were immensely curious about the dim and damp-looking brick house.
No need for others to guide them, they excitedly set off to explore around the house, curious about everything.
He Chen did a simple cleanup of the house, boiled several pots of water, and wiped down the tables, chairs, and beds twice with a hot towel. He also scalded the pots, bowls, and plates with hot water before getting another pot of water ready to cool.
Returning to the room, Ye Manman immediately embraced him.
"He Chen, let’s go pay respects to your parents together."
"As a daughter-in-law, I haven’t properly paid them a visit for all these years. It’s really not right. Perhaps your parents have blamed me for taking their son away for so long and being unwilling to come back to see them."
He Chen laughed at her words, patting her head.
"Silly, what do you think I say to them whenever I return each year?"
Ye Manman looked up in his arms, "Could it be about me?"
He Chen pinched her cheek.
"Of course, I married such a beautiful and intelligent wife, and she gave me two adorable children. I’m so proud every time, and I can chat with them for a long time."
