Chapter 442: Sys, Now Back In the Game
Benjamin now had a line across his face—a red vertical slit directly under his right eye, weeping blood in a thin stream that traced a crimson path down his cheek.
The wound was shallow but precise, clearly intended as a warning rather than a killing blow.
He touched the blood with his fingers, his expression unreadable as he examined the crimson substance.
And as he looked at it, he noticed something very important that he hadn’t fully comprehended before:
Something that made his eyes widen with sudden, dawning realization that changed everything he thought he understood about their encounter...
[I just discovered something, Sys... Despite not having any children, Marina sort of counts as a MILF in my dictionary,] Benjamin mused internally, his eyes tracing her form with renewed interest.
{Amazing, Master,} Sys responded flatly, her mental voice utterly devoid of enthusiasm.
[Also, though not as important but still worth mentioning, I can’t seem to stop bleeding from this cut on my face,] Benjamin continued, his internal monologue shifting to a more practical and concerned register as he assessed his physical condition with growing unease.
The gash under his right eye continued to weep a steady stream of blood that traced a crimson path down his cheek and dripped onto his bare chest, showing only little signs of slowing despite his body’s usual regenerative capabilities.
The wound wasn’t deep, but something about the Mjornøx’s energy was interfering with his healing factor in ways he didn’t fully understand yet.
[That hammer axe thing might be a bit more dangerous to keep receiving hits from than I initially thought. I should seriously avoid getting hit by it again. So Sys, I need you to send me detailed information on her unusual movements and attack patterns. I’m switching to an offensive strategy immediately since defense clearly isn’t working in my favor anymore.]
{Understood, Master!} Sys’s response came crisp and immediate, carrying a subtle warmth that had been conspicuously absent from her earlier replies.
There was an eagerness in her tone that Benjamin hadn’t heard in a while, a hint of genuine engagement that made him pause.
[Oooooh? Is it just me or does Sys actually sound joyful for getting attention again after being so quiet lately?] Benjamin teased internally, a smug grin threatening to spread across his face despite the blood still dripping from his wound.
{It’s Master’s imagination, of course,} Sys replied with practiced deflection, and a defensive edge that only confirmed his suspicions. {I am merely performing my assigned functions with optimal efficiency.}
[Yeah, right. I believe you.] [Ben]
With Sys now back in the game and actively providing tactical analysis, Marina’s seeming victory became abruptly cut short.
The balance of power shifted dramatically as Benjamin’s movements grew sharper, more precise, and anticipatory.
He could now predict her attacks before they even began, his body responding to Sys’s guidance with fluid grace that bordered on prescience.
What had moments ago been a more one-sided beating was now becoming an increasingly even exchange.
The truth was; Marina had been relying on her divine armor effect to hide in plain sight and strike Benjamin with her absurd speed, using the element of surprise as her primary weapon.
The armor allowed her to become nearly invisible between strikes, appearing and disappearing like a phantom, her attacks coming from unexpected angles with devastating force that would have killed any ordinary opponent multiple times over.
But those evasive tactics simply couldn’t be hidden from the hyper-analytic Sys, whose perception extended beyond normal sensory limits into realms of awareness that Marina couldn’t even begin to fathom.
The only and deciding leverage she had possessed was now completely lost, rendering her previous advantages null and void.
[Tsk. He suddenly grew sharper and more sensitive to my movements, as if he had developed some kind of sixth sense specifically for countering me,] Marina gritted her teeth in mounting frustration, her dark green eyes narrowing dangerously as she observed Benjamin fluidly evading every single one of her attacks with minimal effort.
The unstable energy from the Mjornøx that had been so devastating moments ago was now being redirected or avoided entirely with casual grace, as if he could see the weapon’s path before she even swung it.
[If I cannot actually hit him with the Mjornøx directly, the weapon becomes effectively useless in this engagement. Its power means nothing if I can’t connect with his body. I’ll have to adapt my strategy. I will use it as a feint, as a distraction to draw his attention while I deal him damage.]
As the fight grew more aggressive and heated, the pace accelerating beyond what most beings could even perceive, Marina executed her plan with practiced precision honed over millennia of combat experience.
She swung the Mjornøx upward, the massive weapon soaring into the sky and drawing Benjamin’s attention momentarily upward—even if only slightly, even for a fraction of a heartbeat, it was enough of an opening for her to exploit.
Marina used that tiny window immediately, closing the distance between them in an explosive burst of speed that defied comprehension.
She slammed her skull directly into Benjamin’s with devastating force, the impact producing a sickening crack that echoed across the battlefield and sent shockwaves rippling through the air around them.
Benjamin’s body reacted to the blow instantly, his form hurtling backward through the air like a ragdoll discarded by a careless child.
He collided with a massive boulder several meters away with such force that it seemed as if the rock had been sitting directly behind him all along, waiting to catch his flight.
The impact produced a thunderous crash that sent shockwaves rippling through the surrounding terrain, and blood splattered across the stony area as the boulder sank in and cracked under the force of his body impacting against it.
Deep fissures spider-webbed across the rock’s surface, and Benjamin’s form was embedded into its face like a grotesque sculpture, the stone crumbling around his impact point.
[Crap, I got completely tricked by that move!] Benjamin realized immediately, his thoughts scrambling as he processed what had just happened and tried to reorient himself. [But even so, what kind of reaction speed does she even possess?! She moves like a lightning bolt given physical form, striking before the thought to dodge even forms in my mind. If this is her level of ability, and Elara is apparently even stronger than her somehow.... Amazons are so terrifying, it’s unfair.]
Attempting to rise up from the rubble and broken stone, Benjamin found himself immediately pinned.
