Chapter 443: Regenerating From a Liquified State (Low-key Guro)

Deep fissures spider-webbed across the rock’s surface, and Benjamin’s form was embedded into its face like a grotesque sculpture, the stone crumbling around his impact point.

[Crap, I got completely tricked by that move!] Benjamin realized immediately, his thoughts scrambling as he processed what had just happened and tried to reorient himself. [But even so, what kind of reaction speed does she even possess?! She moves like a lightning bolt given physical form, striking before the thought to dodge even forms in my mind. If this is her level of ability, and Elara is apparently even stronger than her somehow.... Amazons are so terrifying, it’s unfair.]

Attempting to rise up from the rubble and broken stone, Benjamin found himself immediately pinned.

Marina was already upon him, having followed his trajectory, and she began raining down bone-shattering punches onto his body with relentless fury.

Each blow landed with the force of a meteor striking the earth, pulverizing muscle and shattering bone with gruesome regularity.

So vicious and sustained was her assault that Benjamin’s upper half was gradually buried into the dirt, the ground itself yielding beneath the sheer force of her strikes until he was almost completely submerged in the crater of his own making.

She raised her hand up high to deliver another devastating blow, her fist poised to strike with killing force—but air was suddenly forced out of her lungs in a sharp, pained gasp.

Benjamin’s hand had shot up from his prone position and connected with her abdomen with enormous force, a desperate counterstrike that came from nowhere and delivered with a lot of power.

The impact was so great that Marina was about to be blasted away from him entirely, her body already beginning to lift off the ground from the force of the blow.

But Benjamin’s hand shot forward again and grabbed her hair with savage determination before she could be blown off, his fingers twisting in the auburn strands with cruel intent.

With another immense surge of force, he pulled her body into his knee in a sickening, devastating knee kick that would have turned ordinary men into chunks of unrecognizable meat.

The strike carried enough power to rival being hit by a full-speed train, the impact producing a wet, crushing sound that hinted at serious internal damage.

Suddenly:

Marina’s grip on his body tightened with renewed ferocity, her fingers digging into his flesh like steel clamps, and Benjamin felt a surge of panic course through his veins.

He tried to punch her far away from himself immediately, desperate to create distance between them and escape her grasp, but his fist was caught by her hand with supernatural speed.

She twisted his arm in a messy, brutal manner, as if it were nothing more than a piece of fabric to be wrung out, and the bones cracked audibly before shooting out of the skin in grotesque, jagged shards while blood poured profusely from the wound.

The pain was excruciating, but before he could even react to it, her right arm immediately gripped his shoulder for support, her fingers pressing into his flesh with such force that they punctured through skin and muscle, shattering the bone there as well.

[Shit’s going to happen now...] [Ben]

Benjamin braced himself for something even more painful, his body tensing as he realized he had become effectively trapped in her grasp, even unable to teleport.

He saw Marina swing her head back, her eyes blazing with cold fury, indicating another—but devastating and life-changing—headbutt was about to be delivered.

One that would likely shatter his form and scatter his consciousness across the battlefield in ways even his regeneration might struggle to recover from.

TAP...

The sound was very soft and gentle, a stark contrast to the brutal violence that had dominated their encounter just moments before.

Benjamin felt the light pressure against his forehead, Marina’s skull making contact with his in a way that was entirely different from the devastating headbutt he had braced himself for.

There was no crushing force, no shattering impact, no explosion of pain that would scatter his consciousness across the battlefield.

Just a soft, almost affectionate press of skin against skin that left him completely disoriented.

[...Eh? I’m still in one piece?] Benjamin wondered after closing his eyes tightly and mentally preparing himself for the worst, bracing for the gruesome process of regenerating from a liquified state that he had been dreading.

Her auburn hair brushed against his face, with the faint scent of flowers.

"Among all the god-touched individuals I’ve encountered throughout my long life..." Marina muttered so softly that most would have missed it entirely. "...you’re the most unreasonable one I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting. Your persistence is frankly absurd, your regeneration is ridiculous, and your complete refusal to stay dead is very infuriating."

She released her grip on his twisted and ruined arm, letting it fall limply to his side like a discarded piece of broken machinery.

And like a fish desperately trying to get back into water after being thrown onto dry land, the arm began to flap and fidget erratically, bones shifting and realigning beneath the skin, muscles knitting themselves back together, flesh reconnecting and healing until the limb became completely normal once more.

The process was grotesque and fascinating in equal measure

"...".

"Uhm... Marina...?" Benjamin nervously called her name, his voice ringing with uncertainty since the silence between them was beginning to hurt in ways that the physical violence hadn’t.

As she raised her face up to meet his gaze, it was flushed a deep crimson, her cheeks burning with an intensity that rivaled the sunset beginning to paint the sky behind them, and her dark hazel eyes were dazed, unfocused, as if she were seeing him for the first time.

The fierce warrior goddess who had been raining down bone-shattering punches moments ago now looked somewhat vulnerable, almost uncertain, almost... shy.

"L-L-Look here..." she began, her voice far smaller than its normal commanding register, with a hesitance that seemed entirely alien especially coming from her lips.

She struggled to find the words, her gaze darting away from his face repeatedly as if she couldn’t bear to maintain eye contact.

"I am in love with Elara. I love her very much, with my heart and soul, and I wish she would love me in the same way as well. That has not changed and will never change, no matter what. But Benjamin, I must confess something to you that I have been trying to avoid admitting."

"Anything!" Benjamin who was just excited he didn’t have to go through the traumatic experience of being turned into liquid and having to regenerate from a puddle, answered her gallantly, his voice carrying an enthusiasm that was entirely disproportionate to the situation. "You can tell me absolutely anything at all! I’m all ears, I promise!"

Marina began to grind her thighs together restlessly, a nervous gesture that was completely out of character for the proud warrior queen, her eyes darting all over the scorched savannah as if searching for an escape from her own confession.

Her fingers twisted in the fabric of her gown, the torn slit revealing glimpses of the dark armor beneath, and she seemed to shrink into herself in a way that was very endearing.

After biting her lips for a long, uncertain moment, her teeth pressing into the soft flesh as she struggled to find the courage to continue, she finally spoke:
