Chapter 439: Two Furious Storms Not Ready to Admit Defeat
Marina shot upward through the new hole Benjamin had created, ascending through the village’s canopy to meet him in the open sky where their battle could truly unfold without restraint.
Deva was left standing alone in her ruined workshop, surrounded by the wreckage of her work, her finger absently finding its way to her mouth as she stared at the devastation in bewilderment.
"Please... both of you," she whispered to no one in particular, her voice sounding a note of weary resignation, "please don’t completely destroy the village because of your rough play. We simply don’t have the magical energy or materials to rebuild everything in a short amount of time."
Particularly because she didn’t want the entire village reduced to splintered rubble and terrified civilians, Marina had made a calculated decision during their clash:
She had forcefully slugged Benjamin out of the residential area with a devastating blow that sent him hurtling across the treeline like a comet, redirecting their battle far away from Verdant Spire’s more delicate infrastructure and into the untamed expanse of the Whispering Wilds.
From within the relative safety of Verdant Spire itself, the sounds of their conflict were nothing short of apocalyptic.
Explosions and crashes reverberated through the ancient trees like rolling thunder, each impact sending tremors through the ground that could be felt all the way to the village center.
The noise was unlike anything the residents had ever heard: it sounded like two furious storms were colliding and fighting for territorial dominance, their winds and lightning locked in a great struggle for supremacy.
Others swore it resembled two super dragons locked in a brutal, earth-shattering encounter, their roars and claws tearing at each other with primal ferocity.
The very ground shook and rumbled with each fresh impact, and shockwaves blasted outward in all directions, bending trees to unnatural angles and stripping leaves from their branches as if an invisible hurricane were passing through.
"What in the world is going on out there, Deva?" Elara’s voice sounded with a note of curiosity as she and Sakura approached the workshop from the palace, their elegant forms navigating the disturbed terrain with practiced grace.
They had walked a short distance from the palace grounds to the entrance of Deva’s tree-cavity workshop, their eyes fixed on the distant flashes of light and columns of smoke rising from the Wilds beyond.
"Ah, your Majesty!" Deva turned sharply at the sound of Elara’s voice, her small frame immediately dropping into a respectful kneel before the queen, her head bowed in proper deference.
But before she could properly complete the gesture, Elara’s gentle hand caught her arm and guided her back to her feet with characteristic warmth and informality.
"Uhm... I also don’t know the specific details of what’s happening out there, to be honest," Deva admitted, her bright green eyes shifting nervously toward the distant explosions. "But from what I can gather, sister seems to be playing rather aggressively with Sir Benjamin."
"Playing...?" Sakura raised a single elegant eyebrow at the question, her gaze fixed on the enormous white light that had just erupted on the horizon, accompanied by a crackling thunder that seemed to split the sky in two. "With the Mjornøx?"
The intensity of the blast was visible even from this distance, a stark reminder of the sheer power being thrown around out there.
Sakura added, tapping her folded fan on her cheek: "Are they not actively trying to kill each other? That doesn’t look like any form of play."
"Haha!" Elara’s laughter rang out bright as she watched the distant area where the battle seemed to be concentrated, her eyes sparkling with unexpected amusement at the situation.
The queen’s reaction was remarkably calm given the chaos unfolding beyond the village borders. "So Marina has finally decided to open up to someone other than me, has she? I must say, I never expected her to express herself through such... enthusiastic means, but as expected of Benjamin to draw this out of her."
"You’re not worried that they’re fighting each other so brutally?" Sakura asked, her voice ringing with puzzlement as she fell into step beside Elara, the two of them beginning to stroll away from the workshop with casual disinterest.
The distant explosions continued to punctuate the air behind them, but neither queen seemed particularly concerned.
"Marina would never fight anyone on impulse unless she had a compelling reason," Elara replied with a bright, knowing smile that suggested she understood far more than she was letting on. "Unless she was protecting me, or protecting the village, or some other matter of true importance. She’s far too disciplined and controlled to simply lash out without cause."
The queen paused, her smile widening slightly. "I had feared it might never happen, given how surprisingly eccentric Marina can be (once asking for a tongue kiss as a reward), but this is her way of finally recognizing Benjamin’s existence on a deeper level... I think."
"You think?" Sakura drooped her eyes in exaggerated disbelief and playfully pressed her weight against Elara’s side, her voice carrying a teasing lilt. "So you’re not even entirely certain about your own assessment? That’s not very reassuring, Your Majesty."
"See, when we’re outside the palace, could you please not be so clingy!" Elara whined in protest, attempting to push Sakura away with mock indignation, though a smile tugged at her lips despite her complaints. "I’m saying the people are watching!"
How cozy...
Meanwhile, back in the Whispering Wilds where the true carnage was unfolding, the battle had reached a fever pitch that would have killed any ordinary combatant a hundred times over.
Benjamin stood in the scorched clearing wearing only his lower garments now; his tunic had been reduced to tattered strips that hung uselessly from his frame, the fabric unable to withstand the punishment of their exchange.
His chest was bare to the elements, revealing the smooth, unblemished skin that had somehow survived everything Marina had thrown at him.
Marina stood some distance away from him, the Mjornøx clutched firmly in her right hand, the weapon crackling with an unstable mixture of dark and white energy that pulsed and flickered with each passing second.
The runes along its surface glowed with malevolent intensity, and the air around it seemed to warp and distort from the sheer power contained within its frame.
