Chapter 438: Love Is War... Literally II
"Hey, sister, what’s the big idea?! Crashing into my lair is a sin punishable by death by a thousand swords, you know! I have rules about this kind of thing! Do you have any idea how hard it is to get sawdust out of delicate mechanisms?"
Marina stood up from the rubble, wearing a dark and eerie smile as she brushed off dust and pieces of small wood from her body.
She looked too calm, too serene, despite the chaos that surrounded her.
Lines of blood dropped from her forehead where pieces of the red metallic item had shattered and mildly pierced her forehead.
The cuts were shallow but numerous, thin rivulets of red tracing paths down her face and neck.
"Deva, I need the weapon you constructed—the one you specifically designed for Lazarus during that period when he attempted to join the Tëhznarā fight." Marina’s voice rung with an edge of urgency as she stood up from the debris, her deep green eyes locking onto the smaller woman.
"...Eh...?" Deva’s angry expression instantly melted away, replaced by wide-eyed astonishment that made her look even more youthful than her petite frame already suggested.
Her bright green eyes blinked rapidly as she processed Marina’s request. "Who exactly does sister want to murder with such excessive force? Because that particular weapon isn’t exactly meant for gentle persuasion or diplomatic negotiations."
Without waiting for a response, Deva immediately spun around and began rummaging through a cluttered shelve that was crammed with various devices, weapons, and half-finished contraptions that had accumulated over centuries of obsessive tinkering.
Her small hands moved with practiced efficiency, pushing aside lesser items until her fingers finally closed around something particularly weighty and substantial that had been resting at the very back, hidden behind layers of dust and forgotten projects.
"This is the Mjornøx," Deva announced as she strained to lift the weapon, which was roughly the same size as her entire body, her voice sounding with pride and warning as she raised it high enough for Marina to see in full detail.
The weapon was an intricately designed masterpiece of dwarven-inspired craftsmanship, featuring a devastating hammer head on one side that could shatter fortress walls, and a razor-sharp axe blade on the opposite side that could cleave through enchanted armor like butter.
The entire surface was etched with glowing runes that pulsed with contained energy, occasionally sputtering and flickering in ways that suggested the weapon was perpetually on the verge of catastrophic failure.
"It’s technically classified as a god-class item, though it was ultimately rejected from proper divine categorization due to certain... instabilities that I’ve never quite managed to resolve." Deva continued, "Make no mistake, however—it remains extraordinarily dangerous, and despite my best efforts over several millennia, I haven’t managed to stabilize its volatile power output to anything resembling safe parameters. If you don’t take the time to properly stabilize it yourself before using it, you might very well end up killing whoever you’re aiming at—and possibly several people in the immediate vicinity as well."
"Alright then. I won’t stabilize it at all," Marina responded with absolute finality, her voice ringing with no hesitation whatsoever as she reached forward and firmly grasped the weapon’s handle, pulling it from Deva’s grip with ease despite its size.
She hefted it experimentally, testing its weight and balance, her expression darkening with grim satisfaction as she felt the raw, chaotic power humming through its metallic frame.
"Huh?! I explicitly said you should stabilize it, or else someone is going to die!" Deva’s voice pitched upward in alarm, her hands flailing desperately as she watched Marina handle the unstable weapon with alarming casualness. "I wasn’t making a suggestion, sister! The energy fluctuations alone could—"
Just then, Benjamin appeared in the doorway, his form silhouetted against the morning light filtering through the entrance behind him.
His expression was unusually contrite, his blue eyes holding an apology that seemed real despite the chaos he had just caused moments earlier.
"Marina, I’m really sorry for what happened back there—I truly don’t know what came over me. That red metallic material on your forehead seemed to affect me strangely, getting under my skin and clouding my judgment in ways I still don’t fully understand, and before I could properly control myself, I just completely snapped and—"
"Benjamin." Marina’s voice cut through his rambling apology like a blade through silk, cold, sharp, and devoid of warmth.
"Y-Yes?" Benjamin responded nervously, his confident posture faltering slightly as he registered the dangerous glint in Marina’s eyes and the massive weapon now resting in her grip.
"Die!!"
Without another moment’s hesitation, Marina planted her feet firmly, twisted her torso with practiced precision, and launched the Mjornøx directly at Benjamin with devastating force.
The weapon spun through the air, trailing arcs of unstable magical energy that crackled and sparked with each rotation.
It connected squarely with Benjamin’s abdomen with a sickening thud, the impact so powerful that it lifted him completely off his feet and sent him hurtling backward through the workshop entrance at impossible speeds.
He crashed through multiple trees along the village’s perimeter, each collision producing thunderous cracks as ancient trunks splintered and gave way, before the weapon’s trajectory tilted upward and carried him clear out of the forest entirely, launching him into the open sky like a discarded projectile.
The last glimpse anyone caught of Benjamin was his rapidly shrinking form disappearing into the clouds, the Mjornøx still embedded against his chest as they both vanished from sight.
"Oh... If it’s Benjamin who’s the intended target, then I suppose it’s completely fine," Deva said with a casual shrug, her earlier panic evaporating as she placed her hand flat against her forehead and watched the distant speck fade into nothingness.
Her voice carried a clinical interest now, as if she were observing a particularly fascinating experiment rather than a potential murder.
"Actually, now that I think about it, you should absolutely use this opportunity to kill him repeatedly—every time he inevitably recovers and comes back—and make sure to bring me all the resulting combat data for analysis. I’ve been dying to understand the limits of his regeneration capabilities, and this would provide invaluable research material."
"Indeed. That seems like a perfectly reasonable course of action to explain to Her Majesty. Though I have to say, given the force of that impact and the unstable nature of the Mjornøx, he might not actually wake up again to provide any—"
"Sister!!"
Before Deva could even complete her sentence or process what was happening, Benjamin had somehow reappeared directly above them.
He was gripping the Mjornøx firmly in both hands now, having taken the weapon during his flight, and he was swinging it downward, the axe blade aimed squarely at Marina’s unprotected head with devastating precision.
Marina reacted with reflexes honed over millennia of combat, her palms coming together in a desperate clasp just in time to catch the sharp vertical axe blade between her hands, halting its descent mere inches from her skull.
The impact sent shockwaves rippling through the workshop, the sheer force of the collision causing even Deva to stumble backward and lose her footing, her small form sprawling against a workbench as loose tools clattered to the floor around her.
"Oh...? A... Are you absolutely certain about this course of action, B-Benjamin...?" Marina asked through gritted teeth, her arms visibly trembling from the strain of holding back the axe blade.
Her muscles bulged with effort, veins standing out along her forearms as she struggled to maintain her defensive position against the overwhelming pressure of Benjamin’s attack.
"No... I’m not certain about anything anymore, to be completely honest," Benjamin admitted, a determined smirk spreading across his face despite the obvious exertion visible in his own arms.
His muscles quaked from the force he was applying to the weapon, sweat beading on his brow as he pushed downward m. "I just know that I absolutely refuse to lose to you today, no matter what it takes. Give up and apologize for hitting me first, and perhaps I’ll consider calming down and having a civil conversation about everything that’s happened between us."
Marina’s eyes narrowed dangerously at his ultimatum, and with a swift, skillful motion, she swung her hands violently leftward, redirecting Benjamin’s downward momentum and causing the massive weapon to strike the ground beside her.
The impact cracked the stone floor open, deep fissures spreading outward like spiderwebs across the workshop’s surface as the ground groaned under the assault.
Taking advantage of his momentary imbalance, Marina’s elbow—reinforced with concentrated magical energy that made it glow with an ethereal light—connected with Benjamin’s jaw in a perfectly calculated strike.
The force of the blow was so immense that it visibly vibrated the air around them, creating a visible shockwave that rippled outward and disturbed the dust motes floating in the morning light.
Benjamin’s head snapped back violently, and his body was once again launched out of the workshop, crashing through the remaining intact portions of the ceiling and sailing off into the village beyond.
Marina wasted no time.
She reached down, grabbed the fallen Mjornøx with practiced ease, and twirled it around her body in a display of expert weapon handling that would have impressed even the most skilled warriors.
She rested its weight on her shoulder, feeling the chaotic energy thrumming against her skin, a dark smile curling at the corners of her lips.
"Very well, god-touched... It’s been ages since I last went all out like this," she murmured softly, her voice brimming with nostalgic excitement as she felt the familiar thrill of imminent combat coursing through her veins.
Her legs spread wide into a combat stance, and visible veins gathered along her legs as she prepared for explosive movement.
Without warning, she leaped with such devastating force that the ground beneath her feet fractured and cratered, sending Deva stumbling backward once again.
Marina shot upward through the new hole Benjamin had created, ascending through the village’s canopy to meet him in the open sky where their battle could truly unfold without restraint.
Deva was left standing alone in her ruined workshop, surrounded by the wreckage of her work, her finger absently finding its way to her mouth as she stared at the devastation in bewilderment.
"Please... both of you," she whispered to no one in particular, her voice sounding a note of weary resignation, "please don’t completely destroy the village because of your rough play. We simply don’t have the magical energy or materials to rebuild everything in a short amount of time."
