Chapter 120: Chapter 78: "Boom!
"Mr. Sabeck, the prey has left its cage."
At Grey Bird Logistics Company, Sean had just left Alola Town when Sabeck received a call from his subordinate.
"Good. I’ve been waiting for you, Mr. Sean." Sabeck, sitting at his desk, shot up from his chair with the receiver in hand, a sharp glint in his eyes.
It had been a long time since he’d last gone on a hunt. The pay for this job was generous—a bounty posted personally by a major figure in the Florist Family. One good score and he could take a year off.
The thought of the good times ahead—sunshine, beaches, waves, beautiful women, and a cactus—made the corners of Sabeck’s mouth curl up. Don’t ask why there’d be a cactus at the beach. Of course, it was *his palm*—perfect for spanking beauties and making waves.
Come to think of it, he hadn’t taken a vacation in two or three years. Sabeck was really looking forward to it.
Until he asked, "Who’s he with?"
Sean was an adventurous type—the more dangerous things got, the more excited he became. But seeking thrills didn’t mean he was reckless. Sabeck had read Sean’s file; quite a few Witch Hunters had fallen at his hands. This showed that Sean wasn’t what he seemed. He appeared bold and brash, but was actually cautious and meticulous. A man like that wouldn’t leave Alola Town without bodyguards.
Thoroughly understanding their target’s current situation and strength was mandatory homework before they made a move.
Sabeck knew Sean might be setting a trap, but that was a game two could play.
’Who isn’t a strategist these days?’
And so, Sabeck listened to a long string of names.
"Flame Crow, Elise, a Light Attendant, a Dream Builder, a Witch... including Sean, that’s a known total of eight people," his subordinate replied.
Sabeck’s smile slowly froze, and a question mark seemed to appear over his head. "?"
That many??
"Are you sure you didn’t get it wrong?"
"...No." This mission was too important; he’d been more careful than usual. There was no mistake. There were at least seven people traveling with Sean, with an average Tier of 4.5, and it was possible others might join them along the way.
Sabeck: "..."
In that instant, not only did his upturned lips freeze, but the light in his eyes vanished. He could almost see his dream of sunshine, beaches, and waves receding into the distance, from within arm’s reach to impossibly far away.
’No, wait, why so many people??’
Sabeck yanked open his drawer with a BANG, pulled out Sean’s file, and slammed it on the desk.
"Isn’t this guy Tier One?"
"Tier Two at most."
"Where did he get the connections to hire so many Tier Fives??"
Sabeck didn’t understand.
’A Tier Two Wizard is still in the "newbie" category, maybe not even able to block a bullet. In the eyes of big shots at Tier Five or higher, they’re complete rookies—the kind of person who’d be completely ignored in the Void Technique Space Plaza. They look down on such Little Wizards, so how could they possibly agree to be his bodyguard?’
’If it were just Flame Crow and Elise, it would make sense. After all, Sean has always been close with them. The two women are probably lusting after his good looks and made some sort of secret deal to protect him for a while.’
’But what about the Dream Builder, the Light Attendant, and the Witch?’
’One is a high-level manager in the Long Night Union, one is the boss of several companies, and another is a rather famous Alchemy Master. These are all important people. Don’t they have their own business to attend to?’
His subordinate suggested tentatively, "Maybe they’re just heading the same way?"
"Same way my ass!" Sabeck’s good mood vanished, and he cursed, "How many times have I told you? There are no coincidences in this world!"
’If they’re on the same plane, they’re definitely together.’
’Even if you notice fewer people halfway through, like someone has left the group, you absolutely must not believe it.’
’Tier Five Wizards know more Magic Spells than you can count—Invisibility, Disguise, Transformation... not to mention there’s an Alchemist among them. Their tracks are already hard to follow, and if they down a Witch Potion, who would be able to recognize them?’
’You think they’re gone, you bravely make your move, and then you discover that they were all waiting for you right there, having never left at all.’
This damned romantic notion was a lesson Sabeck had once bought with his own blood and tears.
"So... are we still going?" his subordinate asked cautiously.
Based on his understanding of Mr. Sabeck, if a mission’s difficulty exceeded expectations, he would most likely choose to give up.
But who would have thought that this time, Sabeck would make a completely different decision: "We go!"
"Why wouldn’t we?"
He wasn’t about to be scared just because they had numbers.
’Sean can call for backup, but can’t I do the same?’
’Grey Bird Logistics isn’t the only company that wants to trade Sean’s head for cash. There are plenty of people who want to use this opportunity to prove themselves and climb the ladder within the Florist Family.’
’And once they leave Siracle State, there will be Witch Hunters from other families, too.’
"If I remember correctly, they’re headed to New Eldo?" Sabeck asked.
His subordinate nodded. "That’s right."
They had people in the airline and had already confirmed Sean’s flight path: a direct flight from Kendili City International Airport, near Alola Town, to New Elderidge, all under false identities.
"All the more reason for us to go," Sabeck said meaningfully.
What was New Elderidge?
It wasn’t just the most prosperous metropolis in the world, located in the very center of the continent; it was also the political heart of the entire Empire.
Many people thought that the cities and their citizens were managed by the various state governments, and that those governments were in turn managed by the ancient, noble families. They believed the true masters of this world were those great families with their vast capital. But in reality, behind those families was an even more terrifying power.
