Chapter 243: Chapter 243: The Broken Doll
"I am not leaving without seeing Aria," said Alexander, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rasp that vibrated through the ruined foyer. "Where is she?"
The residual combat potions in his bloodstream were mutating his panic into a dark, suffocating obsession. In his warped mind, Aria belonged to him, and these people were trying to steal her away, hide her, or lock her up. The dark fog in his brain was so thick that he wouldn’t hesitate to wrap his hands around Evelyn’s throat and choke the life out of her just to find her.
"Tell him to come up," said a faint, strained voice from the top of the stairs.
Alexander snapped his head toward the upper landing, his bloodshot eyes tracking the sound.
Mrs. Gable stepped aside, her face tight with a bitter, defeated glare. Alexander blew past her like a shadow, taking the steps three at a time until he reached the heavy mahogany doors of the master bedroom. He stopped, his trembling hand resting against the wood.
"Can I come in?" asked Alexander, his voice suddenly cracking.
"Isn’t it ridiculous for you to ask that after what you just did downstairs?" asked Aria from the other side.
Alexander pushed the door open and stepped into the dim room. The moment his eyes locked onto the bed, his heart stopped dead in his chest, a brutal shock slamming into his nervous system.
Aria was mutilated. Her body was a shattered wreck bandaged from head to toe like a tragic modern mummy, with tubes and monitors tracking her weak vitals. Seeing her beautiful form reduced to a broken doll, Alexander’s knees buckled. He collapsed onto the floor, tears bursting from his eyes as he slapped a hand over his mouth to choke back a violent sob.
"No... it’s not possible... no, no, no...!!!" roared Alexander, his mind collapsing into chaos under the weight of pure guilt.
He lunged backward, slamming his bare fists into the bedroom wall over and over again until the drywall shattered and his knuckles bled. He cracked his forehead against the stone molding, the physical pain doing nothing to drown out the suffocating impotence tearing his soul apart. He had failed. He hadn’t protected her.
Wiping the blood and tears from his face, Alexander crawled on his knees until he was right beside her mattress, staring at her wrapped face with wide, manic eyes.
"Who did this?" asked Alexander, his body shaking as a cold, murderous wrath replaced his sorrow. "Who the hell did this to you...!!!"
Alexander stared at her, his mind reeling as he struggled to process the sheer cruelty inflicted upon Aria. The elegant, plump, and cheerful woman he loved to flirt with—the one he desired to dominate and claim had been reduced to this broken, bandaged mass of pain.
His rationality was gone, swallowed by a dark, chaotic vortex of vengeance.
"It was the Sinclairs, wasn’t it?" asked Alexander, his teeth grinding together as his eyes flared with murderous intent. "It was them! They were going to do the exact same thing to Victoria, which is why her father smuggled her out of the country, right?! It was those miserable sons of bitches...!!! Aghhh! I’m going to slaughter them all! I won’t leave a single one of them alive!"
"It wasn’t them," said Aria, her voice a weak, muffled rasp behind the heavy gauze wrapping her face. "It was Senator Goebbels. I don’t know... I don’t know why he wanted me dead."
"Why did he have to be so cruel to you?!" shouted Alexander, his fists clenching so hard his freshly cut knuckles began to bleed again.
"He wanted me to tell him something," whispered Aria, her heart monitor spiking with weak, erratic beats.
"What thing?" asked Alexander.
Aria didn’t answer, her silence stretching across the dim bedroom.
"Forgive me," said Alexander, shaking his head. "I shouldn’t have asked."
Hearing the name Gobbels hit Alexander like a bucket of ice water freezing the manic frenzy in his veins. The missing pieces of the puzzle suddenly locked into place. He remembered the day of the rescue—when the extraction helicopter arrived, the guards had blocked him from getting close to the girls. They had found them in a horrific, unmentionable state. In a fit of unbridled rage, Joseph Kingsley had personally executed the Secretary of Security on the spot, before tracking Senator Goebbels all the way to his private jet as he attempted to flee the country, vaporizing the aircraft out of the sky with a ballistic missile.
Alexander slumped against the side of the bed defeated. The man responsible for this atrocity was already ash. He had nowhere to direct his burning wrath, and Aria was still left here, shattered and broken.
"What can I do to..." started Alexander, his eyes suddenly widening as a desperate spark of hope flashed in his mind. "Wait! TMC! They can do it! Their medical tech can save you and cure your body! Wait right here!"
He pulled his phone from his pocket, his trembling fingers hovering over the screen.
"They won’t cure her," said Mrs. Gable, stepping into the bedroom doorway, her voice hollow and dead. "Don’t bother. I already tried to contact them."
"What do you mean they won’t cure her?!" asked Alexander, spinning around to face her, his voice cracking with desperation. "That’s impossible. They cured me of severe, life-threatening injuries in less than a single day! Why wouldn’t they do the same for Aria?!"
"Because they won’t," said a deep, familiar male voice from the hallway.
Alexander snapped his head toward the door as Marcus stepped into the dim bedroom, his expression heavy and grim. Alexander’s eyes narrowed a dangerous spark of betrayal flaring in his chest.
"You knew about this?" asked Alexander, his fists clenching as he stepped away from the bed. "You knew and you didn’t goddamn tell me?!"
"I didn’t know, Alexander. I just found out," said Marcus, raising his hands to de-escalate the tension. "Mrs. Gable called me a few minutes ago to stop you from doing something stupid, so I drove over here as fast as I could to contain you. But it looks like you’ve already calmed down a bit."
"Thanks for coming," said Alexander, rubbing his face as he let out a long, ragged breath. "But tell me. Why won’t TMC cure her? They have the technology."
Marcus looked over at the broken, bandaged form of Aria, then back to Alexander, his gaze turning deadly serious.
"This has everything to do with the deeper layers of the organization we are involved in," said Marcus, gesturing toward the door. "Do you want to go for a drive? There are things about this situation that are better if nobody else in this room hears, or things could get a hell of a lot worse than they already are."
