Chapter 244: Chapter 244: The Underground Secret
Alexander turned back to the bed, looking down at Aria’s wrapped form with a heavy, conflicted gaze.
"I’m sorry," said Alexander, his voice a low whisper. "I’ll be back in just a moment."
He turned on his heel and walked out of the room with Marcus. As they descended the grand staircase, Alexander could see the remaining guards shifting nervously, their eyes locked onto him with pure dread. He looked at the shattered front doors, the cracked marble, and the pools of blood staining the luxury foyer.
"This is fucked up," said Alexander, rubbing his temples as a wave of exhaustion hit him. "I don’t even know what’s happening to me anymore. I don’t even remember how I broke in. I just know that I took out anyone who stood in my way."
"Follow me," said Marcus, his expression unreadable as he led the way out to the driveway.
They walked past the ruined security gate toward Marcus’s matte-black Hellcat. Both men got inside, and Marcus fired up the roaring V8 engine, tearing away from the Gable estate. He drove in silence for nearly half an hour, weaving through the city until they reached the dark, industrial docks of the shipyard. Marcus navigated the vehicle between rows of massive, rusted shipping containers and towering warehouses, finally pulling up to one specific, unmarked building.
They got out of the car. Marcus walked up to a heavy steel door, pulling out a black magnetic ID card and swiping it across a hidden scanner. With a heavy click, the lock disengaged, and as they stepped inside, the overhead high-bay floodlights flickered to life one by one, illuminating the massive structure.
"What the hell is this place?" asked Alexander, his eyes scanning the empty, echoing floor.
"My workshop," said Marcus, a faint, proud smirk on his face. "Do you like it?"
"A workshop for what?" asked Alexander, frowning. "There’s nothing here."
"Come on," said Marcus, gesturing toward a heavy metal staircase tucked away in the back corner.
They walked over and began descending into the subterranean level. The moment they reached the bottom, Alexander froze. The underground floor was just as cavernous as the warehouse above, but unlike the empty upper tier, this space was alive with activity. Dozens of people dressed in sterile white hazmat suits were working at heavy stainless-steel tables, surrounded by complex laboratory equipment and bubbling chemical vats.
"What the actual fuck...?" muttered Alexander, his tactical instincts flaring.
"This place is my highest secret," said Marcus, walking past the rows of workers without pausing. "The mere fact that you are standing here right now means you have a massive target on your back. Actually, you already had one anyway, which is exactly why I brought you here. Follow me to my office."
They walked past the busy workstations and entered a soundproof double door at the far end. The office inside was spacious and luxurious, lined with dark leather couches, a massive mahogany desk, and a fully stocked bar.
"Want a cigar?" asked Marcus, opening a wooden humidor on his desk.
He offered Alexander a premium cigar and reached for a crystal decanter to pour a drink.
"I’ll take a soda," said Alexander, shaking his head heavily. "I really don’t want to touch any alcohol right now."
"Here, have a diet one," said Marcus, tossing a cold can across the room with a smirk. "We wouldn’t want you gaining any weight, haha."
Under normal circumstances, Alexander would have snapped back with a sharp ’fuck you’, but this time he remained silent, sitting heavily on the leather couch, his intrigued eyes tracking Marcus’s every move.
"Do you actually know what TMC stands for?" asked Marcus, leaning against the edge of his desk as he lit his cigar.
"No idea," said Alexander, popping open the soda can. "I’ve always wondered about it, honestly."
"Nobody actually knows," said Marcus, blowing a thick cloud of smoke toward the ceiling. "And nobody has any clue who the real leader of this whole thing is either. Think about it, Alexander. You’ve been in this place for less than two months. You’ve barely trained a handful of times with Stephen, and yet you’re already functioning like some kind of terrifying supersoldier. Have you actually noticed that?"
"Yeah..." said Alexander, his brow furrowing as he took a sip. "What exactly are you getting at?"
"I trained for several months before you even showed up, and I still go to the facility regularly," said Marcus, his eyes locking onto Alexander’s with a cold, unyielding intensity. "It would be weird if I didn’t. And trust me when I say this—even with your little berserker mode, I could crush your skull against the concrete floor without breaking a single sweat. And I am not jactancing."
Alexander felt a sharp, sudden sting of irritation in his chest, his pride flaring up as if he were being openly belittled.
"Take it easy, kid, don’t jump up. There’s no need for that," said Marcus, waving his hand dismissively before Alexander could even leave the couch. "The point I’m trying to make is this: if we become this powerful with so little training time, where the hell are all the veteran agents? Why hasn’t TMC taken control of the entire world? Why can people like Big Black just run around doing whatever the hell they want?"
"I’m not trying to underestimate him," said Alexander, leaning forward as he carefully weighed his words. "But I’m pretty sure I could crack Big Black’s face open right now. Out of everyone in the city, the only one who genuinely scares the shit out of me is Stephen. That guy is just... strange. I wouldn’t even know how to properly explain it to you, but I would never want to face him in a fight. I get the distinct impression that the man is bulletproof."
"He is bulletproof," said Marcus, taking a slow drag from his cigar before looking back at Alexander with a look that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "Alexander, do you actually believe there is life outside of Earth, or do you think we are the only living beings in this vast universe?"
