Chapter 9: The promise

"Shashe, call the doctor—now!"

The old lady’s voice cracked with panic.

Kathe wasn’t breathing.

Jark’s hands were trembling as bad memories clicked in him, part of his trauma. He couldn’t think straight for a moment before it clicked to him that Kathe was still unconscious, and he quickly began to perform CPR on her, and pressed his palms to her chest. One. Two. Three. Nothing. Her heartbeat was slipping away. He quickly performed mouth-to-mouth, but she didn’t show any sign of waking up.

Rhea stood beside the old lady, faking concern, but she was really happy and wished that Kathe should not wake up again, cause Kathe was the only thing in the way of her and Jark.

Shashe returned, putting the phone down from her ear. "Mom has called the doctor, he will be here soon," she told the old lady. The old lady just nodded at her, but her eyes never left Kathe and Jark.

"Please wake up, please wake up," Jark murmured, his voice trembling as he performed CPR on her again. Some of the guests began to murmur and wanted to make videos and take pictures, but the guards got them under control.

Cough! Cough! Cough!

Kathe coughed out a large sum of water from her mouth. Her eyes barely opened as she gasped for air. A sudden relief came to Jark when she regained consciousness, but the relief was short-lived, cause Kathe was barely keeping herself conscious.

"Stay with me, keep your eyes open please," Jark gave her light taps on her cheeks as he whispered.

"She’s cold," he murmured to himself as he quickly carried Kathe up in bridal style. The crowd quickly cleared space for him. As he was walking past the old lady, Kathe opened her eyes and stared at Rhea, who was also staring at her too, before she went unconscious again.

The moment Kathe’s eyes met Rhea’s, Rhea began to panic, scared that she would get exposed. Her only wish was for Kathe to die inside that pool so that she could have Jark to herself, but it seemed like luck wasn’t on her side. She had overheard Kathe’s conversation with Jark. She was sure that no one was going to be able to save Kathe.

"What are you thinking about? Come, let’s go inside," the old lady’s words brought her back to reality.

"Nothing, grandma, let’s go." She supported the old lady and hurried after Jark.

"The party is over, you all can go now please," Shashe spoke to the guests and media, as some of them left in disappointment.

"She will wake up soon in a few minutes," the doctor explained to Jark, most especially the old lady. She was clearly worried.

"I don’t understand how this happened, how did she get inside the pool?" the old lady whispered, but it was loud enough for Jark to hear.

"I don’t know grandma, I was with her for a moment at the pool before I left," Jark replied to the old lady, also in confusion.

"The question shouldn’t be how she got in the pool, the question that you should be asking is, can’t she swim?" Shashe said clearly annoyed as she walked inside the room after seeing all the guests off.

"She can’t swim," Jark replied to her, but his eyes still focused on Kathe.

Shashe snorted at his response before adding, "Which family is she from that she can’t swim? Even dogs can swim."

"Mother." Jark wasn’t pleased with Shashe’s response. She rolled her eyes at him.

"She is waking up," the doctor announced to them as he went back to Kathe’s side, checking her pulse.

"Kathe," the old lady rushed over to her.

"Grandma, be careful," Jark quickly steadied the old lady who was about to fall out of excitement.

"How are you feeling?" the doctor asked Kathe after she finally opened her eyes.

"I’m fine," Kathe replied weakly, her eyes meeting the old lady’s. Her reply was mainly to calm the old lady down.

"Kathe, my dear, how did you get into the pool when you knew that you can’t swim?" the old lady asked carefully after making sure that Kathe was stable enough to speak and also after getting the doctor’s approval. Even Jark was curious about Kathe’s answer. Shashe acted unbothered. The only person scared to death was Rhea. She tried to hide behind Shashe. She wished that the ground could open up at that moment.

"Yes, Kathe, how did you get in the pool? I remembered clearly that you told me you can’t swim, so why did you get inside?" Jark urged her, his hands still holding onto hers.

Kathe’s eyes drifted to Rhea and stopped for a brief second, making everyone turn to Rhea.

"I don’t remember who it was clearly, but I remembered being pushed inside the pool. I can’t remember the face, it’s blurring," Kathe replied, holding her head in pain.

’Who would dare try to kill Kathe inside the mansion?’ Jark thought to himself as he was trying to remember all the guests’ faces.

"A murder was about to be committed inside the mansion," the old lady’s voice was filled with anger.

"You said you were pushed. I don’t understand how you can’t remember who pushed you," Shashe asked as she narrowed her eyes at Kathe.

"It’s normal for her not to remember. That’s due to lack of oxygen for a long time. It happens most times due to shock, making a person forget about a particular scene, and I will urge you all not to force her to remember anything for now," the doctor explained to everyone, mostly to Shashe, clearly getting her doubts.

"I will make sure the person who tried to kill you will pay with his or her life," Jark’s voice was filled with traces of anger, making Kathe face him.

"Will you really get justice for me?" she asked weakly.

"Yes, I will," Jark reassured her.

"Are you sure you will, no matter who it is, that you will get me justice?" Kathe asked again, her eyes drifting to Rhea before looking back at Jark.

"I will, I promise," Jark reassured again.

Rhea quickly dashed out of the room. Her palms were already sweating out of fear. She clearly wondered why Kathe didn’t expose her there, or if it was really true that she didn’t remember anything, but the way Kathe had looked at her started something else.
