Chapter 8: Rhea’s murder attempt 1

"I’ve never seen her before. I must say that this family is blessed with beauties," one of the young men said, his eyes already lusting after Kathe.

Kathe walked down slow and steady, the old lady smiling, her eyes shining with joy.

Jark walked toward the stairs with a smile on his face, shocking everyone, especially the young men who were staring at Kathe with lust in their eyes. The moment Kathe sighted him, she gave a soft smile to him, melting the world around her. Even the ladies couldn’t help but admire Kathe’s beauty.

When she reached the last stair, Jark took her hand and kissed her knuckles, his eyes still on her, his cold lips sending shivers down her spine.

"And that is my granddaughter-in-law," the old lady introduced Kathe to everyone, her voice filled with great pride. All those who had mistaken Rhea for the bride felt embarrassed, looking at Rhea with disgust. They all rushed to greet Kathe and fawn around her. Rhea’s heart was filled with bitterness. She was used to getting the praise. Though Shashe does not like Kathe, she was glad that Kathe was a beauty, making her women’s circle praise her for having such a daughter-in-law.

The banquet began. Jark left her with the young ladies to go discuss business with some of his business partners.

The young ladies were only gossiping about the latest things, making Kathe bored. She quietly excused herself as she walked out. Two people caught her walking out from the banquet hall; one of them was Jark, cause his eyes never left her.

Kathe strolled slowly by the poolside, lights reflecting inside the pool, making it beautiful. Kathe walked close to the pool but kept her distance, avoiding the water.

"Enjoying the view?" Without turning her face, Kathe knew that it was Jark.

"The pool is beautiful," she replied to him.

Jark walked close to her, took off his suit, and covered her with it. "It’s cold out here," he said as he placed the suit around her.

"Thank you." Kathe thanked him as she hugged the suit close to herself, his sweet scent filling her nose.

They stayed silent for some moments before Jark broke the silence again. "Are you scared of the pool?"

Kathe was surprised and turned to face Jark. "How did you know?"

He smiled at her before replying, "Your distance. You seem to admire the pool from a distance but not get close to it." His reply made sense.

"I can’t swim. Not just that, I have a phobia when it comes to too much water, ever since I was little," she replied to him with a smile.

Her words sparked some curiosity within Jark. "Have you been involved in an accident before or close to the water?" he asked her, his eyes expecting an answer.

"No, I haven’t, as far as I remember. And why did you ask?" Kathe replied after racking her brain to remember, but that was not the answer Jark expected.

"It’s just that you look like someone I once met when....." He was interrupted by someone’s voice.

"Hey, there you are, Jark." One of Jark’s partners rushed towards them. "I’m so sorry to interrupt, but I will steal your precious husband from you for a moment."

Kathe laughed it off. "It’s okay, you can take him away. I don’t need him for now." Kathe teased Jark, making him raise his eyebrow at her.

"Thank you very much," the man thanked Kathe with a smile. He was about to drag Jark away when Jark stopped him and walked close to Kathe and whispered to her, making it a little loud for the man’s hearing, "Take care of yourself, babe. I will be back soon." He leaned in and kissed her cheek, which caught Kathe by surprise. He smirked at her and left with the man. Everything was supposed to be fake, but she didn’t know why her feelings were developing.

While Kathe was still staring at the pool with her hand placed on the spot that Jark kissed, lost in her dream world, someone stepped out from the shadows and walked close to Kathe. Kathe felt a presence behind her with the thought that it was Jark that came back.

"Are you here to collect your suit back?" she asked with a teasing smile on her face. She didn’t hear any response, so she turned around, and it turned out to be Rhea. "Oh, it’s you." She was about to turn back to stare at the pool when Rhea suddenly rushed and pushed her into the pool. Kathe wasn’t even prepared. The moment she was pushed in, her eyes widened in surprise, filled with terror.

"Someone help!"

The moment she began shouting, Rhea ran away. The only name that came to Kathe’s mind was, "Jark, please help me!" as she struggled to keep herself conscious in the water, but the water was overpowering her.

The banquet was ongoing when one of the ladies ran inside screaming, "Someone has drowned in the pool!" The moment she screamed those words out, Jark’s eyes drifted around the hall but could not spot Kathe, and he remembered that she was beside the pool and she can’t swim.

He ran out of the hall immediately. When everyone saw him rushing out, they all followed behind, including the old lady, supported by Rhea.

Jark ran close to the pool and saw his suit floating on top of the water. Immediately, his heart stopped beating for some moments. He quickly rushed inside the pool, diving like an expert. Thanks to the light under the pool, he saw Kathe down in the pool. He quickly dived down and took Kathe out of the pool, keeping her on the floor beside the pool. The old lady’s knees went weak the moment she saw the person that had drowned in the pool, thanks to Shashe and Rhea, who quickly supported her.

"I can’t feel her pulse. She isn’t breathing," Jark spoke after checking on Kathe repeatedly.
