Chapter 108: Chain Quests

"What’s the eligibility criteria?" Vlad asked, folding his arms across his chest. He needed to know exactly what level he would need to reach to attempt an S-Ranked mission. He did not want to make any empty promises he could not keep.

"Oh, there is not much," Seraphina answered as she began explaining, her pink eyes gleaming with barely contained excitement. "To join an S-Ranked quest, you need to be a Sentinel Knight and must have completed a hundred A-Ranked quests, or ten A-Ranked quests and attained a place in the top ten of the Arena Ranking."

Vlad was still processing the information when she continued, "To attempt an A-Ranked quest, you must either clear a hundred B-Ranked quests, or ten B-Ranked quests and attain a place in the top fifty of the Arena Ranking."

She leaned forward on the table, her words coming faster and faster in her growing excitement. "As for B-Ranked quests themselves, only students from the second semester can attempt them. But there is an exception. The Crownbearer with a grade of at least Squire can also attempt them."

"Hey-hey! Slow down," Vlad gasped, shaking his hands in surrender.

"Ahem, I got ahead of myself," Seraphina finally calmed down, feeling a bit embarrassed about how she had lost her composure.

Now that Vlad had a moment to think clearly, he processed all the requirements carefully.

After a few seconds of contemplation, he said in a serious tone, "To conclude, you want me to reach the top ten in the Arena Ranking, finish ten B-Ranked quests, ten A-Ranked quests, and achieve the grade of Sentinel Knight."

"Yes," Seraphina nodded, her expressions carefully neutral.

"All that within fifty-nine days?"

"Twenty-nine days to be exact," Seraphina corrected him. "The only other eligible party that can accept this quest is currently out on a different mission. They will return in a month, so you need to become eligible before tha—"

"Like hell I can!" Vlad scoffed, finding her words utterly illogical. "Don’t you know already? I am D-Ranked. Only reaching Squire grade is far-fetched for me."

Seraphina did not reply. She looked at Vlad silently, her neutral face carrying a hint of disappointment that stung more than any harsh words could.

"You may leave now," she said, taking a deep, steadying breath.

"H-huh? You agreed rather easily," Vlad said, a bit taken aback. Although he did want to join this quest, the requirements were clearly impossible for someone of his level. For someone with D-Ranked talent, it would take over a year just to reach Squire Grade. Even with the System’s help, the gap was simply too wide to be covered.

He was about to rise from the chair when Seraphina muttered in a low tone, her eyebrows furrowed in annoyance, "There is no point in convincing someone who has already placed limits on themselves."

Her words struck Vlad like a bolt of lightning, freezing him mid-motion on the chair. When had he become so pathetic as to give up before even trying? Was he really trying to avoid making a promise he might not be able to fulfill, or had he subconsciously started limiting himself after being labelled D-Ranked?

He settled back on the chair and struck his cheeks sharply between both hands, the sound echoing through the room like a sudden, stinging slap.

"Wh-what was that? You startled me," Seraphina gasped, taken aback by his sudden action.

"I’m sorry, Sera, for showing such a pathetic sight," Vlad said, running his hand through his hair. "Tell Lord Cendral that Vlad agreed to join you on the mission."

The frown slowly disappeared from Seraphina’s face, replaced by a bright, blooming smile that lit up her features.

She jumped off from her chair, leaned forward across the table, and grabbed both of Vlad’s hands. "You cannot go back on your words."

"I-I won’t," Vlad mumbled, his eyes turning sideways as he felt the warmth of her palms pressing against his.

"Yay~ and you need not worry about yourself," Seraphina continued, her voice turning teasing. "I will protect my errand boy on the mission."

"Ha-haha, I’m already feeling quite safe," Vlad replied, sarcasm dripping clear in his voice.

"Se-Sera..."

"Yes?"

"My hands..." He was looking sideways awkwardly as Seraphina was still not letting go of his hands.

"O-oh right," Seraphina retreated her hands in a flash, settling back on the chair with a flustered expression. Her cheeks turned slightly red as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

As for Vlad, his eyes were fixed on the multiple system screens that had materialised the moment he agreed to Seraphina’s proposal.

"What the hell..." Vlad gasped inwardly, his eyes scanning through the cascade of overwhelming screens of quests before him. It took him more than a minute to read through all of them. They did not ask him to do anything aside from what Seraphina had explained to him about the requirements to become eligible for an S-Ranked quest.

While he was still looking at what seemed to Seraphina to be empty air, she called out to him, pulling him out of the daze.

"You cannot go back on your words," she said with side-eyes, thinking that he might be having second thoughts.

"Obviously not," Vlad chuckled, turning his eyes away from the system screens. He had only risen from his seat when Seraphina continued, "Wait... there is one more thing."
