Chapter 209: An Incomplete Form

Monsters.

That was the only correct way to describe the two currently fighting in the arena.

The barrier containing the two was now filled with cracks that were actively trying to fix themselves.

The arena floor was filled with craters, and the atmosphere surrounding them was so hot that the crowd could see heat waves rising.

The Church’s representative, Cyrillus, had a frown on his face as he continued floating above the arena floor, looking down at his opponent.

Darius, meanwhile, had a grin on his face and flames on his body.

It was very clear from the bruises on both his face and body that he was the one getting the most damage so far, and yet he was only grinning.

Which could only be seen as idiocy.

Cyrillus descended slightly and raised his palm, and the crowd watched as light mana started building up within it.

It was the same concentrated output that had been launching Darius across the arena for the past several minutes.

In response, the flames around Darius just grew hotter and hotter, but he had no intention of dodging.

A golden, translucent palm made of hard light was launched by his opponent, and the attack slammed into him, lifting him off his feet and launching him into the barrier again.

Darius stood up again with a smile still on his face.

’I’m getting my ass kicked,’ he thought cheerfully, ’this is great.’

Inanis, on his head, said nothing, which meant the dragon also thought this was great.

Or this was just revenge against its owner for insisting on calling it Bob instead of the name that the great Noctis granted it.

But what this truly was was something that neither of them understood.

All Darius and Inanis knew was that the more attacks he endured, the closer he got to unlocking something.

What that something was, neither of them knew.

But it was there.

It felt like a door, no, it was more accurate to say that he could feel the handle of a door without being able to see the door itself.

And with every attack that hit him, the handle slowly bent down, and the door slowly creaked open.

Or perhaps he was just getting closer to unlocking his masochistic tendencies... whatever it was, he would find out soon.

Cyrillus descended towards him before he started,

"You should surrender," he said, pleasantly and in the same gentle tone the Church representatives used, "there is no shame in acknowledging a superior opponent."

"Nah," Darius said, wiping blood from his jaw, "I’m good."

Cyrillus looked at him for a moment before letting out a sigh, "Then allow me to force you to give up."

With that, he lifted his palm in the air and from it came beams of light that seemed to have been launched at the barrier above them.

But just before the beams could reach the barrier, they changed direction and aimed directly for Darius.

The South’s crowd were now quiet as they watched the fight transform into a one-sided beatdown.

For some reason, after Cyrillus landed his first hit on Darius a few minutes into the fight, their representative seemed to have stopped trying to attack.

They knew it wasn’t because he had given up, thanks to the smile on his face, but they didn’t understand what his plan was either.

And if he truly did have something planned, he had better execute it now, else the South would lose again.

Darius watched as the beams aimed for him, and time seemed to slow down, literally, just before they could reach him.

The next second, he disappeared just before the beams of light could hit him.

The crowd quietly looked into the arena, waiting for the dust cloud to settle and reveal that the South had lost...again.

Unlike their expectations though, when the dust cloud dispersed, all they saw where Darius previously stood were more craters.

Even Cyrillus was quite confused at this, after all, he was certain that the beams were going to hit the opponent, so where was he?

Did he perhaps disintegrate the opponent?

That wouldn’t be good, after all, the pest was the son of someone important, and it’d cause trouble for the–

"Hey," Cyrillus’ thoughts were interrupted by a voice behind him, and the moment he turned around, he caught a punch with his face.

The attack had so much force that the Shockwave from it was visible, and the Church’s representative was launched towards the barrier, creating a new set of cracks on it.

"This is awesome!" Darius let out as he looked at his hands, "Bob, what’s this?"

The dragon was silent for a while before answering, {the elder dragons used to tell a tale. I didn’t listen to much of their ramblings, but this one was different.}

{They believed that if one was compatible enough with their host, they’d awaken a form of unimaginable power,} Inanis paused for a short while, {a power that can allow even a young dragon and their host to match the elders.}

{The Dragon Sovereign’s Mantle.}

"Cool," Darius muttered, his smile widening, but Bob quickly rained on his parade.

{Ours is still incomplete,} it said, {so we’re running on a timer right now, and it’s not even at full power, so end this quickly. }

Cyrillus finally recovered from the attack and looked up at the opponent floating above him with a frown.

Darius now had a pair of large wings behind him; there were scales on his face, but that wasn’t the cause of the representative’s frown.

Instead, the mana coming from Darius was now a lot stronger, so much so that Cyrillus felt himself being suppressed.

It was clear that he would lose if he didn’t use ’that’, but then again, the archbishop had forbidden them from using it, hence the reason Fidelis had to withdraw.

With a sigh, he wiped the blood rolling down his nose without a change in his expression as he said,

"You’re starting to annoy me, human."
