Chapter 543: Chapter 537: Visions

The first rays of dawn clawed over the horizon as the imperial horns sounded. Thousands of boots pounded the ground outside the walls.

Fresh troops from the capital, backed by heavy artillery and the last of Varyn’s loyalists hungry for revenge. They came in waves that didn’t stop.

Clara stood on the highest tower, her body more shadow than flesh now. Black veins pulsed under translucent skin. Selene sat beside her on a throne of coiled darkness, small legs dangling, eyes fixed on the battlefield. The child had grown overnight. Again.

Atlas gripped his sword with his good hand. His left arm hung useless at his side, bones still broken from the last fight.

Grief sat heavy in his chest—Elizabeth’s death, the collapse of everything they built. He charged the front anyway. No time for caution.

"Hold the breach!" he roared.

Lara watched from the command post behind the walls. Her leg was swollen black from infection, shoulder wrapped in bloody bandages.

Shadow corruption ate at her from the inside. She gave orders through gritted teeth, voice hoarse. Skritch’s absence showed everywhere—defenses lagged, gaps opened where his traps should have been.

The imperial forces hit like a hammer. Ladders slammed against stone. Grappling hooks flew. Cannons tore chunks from the parapets. Defenders screamed as they fell.

Clara raised her hand. Shadows erupted from the ground outside the walls. Living walls of darkness rose, twenty feet high, tendrils whipping out to grab climbers.

Men shrieked as the shadows pulled them in and dissolved them. Whole squads vanished into the black mass, armor and all.

"Break them," Selene said. Her voice was flat, childish, but carried across the battlefield.

The shadows responded. They formed coordinated spikes that punched through armor. Storms of black mist rolled over battalions, draining life until soldiers dropped dead in formation, bodies withered.

Defenders on the walls cheered, but their faces showed terror. The power protecting them was becoming something worse than the enemy.

Atlas hacked through an imperial soldier who made it over the wall. Blood sprayed his face. His useless arm burned with every movement. He saw Lara’s signal from the command post—subtle, hidden. Loyalists she had kept secret moved into position.

The betrayal hit mid-battle.

Three of Lara’s men broke from the defenders and rushed Clara’s tower. Blades out. Atlas cursed and sprinted after them, shoving through his own troops. "Stop this!"

Clara turned, shadows flaring. She impaled one assassin with a spear of darkness. The man convulsed as it drank him dry.

The second reached her. Atlas tackled him off the tower edge. They crashed onto a lower roof. The fall jarred Atlas’s broken arm. Pain exploded white-hot.

The third assassin got close. Lara herself limped forward from the command post, sword in hand despite her wounds. "She’s not our Clara anymore, Atlas. She’ll kill us all eventually."

The tower shook as artillery struck nearby. Stones crumbled. The three-way fight turned ugly on the collapsing structure.

Atlas blocked Lara’s swing. "Not like this!"

Clara unleashed a wave of shadow that knocked everyone back. Selene stood up on her small throne. The child’s eyes glowed pure black.

A vision slammed into every fighter on the tower. Lilith’s memories. The original community wasn’t a safe haven—it was a cage built to control people like them. Experiments. Lies.

The Reset had never been salvation. It was containment. The images burned into their minds: Elizabeth screaming in a lab, chains of shadow binding families, Clara’s own transformation accelerated by the same forces.

Atlas staggered. Lara dropped to one knee, blood leaking from her bandages. Even Clara froze for a second.

Selene spoke again. "Enough."

Her power burst outward. Shadows surged with new purpose. They reinforced the walls, crushed the imperial vanguard in a single coordinated wave.

The assault broke. Imperial forces pulled back, leaving heaps of corpses and shattered siege engines. The city defenders stood amid the ruins, half the outer district in flames and rubble. Massive casualties on both sides.

But it wasn’t over.

Lara’s loyalists lay dead or captured. Clara’s shadows bound Lara herself, dragging her away despite Atlas’s shouts. The child’s power had shifted everything.

Selene walked to Atlas. She placed a small hand on his ruined arm. "Borrow."

Life ripped from nearby wounded soldiers. Their bodies withered as the energy flowed into Atlas. His arm bones cracked back into place, muscle knit together, but black veins spread under the skin.

Shadow hunger woke inside him—a constant, gnawing need. He gasped, flexing fingers that now felt too strong and wrong at the same time.

Clara watched with approval, her form flickering between woman and nightmare. She executed three captured defectors publicly on the walls, shadows tearing them apart while the survivors watched. Atlas refused to kneel, but he stayed. For Selene.

Clara approached him as the sun climbed higher. "Rule beside me. Consort. Father to her. Or watch Lara die at dawn."

The words hung heavy over the blood-soaked stones.

---

The purge started before noon.

Clara’s forces moved through the ruined streets. "Weakness must go," she declared. Defectors, civilians too afraid to fight, anyone connected to Lara’s failed strike. Screams echoed between collapsed buildings. Bodies hung from makeshift gallows. Blood ran in the gutters.

Atlas walked beside Clara. Selene rode on her mother’s shadow-formed shoulders, watching everything with those black eyes. Atlas’s new arm throbbed with every heartbeat. He wanted to stop the killings.

He saw a mother clutching her child being dragged away and almost moved. But Selene’s gaze stopped him. The child needed him here. If he left, who would guide her?

In the keep, he confronted Clara alone while Selene waited in the next room, shadows curling protectively around the Regent.

"You’re killing our own people," Atlas said. His voice cracked. "This isn’t what we fought for."

Clara’s face was half shadow, eyes cold. "What we fought for died with Elizabeth. You failed to protect her. I won’t fail Selene. Lara would have us all weak again."

Old love flickered in her voice for a moment, buried under layers of power and loss. Atlas saw the woman he once knew. Then it vanished. She reminded him of every mistake, every death on their hands. The argument tore open wounds that had never healed.

Selene entered. The child had grown more. She looked older than her years now, movements precise. "Father needs strength."

She forced the power transfer. Darkness poured into Atlas. Visions of Lilith flooded him—ancient pacts, endless cycles of control, the horror of what Selene truly carried. Hunger gnawed deeper. His body strengthened, but his mind fractured under the weight.

With the new power, Atlas moved. He broke into Lara’s cell. She was dying, corruption blackening half her body. "Save Selene," Lara whispered. "Even if it means killing Clara. The child can’t grow up like this."

Atlas helped her stand. They fought their way toward escape as alarms sounded.

Clara met them in the central hall. Selene amplified both sides, shadows whipping wildly. The duel was personal. Atlas’s enhanced strikes clashed against Clara’s darkness. Lara, barely conscious, begged Atlas between blows. "Don’t let her turn our daughter into a weapon."

The fight wrecked the hall. Pillars crumbled. Atlas landed a hit that drew real blood from Clara’s human side. She retaliated, nearly killing him. Selene’s power kept both alive, feeding on the violence.

Then the external twist hit.

Empire remnants launched a suicide attack using captured shadow artifacts. They detonated them at the walls. Corruption surged through the city like wildfire.

Buildings twisted. People screamed as shadows erupted from their skin. Clara and Selene contained it, but the cost was massive. More of the city fell. Clara’s form grew more monstrous. Selene’s eyes stayed empty.

In the chaos, Atlas made his choice. He helped Clara stabilize the worst of the surge, saving hundreds of lives with his new strength. But he secretly opened a path for Lara.

A small group of survivors—those still clinging to the old dream—slipped out with her into the wilds. Lara was wounded, alone, but alive. She looked back once, eyes meeting Atlas’s across the distance, before disappearing.

Selene spoke her first full sentence as the survivors fled. "Father stays. Mother gone."

The words hit Atlas like a blade.

---

Clara declared the new order from the broken walls at dusk. "The Regency of Veins begins. Selene rules with me."

Atlas stood beside them. Broken. His shadowed arm ached with constant hunger. He held Selene on the parapet, the child’s black eyes reflecting the burning districts below. Scouts reported more imperial forces gathering on the horizon. Threats that would never end.

The original family was dead. No reunion. No redemption. Just necessity and power and the slow corrosion of everything they once were.

Atlas looked at his daughter. She smiled, small and terrible. He would stay. He would guide her from inside this nightmare. Maybe he could steer her away from the worst. Or maybe he was already too late.

Far away, Lara limped through the trees, supported by the few who still believed. She vowed silently to rebuild something better. Something without the veins of shadow choking everything.

The city smoldered. The child’s power hummed in the air. A darker legacy had taken root.

And it was only beginning.
