Chapter 544: Chapter 538: Hunger in the Throne

The keep smelled of wet stone and blood. Three days after the Regency of Veins took hold, Clara sat on the cracked throne in the main hall. Cracks ran through the floor like black veins.

Torches flickered low, their light swallowed by the shadows that clung to every corner. Selene perched on a smaller seat beside her, legs dangling, looking no older than five but carrying the stare of something ancient.

Atlas stood to their right, his left arm hidden under a heavy cloak. The shadow limb throbbed constantly now, a deep, gnawing hunger that never quite left. It wanted more. Always more.

"Bring the next one," Clara ordered.

Two guards dragged a man forward. His clothes were torn, face bruised from the work gangs clearing rubble outside. He had spoken against the Regency in the markets yesterday. Clara didn’t waste words.

She raised her hand. Shadows poured from her fingers like ink and latched onto the man’s chest. He screamed once as the life drained out of him in visible threads, flowing into Clara. His body hit the floor gray and empty.

Selene watched without blinking. "He was loud," she said.

Clara smiled thinly. "Loud ones die first. The quiet ones learn."

Atlas felt the hunger spike in his arm. The shadow twitched under the cloth. He clenched his jaw and stepped forward, grabbing a smaller prisoner from the line—a thin woman who had tried to hide food from the overseers.

He pressed his shadowed hand to her shoulder. Just a taste. Enough to quiet the burn. Warmth flooded into him, raw and sickeningly good. The woman gasped, knees buckling, but she lived. Barely.

He pulled back, breathing hard. The hunger eased for now. Clara noticed but said nothing. Selene tilted her head.

"Why do you always look like that after, Father?" she asked.

Atlas didn’t answer. He couldn’t. The bond between them had grown thicker since the declaration. Every time Selene used her power, it pulled at him, feeding the shadow inside.

Outside, the city moved under fear. Gangs of survivors hauled broken masonry under the watch of shadow-touched enforcers. Black veins pulsed in the walls of rebuilt barracks. Food was short, but obedience wasn’t.

Later that night, Selene found Atlas in the lower chambers where they kept the worst of the injured. A guard lay dying from infection, breath rattling. Selene walked up to him without hesitation.

"He’s hurting," she said.

Before Atlas could stop her, she placed both small hands on the guard’s chest. Shadows erupted—not from her directly, but from three civilians chained nearby for questioning.

Their life force ripped out in shrieks, slamming into the guard. His wounds closed. Color returned to his face. The civilians collapsed, two dead, one twitching.

Selene turned to Atlas, eyes bright. "See? Fixed."

Atlas stared at the bodies. His stomach twisted, but the shadow arm hummed with approval, stronger now. "You can’t just take from them like that."

"Why? Mother left. Was she weak?" Selene asked, voice flat. "She didn’t want to stay and make things strong."

The words hit like a blade. Atlas knelt, pulling her close despite everything. Her small body felt warm against the cold shadow in his arm. The bond surged, and for a moment he saw flashes—her power growing, veins spreading under the city, through him. It terrified him. It also felt inevitable.

"I won’t leave," he said.

"Good. I need you stronger."

A horn blared from the outer walls. Explosions followed, shaking dust from the ceiling.

"Rebels," Clara’s voice echoed through the shadows. "Your old friends, Atlas. Handle it."

Atlas grabbed his blade and ran into the night. The ruined districts were a maze of collapsed buildings and flickering shadow lanterns. Smoke rose from the artifact cache near the eastern gate. Lara’s people. They had struck hard.

He moved fast, shadow arm giving him unnatural speed. A figure darted between piles of rubble. Atlas lunged, tackling the man to the ground. They rolled, fists flying. Atlas pinned him and froze.

"Markus?"

His old friend from the first weeks after the Reset. They had shared watches, scavenged together, survived the early hordes. Markus’s face was gaunt, eyes full of hate.

"You bastard," Markus spat. "Selling out for that thing on your arm. Lara got out. We’re ending this."

More explosions. Atlas’s arm burned with fresh hunger. Draining Markus would end it quick. Power flooded his veins just thinking about it. The shadow whispered, *Take. Grow strong. Protect Selene.*

He pressed the shadow hand to Markus’s chest. The man screamed as life started to flow. Atlas’s vision sharpened, muscles surged. It felt right. Necessary. He stopped at the last second, yanking back.

"Run," Atlas growled, voice hoarse. "Tell Lara the Regency isn’t stable. Tell her about the child. But if you come back here, I can’t stop it again."

Markus stared, then scrambled away into the dark. Atlas hunted the others, catching two more. He drained them fully in front of witnesses, feeding the hunger openly for the first time by choice. Their screams echoed off broken walls. The shadow arm quieted, satisfied.

Back at the keep, Clara waited. Selene sat beside her, looking older already—maybe six now, sharper features.

"You let one go," Clara said quietly. The shadows in the room stirred.

Atlas didn’t deny it. "They won’t matter."

Selene reached out and touched his arm. "I can make you stronger forever, Father. Merge all the way. No more hurting."

Clara stood. "Choose, Atlas. Embrace it fully, or let her do it for you. The Regency doesn’t tolerate half-measures."

The hunger pulsed in agreement.

---

The celebration in the great hall turned to slaughter two nights later.

Lara’s cell hit during the feast. Smuggled blades and crude bombs. At the same time, horns sounded from the walls—empire remnants, carrying Lilith-tainted weapons that bled shadow. Dual fronts. Chaos.

Clara sent the bulk of the forces to the walls. "Hold them. I will deal with the rats inside."

Atlas moved through the smoke-filled halls, sword out, arm exposed and hungry. He rounded a corner and there she was.

Lara.

She looked thinner, eyes hard with betrayal. A pistol in one hand, knife in the other. She fired without hesitation. Atlas dodged, the bullet grazing his shoulder. Then she was on him, knife slashing.

"Traitor!" she screamed. "You chose them over everything!"

Their fight was ugly. No grace, just brutal survival. Atlas blocked with the shadow arm, feeling her blade bite into the darkness and draw blood anyway. He swung back, knocking her against the wall. She kicked low, catching his knee. They crashed through a side room, tables splintering.

"I stayed for Selene," Atlas snarled, pinning her momentarily. "She’s growing too fast. The power needs containment. This is the only way."

Lara laughed bitterly, blood on her teeth. "Containment? Look at you. You’re a monster now. That arm—it’s eating you."

She headbutted him, broke free, and stabbed toward his chest. The shadow arm caught the blade, absorbing it halfway. Atlas roared and backhanded her hard. Lara flew, skidding across the floor.

Selene appeared at the doorway, small form radiating darkness. "Don’t touch Father."

The child raised her hands. Shadows surged toward Lara. Atlas threw himself between them, taking the hit. Pain exploded through his body, but he held.

"Stop!" he shouted at Selene.

Lara staggered up, wounded badly, side leaking blood. "Atlas..."

"Go," he whispered. "The walls. There’s something worse coming. Lilith echo. Old. Strong. Selene’s power is calling it."

Lara hesitated, then fled down the corridor as more guards approached.

Outside, the wall defense was a meat grinder. Empire soldiers with crude shadow guns pushed hard. Then Selene’s pulse hit. From the keep, a wave of black energy rolled out across the city.

It smashed the attackers back, crumbling their lines. But it didn’t stop there. Civilians in the streets clutched their arms as shadow marks bloomed on their skin. Screams rose everywhere.

Clara stood on the battlements, merging deeper with the veins. Her skin darkened, eyes pure black. Less human by the second.

In the hall, they dragged Atlas before her. Lara had escaped, but Clara knew.

"Betrayal," Clara said. "After everything."

Selene stepped in front of him, hand on his shadowed arm. The touch burned and soothed at once. "Father is mine. He stays."

Distant thunder rolled. On the horizon, storms gathered—unnatural, laced with red lightning and writhing shapes in the clouds. The Lilith echo, waking.

Atlas dropped to his knees. The hunger in his arm roared for more. Selene’s fingers tightened, her power threading into him further. Clara watched, unreadable.

The Regency held. But the city was cracking open, civilians turning, resistance alive with new intelligence, and something ancient now turning its gaze toward them.

Atlas looked at his daughter, then at the storms. No way out. Only forward into the dark.
