Chapter 542: Chapter 536: Because
The empire hit Birmingham at dawn. Thousands of soldiers poured across the scarred fields, siege towers creaking forward on massive wheels, battering rams thudding against the outer gates.
Varyn commanded from a reinforced litter near the rear, his body still broken from earlier fights but his voice carrying over the roar. Arrows filled the sky. Catapults hurled burning pitch that splattered across the parapets.
Atlas stood on the wall, sword in his right hand, left arm hanging useless and bandaged. Every swing sent fresh pain up his shoulder. He hacked down a grappling hook and the soldier climbing it, then took a spear thrust to his side that opened his old wound again.
Blood soaked his shirt. Grief sat in his gut like lead—Elizabeth was gone, and now this.
"Push them back!" he shouted, voice raw.
Lara moved along the line like a machine, barking orders. "Skritch, drop the charges on the approach! Now!" The goblin’s unstable explosives went off in a chain of blasts that tore apart two siege towers and half a company of imperial troops.
But one misfire ripped through their own defenders, bodies flying in pieces. Civilians trapped inside the city screamed about the shadow plague spreading from the keep. Morale was already cracking.
Then Clara arrived.
She stepped onto the front parapet with Selene strapped to her chest in a harness of black cloth. Clara’s left side had turned fully to shadow now—skin replaced by writhing darkness that flickered and reformed.
She raised her arms. Massive shadow constructs erupted from the ground: clawed hands thirty feet tall that slammed into the nearest siege tower.
Wood splintered. Men screamed as the hand closed and crushed the structure, draining the life from everyone inside. Their bodies aged decades in seconds, skin wrinkling, hair falling out, before collapsing into dust.
Selene watched with wide black eyes. Then the baby moved her tiny hand in a deliberate push.
A pulse shot out from Clara, spreading across the entire wall line. The shadows exploded outward into a city-wide storm. Enemy ranks climbing ladders and ramps began crumbling where they stood.
Soldiers in their prime turned gray-haired and frail mid-climb, tumbling to their deaths. The walls themselves thickened with living darkness, absorbing impacts that would have shattered stone.
Clara laughed, low and rough. Her body shifted, becoming half-intangible. A sword passed through her shoulder without harm. She grabbed a captain trying to rally his men and drained him dry in three heartbeats, strength flooding into her.
Atlas stared, chest heaving. That was his daughter directing this.
Lara’s face went hard. She signaled a squad of loyalists carrying hidden containment runes—etched stones meant to suppress shadow power. They moved through the chaos toward Clara’s position.
Atlas pushed through the fighting to reach her. A collapsing section of wall gave him his chance. He leaped the gap as stones fell away behind him.
"Clara!" he roared. "This isn’t defense. This is what killed Elizabeth!"
Clara turned, shadows whipping around her. Selene’s black eyes locked on him. "The original family was always weak, Atlas. Soft. Doomed. I watched my sister die because we played by rules that don’t matter anymore. Look at what I can do now."
"You turned her death into an excuse to become this," Atlas spat. Blood dripped from his side. "You’re poisoning everything we built."
Lara arrived with her squad. They slammed the first containment rune into the stone near Clara’s feet. Blue light flared, trying to bind the shadows.
Selene reacted faster than any child should. She thrust out her hand and a lance of pure darkness shot forward. It caught Lara in the thigh, tearing through muscle and bone. Lara screamed and dropped, leg buckling. The wound looked permanent—deep, jagged, already blackening at the edges.
Troops on the wall froze. They had just seen the city’s two strongest defenders attack their greatest weapon while enemies still swarmed below.
The move saved the wall. Clara’s shadows surged again, reinforced by Selene’s burst, and swept the remaining imperial forces from the breach. The first wave broke. Bodies piled high outside. Varyn’s litter retreated just out of range.
But the damage inside was worse. Soldiers muttered. Some councilors slipped away from the fighting, eyes wide with fear and awe.
Clara stood on the ruined parapet, half her body pure shadow, Selene’s small form glowing with stolen power. "We held," she said. Her voice carried. "But the walls won’t last another push. I need full command. And Selene stays with me. That’s the price."
Atlas bled and hesitated, sword heavy in his grip. Lara, propped against stone with blood pooling under her leg, shook her head. "No. Prepare the strike team," she hissed to a trusted lieutenant. "Tonight."
They retreated to the keep as the sun climbed higher. The city stank of smoke and death.
Night fell and the empire came again. Breaches opened in three places under cover of darkness.
Fires lit the streets. Clara led the defense in the open now, striding through the fighting with Selene. She drained any invader who got close, shadows whipping out to pull life from entire squads.
When a group of panicked citizens tried to open a side gate to surrender, Clara executed them publicly—shadow tendrils sinking into their chests and yanking out years of vitality until they dropped as withered husks.
Atlas fought beside her out of necessity, blocking blows meant for her back while trying to stop the worst of it. "Enough, Clara. You’re killing our own people."
"Only the weak ones," she answered, crushing an imperial knight’s helmet with an intangible fist. "They would have let the empire in."
Skritch died near the central breach. The goblin rigged a desperate explosive under a massive siege tower that had punched through the inner wall. He lit the fuse, cackling, then took a crossbow bolt through the chest.
The blast took out the tower and a hundred enemies, but Skritch’s body was shredded in the backwash. His last words, gasped through blood: "Fuck these shadows... shoulda stayed underground."
Atlas reached him too late. He closed the goblin’s eyes, jaw tight.
During a brief lull in the square behind the main line, Selene acted. The baby forced a shared vision into Atlas and Lara’s minds—images of the Reset itself. Engineered containment.
The "cozy imperfection" that had defined their old life was never natural; it was Lilith’s leash to stop real rebellion. Power like this had always been waiting.
Clara seized on it. "We were tools. I’m breaking the leash. Join or get out of the way."
Atlas attacked. No words left. He drove at her with everything he had, left arm dragging, every strike fueled by grief and rage. Clara met him with shadow-enhanced strength. Their duel tore through the square—sword against darkness, old training against new corruption.
Atlas landed a cut across her cheek that actually drew blood before she turned intangible again. She slammed him into a wall, cracking ribs. He tasted blood.
Lara, limping badly now, had crawled to a rooftop with her bow. She nocked a silver-reef arrow—poisoned against shadow—and loosed. It flew true.
Selene’s hand snapped up. The arrow froze mid-air, then reversed. It hit Lara in the shoulder instead, driving her back. She fell from the roof into waiting arms of loyalists.
The main imperial push hit then. Varyn himself led it, riding forward despite his injuries. Clara met him in single combat. Selene spoke for the first time, voice small but clear and cold: "Protect... mine."
Power flooded Clara. She grew taller, shadows forming armor and blades. She shattered the largest siege engine with one strike, then drove a clawed hand through Varyn’s chest. The enemy commander died staring at the corrupted woman and the baby who had made it possible.
The victory was total. The empire fell back in disorder.
In the blood-soaked central square, Clara declared herself Regent Protector. Selene sat in her arms, black eyes scanning the kneeling troops. Most knelt out of terror and awe. A few did it willingly.
Atlas refused. He stood straight despite his wounds. "I won’t."
Clara looked at him and Lara. "One chance. Join or leave the city before dawn. The empire regroups even now."
Lara, bleeding from leg and shoulder, face pale, signaled hidden loyalists in the crowd. Blades were ready.
Selene reached out with a tiny shadowed hand toward Atlas. The touch promised power—enough to heal his ruined arm, to make him strong again. But the corruption would follow. He could feel it calling.
The original family stood divided in the square. Atlas torn between the child he loved and the monster she was becoming. Lara ready to die fighting. Clara triumphant, shadows spreading across the city like veins.
Far beyond the walls, imperial horns sounded. The final assault was coming with the dawn.
The dream they had once shared was not just dead. It had been eaten alive.
