Chapter 539: Chapter 533: Hold the line!
The horns sounded before the blood in the great hall had even dried. Atlas stood at the window of the secured wing, sword still slick in his hand, watching empire banners crest the outer walls.
Varyn’s loyalists inside Birmingham had done their job—gates swung open from within, and armored columns poured through like floodwater. Shouts and steel clashes echoed up from the lower corridors already.
Elizabeth lay on a stretcher against the far wall, bandages soaked red across her abdomen. She coughed once, weak but clear. "Get Selene out. Now. The east tunnels."
Selene whimpered in the sling across Atlas’s chest, her shadow marks pulsing faintly. The baby’s eyes were too aware for her age.
Skritch scurried between them, copper beetles clicking in his palms as he rigged hasty traps along the doorframes. "Fields up in thirty seconds. They’ll dampen shadow work, but not perfectly. Clara’s going to hate it."
Atlas didn’t answer. Clara had already vanished after the hall massacre, slipping out before anyone could stop her.
He had seen the look in her eyes—the hunger that came with the power. No time to dwell. He grabbed a shield from a fallen guard and kicked the door open.
Fighting spilled into the wing faster than expected. Empire soldiers in heavy plate crashed through a side passage, axes swinging. Atlas met the first one head-on, blade biting into the gap at the shoulder. Blood sprayed.
Skritch’s beetles detonated in sequence, filling the hallway with smoke and shrapnel. Elizabeth’s guards formed a tight circle around her stretcher, retreating step by bloody step.
"Hold the line!" Atlas roared. A shadow tendril whipped past his head—Clara’s work, somewhere out there. It wasn’t aimed at them. Yet.
Outside, the city burned in pockets. Clara moved through the underbelly like she belonged there. She had felt Selene’s distress through the bond the moment the horns blew. No hesitation.
She stepped into a shadow road and emerged behind an empire squad pushing a siege tower toward the inner gates. Her hands flexed. Black veins spread up her arms, hot and alive.
The first soldier didn’t even scream before the shadows drained him to a dry husk. Clara laughed once, short and sharp, as power flooded her.
She carved through the next group faster, roads twisting streets into killing grounds. A commander shouted orders from atop the tower.
Clara reached up with one hand and pulled. The entire structure groaned, then collapsed in a crash of timber and bodies. Dust billowed. She drank deeper, pulling strength from the fallen.
Civilians caught in the crossfire screamed as stray shadows brushed them. Clara didn’t stop. More power meant more control, meant keeping Selene alive.
The high hit hard—godlike, terrifying. Her vision sharpened, heart pounding like war drums. One eye blurred again, but she pushed through, turning another flank into ruin.
Atlas tracked her signal through the bond while the retreat continued. He handed Selene to a guard for a moment, then broke off during a lull in the fighting.
Skritch’s dampening fields flickered around him, making his own shadow steps feel sluggish. He found Clara in a ruined square, surrounded by husks.
"Clara. Stop this. Come back under control."
She turned, eyes dark. "Control? The shadows showed me what’s coming. Betrayals in the court. Your hesitation. Varyn isn’t the only threat."
Elizabeth arrived then, carried by two guards, blood still leaking. Her voice was thin but steel-edged. "You’re not protecting us. You’re becoming what Varyn warned about. The plague."
Clara’s laugh was colder this time. "The Reset’s precious imperfection died when you chained me. This is survival. Watch."
Skritch lunged forward with the Reef artifact glowing in his grip. Clara gestured once. The artifact shattered in a burst of feedback. Skritch screamed as one arm twisted unnaturally, bones cracking. He dropped, clutching the ruined limb.
Atlas stepped between them. "Enough. We need you with us."
Clara looked at Selene, then back at him. "I’ll deliver her safety. Then I work alone." She wrapped shadows around the group briefly, shielding them from incoming arrows, then vanished into the night as the immediate assault broke.
The defenders cheered weakly, but the cost showed—bodies littered the streets, many civilians among them.
Word spread fast: the shadow heir’s consort had turned the tide, but at what price. Terror replaced awe in the eyes of those watching from barricades.
Back in the blood-slick safe room, Elizabeth faded in and out. Lara arrived, face grim, issuing regency decrees to the remaining guards. "Martial authority. Secure the pavilion at all costs." Atlas met her eyes and spoke low. "Prepare containment. For Clara. If she spirals."
Clara watched from the outer shadows, alone. Distant horns signaled the empire’s main force closing in. No unity. Just fractures.
The night raid came hours later. Birmingham smoldered. Lara, acting regent, laid out the plan in the dim safe room. "Surgical strike on Varyn’s forward camp. We buy time or we lose everything."
Atlas insisted on leading the sword charge. Elizabeth refused to stay behind, strapped to a reinforced litter despite the fever in her eyes. Clara appeared without invitation, shadows cloaking the entire group for stealth.
They moved out under cover of darkness. Skritch’s remaining gadgets created diversions—flares and false signals that drew patrols away. Atlas’s blade took the first sentry silently. Clara’s shadows handled the rest, efficient and brutal, leaving crumpled forms in their wake.
Deep in the camp, they found Varyn’s tent. Inside, captured shadow artifacts pulsed on crude workbenches—stolen pavilion lore twisted for empire use. Selene’s marks flared suddenly. The baby cried out, and power surged through Clara like lightning.
A massive shadow storm erupted across the battlefield, black tendrils whipping through tents and soldiers. Clara stood at the center, veins spreading across her face, one eye blind again.
The high was euphoric, unstoppable. She saw visions in the dark—Varyn’s full pacts, ties to older threats like Lilith, empire-wide webs of control.
The camp routed. Soldiers fled or died as husks. Clara pushed further, draining an ally guard too deep in the frenzy before Atlas grabbed her arm.
"Clara! Pull back!"
In the chaos, Lara dragged a captured empire officer aside. No questions, no trial. She slit his throat for the intel scroll he carried. Atlas saw it. "What the hell are you doing? That’s not how we do this."
The argument exploded right there amid dying fires. Lara’s voice cut cold. "Court ruthlessness keeps us alive. You want pretty choices while they burn the city?"
Clara laughed bitterly, shadows writhing. "Hypocrites. You built this family on mess and choice. Now you want chains when the mess bites back." She held up a captured artifact that could stabilize Elizabeth.
"This binds Selene’s power permanently if we use it right. I won’t surrender it."
Elizabeth, summoning strength from somewhere deep, pushed up on the litter. "If you won’t stop, then leave us."
Clara dropped the artifact at their feet. Selene’s shadows lashed out in protest, catching Atlas across the sword arm. Pain flared—deep cut, permanent scar, grip already weakening. Clara walked away without another word.
They crippled Varyn’s immediate forces and seized maps showing the main army days out. But the pavilion itself now sat under direct threat. Varyn’s broadcast echoed across the city via captured relays: Clara branded rogue sorceress, the family divided traitors.
The group limped back to Birmingham at dawn. Elizabeth near death on the litter, breath shallow.
Atlas carried a crying Selene, whose marks now tugged toward Clara’s distant presence more than toward him or Elizabeth. Lara walked ahead, declaring martial measures that stripped Atlas of field command too.
Clara watched from the walls’ shadow, alone but stronger. She whispered to the dark, "I’ll protect what’s mine. Any means."
Inside the secured wing, the fractures ran deeper than any wound. No one spoke of unity. Tomorrow’s battle waited, and the family that entered this war no longer existed the same way.
Elizabeth’s condition worsened with every hour. Skritch’s ruined arm hung useless. Atlas tested his weakened grip on his sword and felt only regret-fueled momentum pushing him forward.
The chosen imperfection they once claimed was now a weapon turned inward—mocked in every accusation, twisted into justification for what came next.
Lara sealed the final orders. "We fight divided or we die. Choose quickly."
Atlas looked at Selene, then toward the night where Clara had gone. No good answers. Just war, vendettas, and the knowledge that every choice from here would cut something irreplaceable away.
The empire’s gates loomed larger. Their own implosion had already begun.
