Chapter 538: Chapter 532: No more Bindings.
The rain had turned the road to Birmingham into a slick gray mess. Hours out from the last safe camp, the wagons creaked under low clouds. Atlas rode point, sword loose in its sheath. Elizabeth lay in the covered litter behind him, bandages already spotting red again.
Clara walked beside it with Selene strapped tight to her chest, the baby’s faint shadow marks pulsing under her wraps. Skritch rode rear, fiddling with a handful of reef gadgets that looked like copper beetles.
No warning. Just the whistle of crossbow bolts.
Fifteen men burst from the treeline, empire crests on their shoulders, silver nets glinting. "Corrupted heir!" the lead shouted. "Take the marked one alive!"
The first volley punched through the litter canvas. Elizabeth cried out as the whole thing flipped. She hit the mud hard, fresh blood spraying from her mouth. Atlas roared and charged, blade up.
A mercenary met him with a heavy axe. Steel rang. Skritch hurled two gadgets; they snapped open into wire traps that tangled two attackers’ legs, buying seconds.
Clara didn’t hesitate. She ripped the partial bindings off her arms, the black tattoos flaring to life. Shadows exploded outward like living veins across the ground. Selene’s marks flared in response, feeding the power.
The road tore open. Black spikes shot up, impaling three men through the gut. Their screams cut short as the shadows drank them dry, glowing veins racing back into Clara and the baby.
She moved like something that shouldn’t exist. One step and she was across the road, hand closing around a mercenary’s throat. His skin wrinkled, hair graying in seconds as the life ripped out of him.
Weapons aimed at her rusted mid-swing, falling apart in flakes. Clara laughed once, short and raw, eyes solid black. Power surged through her veins, hot and sweet, pushing every doubt aside.
A mercenary slipped past Atlas and lunged straight for Selene with a silver dagger. Clara took the blade in her own side instead. Pain flared, but shadows sealed the wound instantly, black corruption crawling visibly up her chest like new tattoos. The attacker aged ten years in a heartbeat, collapsing as a husk.
"Clara!" Atlas dragged Elizabeth behind a wagon wheel. The queen’s face was pale, eyes wide with fury even as she coughed blood.
Clara tore another man in half with raw shadow tendrils. "Stay down," she snarled.
Elizabeth screamed over the chaos, "This is what you wanted! Turning her into your shadow puppet!"
Clara spun, ripping a mercenary’s arm off at the shoulder. Blood sprayed across the mud. "Better my puppet than Varyn’s corpse. You’d rather watch them die pure?" She laughed again, but it cracked at the edges.
The power high made her hands shake with hunger. One tendril whipped too close and nearly gutted Skritch as he scrambled for another gadget. The little man yelped and dove aside.
The fight ended fast after that. The last two mercenaries tried to run. Clara’s shadows chased them down the road, dragging them back screaming. When it was over, thirteen bodies lay drained and broken.
Two had fled into the trees. Clara stood in the center, chest heaving, new veins glowing under her skin. She looked stronger. Colder. Addicted.
Atlas checked Elizabeth. She was unconscious again, breathing shallow. Skritch limped over, eyes darting between Clara and the carnage. "That... that was more than before."
Clara pressed a hand to her bleeding side. The shadows closed it, but the corruption line had climbed higher, reaching her collarbone. Selene cooed softly against her, the baby’s marks steady and calm. "They needed the monster," Clara said flatly. "Now they have one."
They pushed on to the midway safehold, a squat stone building off the road. A raven waited on the perch inside, message from Lara tied to its leg. Assassins already moving in Birmingham. Accelerate or lose everything.
Clara read it once and burned the paper in shadow flame. "No more bindings. The shadows answer to Selene’s blood first now."
Atlas stood over Elizabeth’s pallet, jaw tight. "You’ll turn on us next."
"Force the bindings and I go rogue right here," Clara said. She cradled Selene, staring down at the unconscious queen. "They’ll thank us when the throne is ours."
The words hung ugly in the damp air.
---
Birmingham’s walls rose gray and unwelcoming under the same heavy sky. The group arrived under heavy guard, battered and bloodstained.
Lara met them in a secured wing of the pavilion, armor buckled on, face haggard. She took one look at Clara’s glowing veins and the corruption climbing her neck and cursed.
"You couldn’t keep it leashed for one more day?"
"Leashed got them almost killed on the road," Clara said. Selene fussed quietly in her arms.
Elizabeth had to be carried in on a stretcher. She was awake but weak, eyes burning whenever they landed on Clara. Atlas carried the weight of decisions, sword still crusted with dried blood. Skritch hovered near the door, gadgets ready.
"The public showing is in two hours," Lara said. "Varyn’s turned Lord Calvert. Promised him safety from the ’shadow plague.’ Half the council’s already whispering purge."
They had no time to rest. The great hall was packed with nobles, council members, and armed retainers. Torches lit the long tables. Lara walked the dais with Atlas beside her.
Clara stayed at the back, Selene hidden under a cloak for now. Elizabeth was propped in a chair to the side, pale but refusing to be hidden.
Lara lifted Selene high when the moment came. The baby’s markings were impossible to miss under the lights—dark veins shifting across her skin like living shadows. Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Varyn stood from the front row, voice booming. "Proof of corruption! The heir is tainted. Seize her before the plague spreads!"
A planted agitator in the crowd hurled a silver dagger straight at the child. It never reached. Clara stepped forward and the shadows detonated outward in a controlled dome.
Black energy crackled across the hall. Varyn’s own guards’ weapons turned against them, blades rusting and snapping as they swung.
The dome protected the dais while draining two attackers who got too close. They collapsed, years sucked from their bodies.
Screams erupted. Some nobles scrambled for the doors, shouting for purge. Others stared in raw awe at the raw power shielding the heir.
Lara seized the moment, voice cutting through the panic. "This is the bloodline’s strength, not its weakness! I declare emergency regency until the threat is ended!"
Chaos exploded. Varyn’s trap sprang. Empire reinforcements hit the outer gates with horns blaring. Lord Calvert, the traitor, lunged from the side of the dais with four armed men, straight for Selene.
Atlas met him with steel. Clara moved like night itself. Shadows lashed out, wrapping Calvert’s legs. He screamed as they drank.
In the melee Atlas fought beside her, blade flashing, but when Clara pushed deeper—tendrils starting to drain a surrendering guard for extra power—Elizabeth’s voice cracked across the dais.
"Take the child and leave if this is who you are now."
The words hit harder than any blade. Clara froze for half a second, veins pulsing bright. She handed Selene to Atlas without a word, then turned on Calvert.
Shadows speared through his chest and out his back in one brutal motion. The lord convulsed, aging to a withered corpse in public view. Blood and black essence pooled on the marble.
Lara recoiled. "This is what the court taught me, but worse."
Clara’s eyes were pure black again. "You wanted protection. You have it."
The family’s unity shattered right there on the dais. Guards clashed around them. Varyn slipped away in the confusion, but not before shouting a final message that echoed off the walls: "The empire alliance is sealed. We march on this pavilion itself."
Lara claimed temporary regency control in the shouting aftermath, but the cost was immediate. She pointed at Clara. "You’re out of inner decisions. Stay away from the war room."
Clara didn’t argue. She slipped into the crowd, shadows folding around her like a second cloak. Her voice carried back, low and chilling: "I’ll protect what’s mine. Even from you."
The hall stank of blood and fear. Atlas stood between the unconscious Elizabeth on her stretcher and a bloodied, isolated Lara. Selene stirred in his arms, tiny shadows flickering across her skin in response to the violence.
The family that had survived the Reset looked broken on that dais—fractured, bleeding, and pointed at each other’s throats.
Outside, the empire horns grew louder. War on two fronts was here.
Clara moved through the city shadows alone, power humming in her veins like a drug. The corruption had spread further. She didn’t care. Selene’s blood called to the dark now, and the dark answered.
The chosen imperfection wasn’t a comfort anymore. It was a weapon, and she was learning to swing it without mercy.
Atlas watched the doors where she’d vanished. He tightened his grip on Selene. The real fight was just starting, and the people he loved most might not all make it to the other side.
