Chapter 540: Chapter 534: The cleansing

The first rays of dawn hit the walls of Birmingham like a hammer. Empire catapults opened up immediately, hurling barrels of pitch and iron spikes that smashed into stone and wood. Flames licked up the outer districts.

Horns blared from the enemy lines while Varyn’s loudspeakers crackled across the battlefield, the same voice repeating the same message: "The shadow plague family has poisoned the realm. Burn them out."

Atlas stood on the northern parapet, his sword arm wrapped in fresh bandages that already seeped blood. The wound from the raid had cut deep into muscle and tendon. He could barely close his fist.

Lara moved beside him, directing her guards to plug gaps with whatever planks and bodies they had left. Skritch, one arm gone below the elbow, dragged a cart of his rigged explosives down a side street, cursing every step.

Inside the keep, Elizabeth lay on a cot, skin gray, breathing shallow. The healers had stopped the worst bleeding but fever had her now. She muttered in delirium, "Shouldn’t have chained her... Clara was right about the cost..."

The assault rolled forward. Empire infantry slammed scaling ladders against the walls while shielded companies pushed a battering ram at the main gate.

Arrows fell in sheets. Atlas roared orders, voice raw. A section of wall crumbled under concentrated catapult fire. Men screamed as they fell into the rubble.

Then the undercity grate exploded outward.

Clara stepped into the open like she owned the morning. Black veins crawled across half her face and down her neck, pulsing. Selene was strapped to her chest in a shadow harness, the baby’s small body already marked with faint dark lines that matched her mother’s. Clara raised both hands.

Shadows surged out of the ground in thick ropes, forming massive constructs—clawed limbs twenty feet tall that grabbed the nearest empire siege engine and tore it apart like paper.

The power hit her hard. She laughed once, sharp and ugly, as she lifted off the ground on wings made of pure darkness. She swooped low over an advancing company. Soldiers aged to dust in seconds, skin wrinkling, bones collapsing.

Those who dropped weapons and begged got the same treatment. The crowd on the walls shifted from screams of fear to ragged cheers. "Monster!" some still yelled, but others screamed her name like a prayer.

Atlas watched from the tower, jaw tight. He grabbed a rope and slid down to meet her.

Clara landed on a half-collapsed rooftop, constructs still rampaging behind her. "You see that? Without me this city dies by noon."

A squad of empire elites charged the street below. Clara flicked her wrist. A shadow spike impaled three men and drained them dry, their bodies dropping as husks. The surge made the veins on her face thicken.

Lara arrived with twenty archers, bows drawn. "Stand down, Clara. You’re not in control."

Clara’s eyes flicked to Selene, then back. "Control? I just saved your asses. Again."

Atlas stepped between them on the unstable stone. "Clara. Enough."

"No. Not enough." Clara’s voice cut like a blade. "Name me Protector of the Heir. Right here, in front of everyone still alive. Formal decree. Or I take her and finish this war the way it needs to be finished."

Lara’s face hardened. "You’re a walking plague worse than Varyn. Look at what you’re becoming."

"I’m becoming what’s necessary," Clara snapped. "You two are still playing Reset dreamers. Soft. Hesitant. You’d rather lose with clean hands than win with blood on them. The shadows were always coming. I’m just riding them first."

Selene stirred. The marks on her skin flared bright black. A pulse of power knocked Atlas back a step. He nearly went over the edge of the tower. Skritch chose that moment to lob one of his gadgets from below—an explosive meant to disrupt Clara’s constructs.

It detonated early, shredding his remaining arm further and spraying shrapnel across the roof. He screamed and fell.

The argument died in the roar of renewed fighting. Clara’s constructs smashed the last major breach. Empire forces pulled back as the sun climbed higher, leaving hundreds dead in the streets. Fires burned unchecked in three districts.

Varyn’s forces withdrew just enough for a parley flag. A captured pavilion spy was dragged forward, bloody and broken. The man spat his confession loud enough for the walls to hear: the empire had been feeding on Lilith leaks for years.

The shadows weren’t Clara’s invention. They were an ancient leak that the Reset itself had tried—and failed—to contain.

Clara’s mouth twisted into something close to a smile. "Told you."

She agreed to a night truce, but only if the binding chains stayed off. Atlas met Lara’s eyes and gave the smallest nod. Hidden silver-reef nodes under the central plaza were already primed.

Night fell on a burning city. Elizabeth seized in her bed, guards helpless. Selene’s eyes opened fully black for the first time, staring at nothing. Clara stood on the outer wall, shadows writhing around her ankles like living smoke. She felt the trap coming through the bond and smiled wider.

---

The next day they set the real trap.

Lara spread the word through every surviving runner: the family was fracturing. They would bring Selene to the central square at noon for "purification."

Atlas played the part, walking wounded and hollow-eyed, sword arm hanging useless at his side. Elizabeth stayed behind in the secured wing, condition critical, barely conscious.

Clara knew. She always knew now. She slipped into the square cloaked in shifting darkness, Selene still with her. "I’m here to protect her," she told Atlas when their eyes met across the plaza. "But if you try anything, the consequences are on you."

Varyn took the bait. Elite shock troops poured in from three directions, Varyn himself at the center in heavy plate etched with old runes. Fighting erupted instantly. Steel clashed. Arrows whistled. Atlas fought left-handed, clumsy and slow, taking a cut across his ribs that burned like fire.

Then Selene woke up.

The baby didn’t cry. She simply opened her black eyes wide and pushed. A city-wide shadow pulse exploded outward from her small body. Every shadow construct Clara controlled doubled in size and strength.

Clara’s veins surged forward, covering most of her torso. She became something else—skin like armored night, wounds closing as fast as they opened.

She waded into the elites and tore them apart. Men vaporized in waves of darkness. Varyn’s best soldiers aged to dust mid-swing, their screams cut short.

Visions slammed into everyone nearby. Flashes of the Reset: shadow tendrils wrapped around the old machinery of the world, guiding imperfect choices, leaking power that no one had planned for. The "chosen imperfection" had never been pure. Lilith’s touch had been there from the start.

Clara hit her peak. She laughed again, the sound raw and triumphant, as she carved a path straight toward Varyn.

Atlas triggered the containment.

Silver-reef nodes under the stone flared to life. Chains of glowing metal shot up and wrapped Clara’s limbs. She roared, power flaring, but the trap held long enough. Lara put an arrow through Varyn’s shoulder, then another into his thigh. The emperor staggered, bleeding heavily.

Selene reacted to her mother’s binding. The pulse reversed. A backlash wave slammed through the family bond. In the keep, Elizabeth’s wounds tore open again. Blood soaked the sheets. She gasped once, eyes wide.

Clara broke the silver chains with a scream that shook the square. Shadows exploded outward, shattering stone and hurling bodies. She rounded on Atlas. "You chose chains over blood again."

She raised a hand to kill him. Atlas didn’t flinch. For a second the old Clara flickered behind the veins—the woman who had once stood with them in the early days.

She pulled the killing blow. Instead she took the full force of Varyn’s final desperate strike, a rune-etched spear that punched through her side. She grunted, grabbed Selene tighter, and drove her fist into Varyn’s chestplate hard enough to crack it.

Varyn fell back, mortally wounded, guards dragging him away. "The empire will raze every stone of this cursed place!" he bellowed as they retreated.

The square fell quiet except for the crackle of fires and the moans of the dying.

Elizabeth was already gone when they reached her. Her last words, whispered to a messenger who barely made it in time: "Tell Atlas... forgive Clara. We all broke the rules."

Clara stood over the body for a long moment, Selene in her arms. The baby’s black eyes stared up at her without blinking. Clara’s corruption had deepened; the veins now reached her jawline and one eye was fully dark.

"I’m taking her for healing," Clara said. Her voice was flat, final. "The way only I can do it. When I return, the throne will be secured. On my terms."

Atlas tried to step forward. His sword arm refused to lift. Lara put a hand on his shoulder, holding him back.

Clara melted into the shadows with Selene. The last thing they saw was her silhouette on the distant ridge, the baby’s glowing black eyes like twin beacons.

The city smoldered. Survivors looked at Atlas and Lara with open fear now. Cursed. Broken. The poly family that had once been their hope was ash. Skritch lay in the infirmary, both arms ruined, muttering about better explosives next time.

Atlas’s sword arm was near useless, the damage permanent. Lara’s regency hung by a thread as councilors who had watched the public ultimatum began to splinter.

Distant empire drums rolled across the plains. More forces were coming.

The war continued. The original dream was dead. Clara was something new now—an unbound guardian with a child who carried the end of the world in her veins. Atlas and Lara stood in the ruins of the square as night closed in again, the cost of every choice written in blood and fire around them.

There was no going back. Only forward into whatever came next.
