Chapter 72: Chapter 72: RIP Phantom-V

As the Phantom-V carved through the desolate, star-lit stretch of the open highway, the peaceful hum of the gravity rings filled the quiet cabin.

Azriel kept one hand steady on the controls while his other casually rested high on Rosalind’s bare thigh, his fingers giving a firm squeeze every few minutes.

Rosalind didn’t pull away, her white tail simply coiled loosely around his wrist as she leaned back against the plush leather seat, still cradling her giant plush chimera.

They were halfway back to the estate when the air inside the coupe suddenly pressurized.

Rosalind’s golden eyes snapped open, her feline ears pinning back flat against her head as her instincts flared violently.

A split-second before Azriel’s Warrior’s Insight could even process the incoming danger, Rosalind threw her arm over his chest, pulling him into a tight, protective hug against her body.

With her free hand, she slammed a hidden emergency rune on the center console.

The glass panoramic roof retracted at blinding speed, and in a brilliant burst of white aether, Rosalind launched them straight up into the night sky.

BOOOOOOM!

A hyper-concentrated beam of dark mana struck the Phantom-V from the tree line.

The multi-million-credit sports coupe detonated in mid-air, erupting into a violent fireball of twisted alloy and shattered rune-glass that rained down onto the desolate highway below.

Rosalind hovered hundreds of feet in the air, a dense, shimmering field of white aura enveloping both her and Azriel, whom she held securely against her hip with one arm.

Azriel looked down at the blazing inferno of the car, his violet eyes narrowing into sharp slits. "Well... there goes my ride back."

Rosalind didn’t laugh.

Her face had completely transformed, the soft, blushing girl from the tavern was gone, replaced instantly by the icy, terrifying Duchess of the Realm.

She slowly turned her head toward the dark sky behind them.

Floating in a triangle formation fifty paces away were three figures clad head-to-toe in matte-black, light-absorbing assassin armor.

Their bodies were completely concealed, no hair, no skin, not even a tail or feline ear visible.

Their presence was dead, erased of any life signature, but the suffocating pressure radiating off the leader in the center was unmistakable.

A GrandMaster.

Accompanied by two Masters.

"Hand him over, Duchess," the leader in the middle demanded, her voice distorted into a flat, mechanical drone by her helmet’s vocal runes.

"Your slave is not worth dying for on an empty road."

Rosalind’s golden eyes grew deathly cold, her pupils contracting into razor-thin slits.

"You blew up my car," Rosalind said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying register that made the very atmosphere vibrate with dense, white aether.

"And you threatened my partner."

[LIVE CHAT]

[Sadistic69] (Red): AN AMBUSH?!

[Star_Gazer_Yuna] (White): Holy shit they blew up the Phantom-V

[Nine_Tailed_Vixen] (Cyan): Look at Rose’s eyes! She is ABSOLUTELY LIVID! They interrupted her date day and destroyed her favorite car!

[Boundless_Slacker] (Red): Notice how she grabbed Azriel BEFORE the car even got hit?

[Lusty_Sera] (Golden): ’You threatened my Partner’, SHE CLAIMED HIM PUBLICLY IN FRONT OF ASSASSINS! MY HEART!

[Moon_Priestess_99] (Cyan): PROTECT HIM, ROSALIND! ANNIHILATE THOSE BLACK-CLAD BITCHES!

[Crimson_Fury] (Cyan): Three high-tier assassins... this isn’t a casual mugging. Someone high up is involved...

Without another word, the two side assassins vanished from sight, their bodies dissolving into streaks of shadow as they moved to flank Rosalind at instantaneous speed.

Twin daggers dripping with purple, mana-corroding poison slashed through the air toward her neck and back.

Rosalind didn’t even shift her stance.

BANG!

A localized shockwave of white pressure erupted from her skin, shattering the shadow-step spell mid-transit.

The two flanking assassins gasped as the sheer force slammed into them, sending them skidding backward through the air.

"Hold on to me!" Rosalind commanded, her golden eyes blazing.

Azriel didn’t argue.

He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, locking himself against her to give her full freedom of her upper body.

His violet eyes strained, but these assassins were operating on a realm of speed completely beyond him.

To his mortal sight, they weren’t even people, they were jagged, black blurs slicing through the air, tearing open shockwaves that rattled his teeth.

She raised her right hand, her fingers curling into a sharp claw.

The sky above them turned a violent, bruised purple as a massive, spectral feline claw forged from compressed white light materialized in the clouds, spanning fifty meters across.

The assassin leader’s mechanized voice lost its calm. "Scatter—!"

CRASH!

Rosalind brought her hand down, and the colossal white claw slammed into the sky with the force of a falling star.

The shockwave blew the dark clouds apart, illuminating the nighted highway in a blinding flash of divine destruction.

But the assassins weren’t amateur mercenaries.

Before the blinding light could even fade, the GrandMaster assassin cut straight through the white shockwave.

Her black blade unleashed a jagged wave of pressurized aura, aimed directly at Azriel’s unprotected head.

Rosalind’s feline ears pinned flat against her skull. Unable to dodge without exposing Azriel, she violently twisted her own body in mid-air, using her shoulder to block the strike.

PHSHHH!

A deep cut tore through her pink dress, spraying crimson blood into the night sky.

Azriel’s jaw clenched, a cold sense of absolute powerlessness washing over him as he felt her body shudder against his.

He couldn’t track their trajectories; every time he tried to lock his gaze onto a threat, it dissolved into a streak of shadow and reappeared from a dead angle.

In this high-tier aerial dogfight, he was completely outmatched, a fragile anchor forcing a GrandMaster to take direct hits just to keep him breathing.

"Rose—!" Azriel growled over the roaring wind.

"Don’t move!" Rosalind roared back, her voice laced with pure, unadulterated savagery.

The two flanking assassins seized the moment, appearing instantly on either side of them. Their poison-dripping daggers thrust toward Azriel’s ribs.

Rosalind didn’t pull back.

Fueled by raw, fierce protectiveness, she let out a blood-curdling feline battle-cry that shook the very foundation of the sky.

A White aura erupted from her skin in a wild, chaotic tempest.
