Chapter 177: Target: Vampire Prince [1]

Cael ignored Lysa’s expression and turned away. He had said what he needed to say, and her reaction was not his concern. The morning light filtered through the trees, casting long, dappled shadows across the clearing. Dust motes danced in the golden beams, suspended in the still air. He took another bite of his apple, chewing slowly, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon where the city’s skyline blurred into the haze.

The silence stretched between them, broken only by the rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. Lysa remained tied to the pillar, her jaw tight, her eyes burning with a mixture of embarrassment and frustration. She had been played, and she knew it. Her pride had taken a hit far worse than her cheek. The rope bit into her wrists, a constant reminder of her defeat.

It did not take long before Luke arrived.

The moment Luke stepped into the clearing, he stopped. His eyes swept across the scene—the fallen trees, their trunks splintered and broken, the craters carved into the earth like scars, the scattered debris that littered the ground. His gaze lingered on the broken branches and the deep grooves in the earth where Lysa had crashed through the trees the night before.

Then his eyes fell on Lysa. Tied to a pillar. Rope wrapped tightly around her wrists. Her cheek swollen and bruised, a dark purple mark spreading across her pale skin like a blooming flower.

Luke blinked. He looked at Cael, then back at Lysa, then at Cael again. His expression shifted from confusion to disbelief to something unreadable.

"What... happened here?"

Cael shrugged, his voice calm and indifferent. "She attacked me. I defended myself."

Luke stared at him for a long moment, his crimson eyes searching Cael’s face for any hint of deception. But Cael’s expression remained neutral, unbothered, as if the events of the night before had been nothing more than a minor inconvenience. The apple in his hand was nearly finished, the core the only evidence of his casual demeanor.

The apple’s sweet taste lingered on his tongue, a small comfort against the unease settling in his chest. He had not expected to see Lysa again, nor had he expected their reunion to begin with a fistfight.

Luke sighed and walked over to Lysa. He quickly removed the ropes, his fingers working with practiced ease. The rope fell away, and Lysa rubbed her wrists, her jaw tight, her eyes fixed on the ground. She did not meet Cael’s gaze. The shame burned in her chest, hot and suffocating.

Luke studied her for a moment, then turned to Cael. His expression shifted slightly. There was something different in his eyes—curiosity, perhaps, or caution. A wariness that had not been there before.

"Cael," he said slowly, his voice measured. "What is your rank?"

Cael paused. He considered the question for a moment, weighing his answer. He knew his true rank was [Platinum], but revealing that might raise uncomfortable questions. So he replied, his voice flat.

"Gold 3."

The words hung in the air like a stone dropped into still water. Luke’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. Lysa’s head snapped toward Cael, her expression a mix of shock and disbelief.

Lysa felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. She was a [Gold 2] ranker. She had challenged a [Gold 3] ranker, thinking she could handle him. But she had been completely outclassed. The memory of his fist connecting with her cheek sent a fresh wave of pain through her jaw. How had she been so careless? How had she misjudged him so badly?

She had confidence in her abilities. She had fought against [Platinum] rankers before. She had even held her own against [Diamond] rankers. But Cael was different. He was abnormal. His strength did not match his rank. There was something else beneath the surface, something she could not quite grasp. Something that made her skin crawl.

Luke, however, felt something else entirely.

The moment he had arrived at the scene, he had felt a brief sense of death. It was fleeting, barely perceptible, like a whisper carried by the wind. But it had been there. A cold shiver that ran down his spine, a warning that his instincts could not ignore. He had felt death before—he wielded it, after all—but this was different. This was not his own power. This was someone else’s.

A joke. He, someone who had the Death element, actually felt a sense of death from someone. And that someone was his own brother.

Luke studied Cael’s violet eyes. They were cold. Indifferent. Distant. They reminded him of something very unpleasant. Something he did not want to think about. A memory buried deep, a truth he was not ready to face. The weight of it pressed against his chest, but he forced himself to breathe.

He forced himself to calm down and pushed the thought aside. There was no time for doubts. No room for hesitation. The mission came first. It always did.

"I have a plan," Luke said, his voice steady. "Let’s go inside."

They walked into the building—the garage that served as Luke’s base. The interior was sparse but functional. Maps were pinned to the walls, their edges worn and marked with annotations in red ink. Weapons were stacked in the corners, gleaming under the dim light of a single bulb. A table sat in the center, covered in papers and notes, diagrams and sketches that detailed the layout of District Kazi.

Luke began explaining his plan.

He started with District Kazi, the run-down district on the outskirts of human territory. His words were careful, measured. He did not reveal everything at once, choosing his phrases with precision. He pointed to the maps, tracing routes with his finger, marking potential entry and exit points. His voice was steady, confident.

But Cael listened carefully. He understood what Luke was planning. And truth be told, he was impressed. The plan was methodical, well thought out. Luke had clearly spent a great deal of time preparing. Every detail had been considered, every contingency accounted for.

Luke explained that when his team and Cael’s team had gone to District Kazi for the mission, after Cael had left to District Neva to meet with Elowyn, Luke had found something in the vampire hideout. An item that the vampires wanted very dearly. Something the Vampire Prince was searching for.

Lysa, who was a vampire herself, had helped Luke investigate. Together, they had learned that the Vampire Prince was currently in District Neva, and that he was growing impatient. The longer it took to find the item, the more reckless he would become. His frustration would make him sloppy. And sloppiness could be exploited.

After a brief discussion, they all decided to go to District Kazi. The plan was set. The pieces were in motion.

Cael nodded along, but his eyes narrowed slightly. The Vampire Prince was a [Mythril] ranker. A target of considerable power. But Cael did not care much about him. Whether the Vampire Prince lived or died was irrelevant to Cael. He did not fear the Vampire Prince.

Yes, even though the Vampire Prince had killed Cael in the original novel, Cael did not really care. That was the past. A different timeline. A different version of himself. What mattered was the present, the choices he made now. The Vampire Prince was just another obstacle, another name on a list.

What truly worried Cael was the unknown energy. The gray energy that had surrounded Lysa’s wing. And the gray wing itself. He had seen it on both Mira and Lysa. Both of them were connected to Luke. The pattern was too clear to ignore.

Cael would be a fool if he did not consider the possibility that Luke was involved with the unknown energy. Not to mention, Luke was a variable. He was very different from the Luke in the novel. His actions, his choices, his power—all of it had shifted. The Luke standing before him was not the same Luke from the story he had read.

In Cael’s eyes, the Vampire Prince was not much of a problem compared to Luke. The Prince was a known quantity. Luke was an unknown. A variable that could tip the scales in unpredictable ways.

But Cael decided to wait. He would wait until the main body came out of the realm before resolving any issues with Luke. If everything was a misunderstanding, that would be good. If not...

The thought lingered in his mind, cold and unwelcome. He pushed it down, burying it beneath layers of focus and resolve. There would be time for such considerations later. For now, the mission came first.

Cael would do what he must. Even if it meant confronting his own brother.
