The next day arrived faster than any of them expected.

The sun had barely risen when Cael, Luke, and Lysa stood at the edge of District Kazi, their eyes fixed on the rundown buildings that stretched before them like a graveyard of forgotten dreams. The district was a shadow of its former self—crumbling walls that leaned precariously, shattered windows that gaped like empty eye sockets, streets littered with debris and the remnants of lives long abandoned. It was the kind of place where people went to disappear, where memories were buried and never dug up.

The air itself felt heavy here, thick with the weight of forgotten lives. Graffiti covered the walls, faded and peeling, the words barely legible. The scent of decay and damp earth clung to everything, a constant reminder of the district’s slow death. Even the wind seemed to avoid this place, leaving it trapped in a stillness that felt almost suffocating.

Cael could not help but recall his days in this district. The memories were faint, blurred by time like old photographs left in the rain, but they lingered at the edges of his mind like half-forgotten dreams. He had walked these streets before, had seen the despair that clung to every corner. He pushed the thoughts aside. There was no room for nostalgia. Not today.

He forced his gaze forward, focusing on the task ahead. Luke stood beside him, his crimson eyes fixed on the district’s heart. Lysa’s gray eyes darted from shadow to shadow, her body coiled like a spring. They were ready. They had to be.

They entered the district in a low-key manner, avoiding any eyes that might be watching from the shadows. Their footsteps were silent, their movements deliberate, each step measured to avoid drawing attention. Lysa moved ahead, her pale hair hidden beneath a hood, her gray eyes scanning the streets with the practiced vigilance of someone who had survived in places like this.

The plan was simple.

Lysa would create a disturbance at the edge of the district, drawing attention away from the main target. As a vampire, she could blend in with the local vampire population, hiding among them like a wolf among wolves until the mission was complete. Meanwhile, Cael and Luke would strike the Vampire Prince.

Cael would use Mana Sovereignty to stop the Prince from using mana for three seconds. In that brief window, Luke would deliver the killing blow.

Simple. Clean. Efficient. The kind of plan that worked best when there were no complications.

Of course, plans rarely survived contact with the enemy. Cael knew this better than most. But he had learned to adapt, to improvise, to turn chaos into opportunity. Whatever happened tonight, he would be ready.

Soon, night fell over District Kazi. The streets grew darker, the shadows longer, stretching across the cracked pavement like grasping fingers. The sounds of the city faded, replaced by an eerie silence that pressed against their ears. The only light came from the faint glow of distant fires and the pale crescent moon hanging overhead.

The moon cast silver light across the broken streets, illuminating the jagged edges of shattered windows and the twisted remains of street signs. Somewhere in the distance, a dog howled, the sound echoing through the empty alleys like a warning.

As planned, Lysa drew the attention away. A commotion erupted at the edge of the district—shouts, the crash of breaking glass, the sound of hurried footsteps. It was enough to pull the eyes of the local vampires away from the mansion where the Prince was staying.

Cael and Luke moved through the darkness, their footsteps silent, their presence hidden beneath layers of mana suppression. They slipped through alleys and across empty streets, ghosts in the night. They reached the building where the Vampire Prince was staying—a decrepit structure that had once been a mansion, its grandeur long since faded. Its walls were cracked, its windows boarded, but a faint light flickered from within like a dying heartbeat.

Cael and Luke exchanged a glance. Then they moved.

They entered through a window on the upper floor, their movements silent and precise. The room they entered was dark, cluttered with overturned furniture and scattered debris. Dust coated every surface, disturbed only by their careful footsteps. But beyond the door, they could hear voices.

A girl’s painful screams. A man’s cruel laughter.

Cael’s jaw tightened. His hands curled into fists. He did not look at Luke. He simply moved forward, his steps measured, his resolve hardening with each passing second.

They reached the door and peered through the crack. Inside, a man stood over a bound girl, his back turned to them. He was tall and pale, with dark hair that fell across his shoulders like a curtain of shadow. An air of arrogance radiated from his very posture, the kind of confidence that came from years of power and privilege. There was no doubt—this was the Vampire Prince.

Cael nodded at Luke. Then he stepped forward and called out.

"Hey."

The Vampire Prince froze. He turned around, his crimson eyes wide with shock. He had not heard them approach. He had not sensed their presence. His hand shot up, ready to use his bloodline skill—

But nothing happened.

For three seconds, his mana refused to respond. The world seemed to slow, the air growing thick and heavy. His eyes widened further, confusion and fear flickering across his face like shadows dancing in candlelight.

Before he could think, a dagger pierced his temple.

The Vampire Prince’s body went limp. He collapsed to the ground, his eyes still open, his lips moving weakly, a final plea escaping his throat.

"Save me... Elder..."

The sound of his voice was barely a whisper, a dying breath that seemed to hang in the air for a moment before fading into silence. The girl in the corner had stopped screaming. Her eyes were wide, filled with a mixture of fear and hope that Cael did not have time to acknowledge.

Then he was still.

The Prince was dead.

Cael’s eyes widened slightly when he saw the dagger in Luke’s hand. It was radiating a black-colored aura. Dark. Dense. Hungry. It seemed to drink the light around it, pulsing with a cold, ancient power.

It was not like the moonlight he wielded, nor the frostflame that danced at his fingertips. This was something darker, older. A remnant of something that had existed long before the ranker system, before the world had been shaped into its current form.

Cael wanted to copy it. And sure enough, the system interface already opened before his eyes.

[SS-Rank Skill: Copy Activated.]

[Do you wish to copy S-Rank Skill: Aura of Death?]

[Yes] [No]

Cael did not hesitate. He selected Yes.

The skill transferred, settling into his core like a cold weight. It was foreign, alien, but he could feel its potential. He did not have time to examine it. The mission was complete. The Vampire Prince was dead.

"Let’s go," Luke said, his voice low and urgent.

They turned to leave—

And then a sense of dread enveloped them.

It was suffocating. Heavy. Like a mountain pressing down on their shoulders, threatening to crush them. A powerful aura locked onto them, pinning them in place. The air grew thick, almost unbreathable.

Luke’s eyes widened slightly. He muttered under his breath, "Damn it... an [Adamant] vampire."

Before they could react, an arrogant yet powerful voice echoed through the building.

"How dare you?"

The walls and roof were ripped apart by an invisible force. Debris flew in every direction, and Cael and Luke shielded their eyes as dust and rubble filled the air.

When they looked up, they saw a figure hovering in the air.

He was old. Ancient. His hair was white, his face lined with age, but his crimson eyes burned with a fury that had not dimmed with time. He wore dark robes that billowed around him like shadows given form. His presence was overwhelming, a pressure that made even breathing difficult.

Undoubtedly, this was the Elder that the Vampire Prince had called out to.

The Elder’s gaze fell on the Prince’s corpse. His expression twisted with rage, his features contorting into something inhuman.

"Insects," he hissed, his voice dripping with venom. "You dare to kill my prince?"

He turned his burning eyes toward Cael and Luke.

"I will kill you."

The Elder’s voice was cold, devoid of emotion beyond rage. His aura expanded, pressing down on them with even greater force. Cael felt his knees threaten to buckle, but he forced himself to stand firm. He had faced worse odds. He had survived when others had fallen. This would be no different.
