Chapter 172: Lucian Vayne [5]
"Come and get me out of here."
Luke stared at the message for a long moment. The glow of his phone screen illuminated his face in the dim hotel room.
The words were simple, direct, and utterly Cael. No explanation. No context. Just a request.
He let out a slow breath and typed back.
"What happened?"
A few seconds later, Cael’s reply came.
"Seraphina grounded me. I am not allowed to leave the academy walls."
Luke shook his head. Of course. That was just like Seraphina. He typed back.
The night air was cool against his skin. He stared at the ceiling, wondering what mess Cael had gotten himself into this time.
"I will come to the academy tomorrow morning."
...
The next morning, Luke arrived at Everbright Academy.
The gates loomed before him, familiar and imposing, their iron frames gleaming under the morning sun.
Students moved through the roads, their voices carrying across the grounds like a low hum.
Some were training. Some were laughing. Some were rushing to class.
Everything seemed normal and peaceful. But there was a subtle tension among the students, a quiet buzz of anticipation that Luke could feel in the air.
The Grand Summit Trials were approaching, and everyone could feel it. The academy was holding its breath.
He walked toward the administrative building, his steps measured and deliberate. The gravel crunched beneath his boots.
He knew what he had to do. He had to get Cael out of the academy. And to do that, he had to convince Seraphina.
...
Luke reached the vice-principal’s office door and knocked.
"Come in," her voice came from inside, calm and controlled.
Luke entered. Seraphina was sitting behind her desk.
But unlike usual, her desk was clean. No stacks of paperwork. No mountains of documents. She sat with her hands folded, twirling a pen between her fingers.
Her amber eyes fixed on Luke the moment he stepped through the door.
"Lucian Vayne, former student of Everbright."
Seraphina said, her voice carrying a hint of amusement.
"What do I owe for the sudden visit?"
Luke cleared his throat.
"Good morning, Vice Principal. I am here because I need to request leave for Cael."
The twirling pen paused. Her gaze sharpened, studying him with curiosity.
"Why?"
Luke met her eyes and said,
"There is something I need his help with. It is important."
Seraphina leaned back in her chair. Her gaze was steady, unblinking.
"And what exactly is this important thing? Is it related to the Council?"
Luke immediately shook his head and replied,
"No. This has nothing to do with the Council. I cannot tell you the details. But I can promise you it is not reckless. And I will bring him back in one piece."
Seraphina was silent for a long moment.
The tension in the room was thick, heavy, like the air before a storm. She studied Luke like she was trying to read his thoughts, peeling back the layers of his words.
But Luke did not flinch.
He had chosen his words carefully. He knew about her skill. He knew that if he said anything false, she would know.
So, he said nothing false. Every word was true, carefully wrapped in deliberate vagueness.
Seraphina sighed, a soft sound of resignation.
"Fine."
Luke almost smiled and said,
"Thank you, Vice Principal."
She reached for a form, signed it quickly, and slid it across the desk toward him.
"Only three days, no more."
Luke took the form and nodded.
"That is enough."
He turned to leave, but Seraphina’s voice stopped him.
"Luke."
He paused at the door as he heard her saying.
"Keep an eye on him, he is too reckless."
Luke nodded his head and replied with a smile.
"I know, and I will."
...
In the dormitories, Inside Cael’s dorm room.
Luke found Cael waiting in his hall room.
The room was simple and clean, with two sofas, a small coffee table, and a TV mounted on the wall.
A few books were stacked on the shelves, and the curtains were drawn back, letting in the morning light. The light filtered through the windows, casting soft shadows across the floor.
Cael was sitting on the edge of the sofa, watching a movie on the TV. His expression was neutral, his hands resting on his knees. He looked relaxed, almost casual.
Seeing Luke enter the room, Cael looked up and said,
"That was fast. So, how did it go? Did Seraphina agree?"
Luke smiled, a hint of satisfaction in his eyes, then he replied,
"Yes. She agreed."
Cael immediately leaned forward and asked,
"How?"
Luke shrugged as he sat down on the opposite sofa, then answered,
"I have my ways."
Cael raised an eyebrow, clearly not satisfied with that answer. But he did not press. Instead, he asked,
"Alright, tell me how many days did she give for leave?"
Luke reached into his coat and pulled out the signed form. He handed it to Cael.
Cael took it, his eyes scanning the page. When he saw the date, he let out a low whistle.
"Three days. Impressive."
Then Luke pulled out another piece of paper from his pocket and handed it to Cael.
"Here. Go to this address. Someone will meet you there. I will come a day later."
Cael glanced at the address, his brow furrowing slightly as he asked,
"What is this place?"
Luke shook his head and said,
"Don’t worry. It is my base."
Cael nodded and said,
"Fine. Do not keep me waiting."
Then Luke slowly stood up while saying,
"Well, since I am here, I might as well say hello to Mira."
He turned and left the room, the door clicking shut behind him.
Meanwhile, Cael looked at the door for a long moment before shaking his head. Then he muttered,
"His temperament felt different today."
...
That day, Luke met with Mira.
They sat together in a small café near the academy, sharing stories and laughter.
Mira’s eyes sparkled as Luke talked about his recent council missions, and Luke found himself relaxing in her presence.
For a few hours, the weight of his past lifted. They exchanged a temporary goodbye at the café entrance, then went their separate ways.
But instead of heading toward the gates, Luke walked deeper into the academy grounds. He passed the training fields where students sparred under the afternoon sun.
He passed the dormitories and the training halls. His steps were steady, purposeful.
He stopped in front of a simple, yet classic house. It was one of the residences reserved for academy staff, the one assigned to Seraphina.
The garden was well-kept, with flowers blooming in neat rows. A warm light glowed from the windows, soft and inviting.
Taking a deep breath, Luke entered the courtyard and rang the bell.
Today, he had come here to meet Lady Martha. There were questions that needed to be answered, questions that only Lady Martha could answer.
Although he had already heard those words from his father, James Vayne.
Luke had denied them. He had buried the truth deep inside, refusing to accept it. He was not ready.
But now, it was different. He was no longer the person he used to be. He had seen too much, lost too much.
And now, he was ready to face the truth, even if it was a cruel reality.
-CLICK.
The main door slowly opened. A housekeeper greeted Luke with a polite nod.
Luke smiled softly and asked,
"Is Lady Martha here?"
The housekeeper nodded and said,
"Yes."
Luke took a small breath.
"Would you please tell her that Lucian Vayne has come to meet her?"
The housekeeper nodded and said,
"Please wait."
Then the housekeeper went inside, and Luke waited patiently.
But the more he waited, the more anxious he became. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides. His heart pounded against his ribs.
His palms grew sweaty. He had faced vampires and wraiths, yet this simple conversation terrified him more than any battle.
Soon, within a few minutes, the housekeeper returned, then with a smile she said,
"Please come inside."
With slow, measured steps, Luke walked into the hall. And there, sitting on a sofa, he saw a familiar lady.
She had violet eyes, just like Cael’s. Her complexion was not good, pale and tired, but she carried herself with an air of regal dignity.
It was Lady Martha, Cael’s mother.
Looking at Luke, Martha smiled warmly and said,
"It has been a long time since I saw you, little Luke. How have you been all these years?"
Luke smiled and replied,
"I am doing great."
They exchanged small talk, discussing recent events and Luke’s work as a Council agent.
Likewise, Luke asked about Martha’s health, and she answered with gentle reassurances.
The conversation was light, comfortable.
But after a few minutes of idle talk, Luke took a small breath. His hands rested on his knees. He looked into Martha’s violet eyes.
Then he hesitantly asked,
"Lady Martha... are you my birth mother?"
