Chapter 171: Lucian Vayne [4]
It was the darkest day in the history of the vampire kind.
I stood among the soldiers on the human side, my eyes fixed on the scene unfolding before me.
The red sky still hung above, casting an eerie glow across the battlefield.
The air was thick with the smell of blood and ash, and the screams of the dying echoed in my ears, a sound I knew I would never forget.
I saw that white-haired lady. She felt familiar, yet at the same time, she felt distant. Like someone I used to know but forgot over time.
Her movements were fluid, effortless. Every strike she made was precise, devastating. She killed many vampires that day.
She was like a killer of vampires, born solely for that purpose.
But her wrath did not stop there. She went on a rampage to the vampire island.
How she found it, no one knows. But she found it, and she destroyed it.
Entire bloodlines were wiped out in a single night. The vampire race, proud and ancient, was brought to its knees.
The island that had stood for millennia was reduced to rubble and ash. The ocean around it turned red with blood, and the stench of death lingered for months.
...
Later, we learned that the lady seemed to be searching for the Vampire Prince, and he was suspected of being hidden among the humans.
Then another massacre started. She learned the Vampire Prince was hiding in a city. To find him and kill him, she entered that city.
A few [Origin] rankers tried to stop her. But it was futile. She moved through them like they were nothing. Like they were made of paper.
In the end, she killed the Vampire Prince. In the crossfire, thousands of normal citizens and hundreds of rankers died.
A small part of the city was left in ruins. It was only after killing the vampire prince that the lady finally calmed down.
The rage in her eyes faded, replaced by something hollow and empty.
She stood amidst the destruction, her white hair stained with blood, and for a moment, she looked like a statue of grief.
Nobody knew who she was. Nobody knew how she had so much power. But everyone knew one thing: they should not get on her bad side.
People were afraid. Rankers were terrified. And the enemies, the wraiths, were horrified.
She had become the center of attention for the entire world.
After calming down, she went to the Council. She and the higher-ups came to an agreement. The information was extremely secretive, but a rumor started to fly in the Council.
"We cannot call that lady by her name. We will call her Sovereign automatically."
I did not believe it. There was no way such a thing existed. It was impossible. I dismissed it as fear and superstition.
But deep down, a part of me wondered. The thought lingered in my mind, refusing to leave.
No matter how hard I tried to dismiss it, the rumor clung to me like a shadow. What kind of being could not be called by name?
...
The following day, my fiancée, Mira, called me. Her voice was excited.
"Luke, she’s alive! She’s alive! Come to this address. Let’s go meet her."
I was momentarily confused as I asked,
"Who’s alive?"
Mira paused for a bit and said,
"...I will text you that with the address."
-Beep. -Beep. -Beep.
I sighed helplessly. It seemed she was busy.
Then Mira’s message arrived. I opened it curiously. But upon reading the first line, my eyes widened.
---
Elowyn is alive.
Address...
---
How was she alive?
That was the first thought that came to my mind. And I hated it.
I should have felt glad and happy. But instead, I felt afraid of a certain thought.
Elowyn had disappeared two years ago in the Death Valley manifestation passage.
And a few days ago, from that place, a lady appeared. Now, Elowyn, who was assumed dead, had come back.
It wasn’t that hard to piece together. The lady with white hair was Elowyn.
No wonder she had felt familiar.
Then I requested my superior for a few days off.
Soon, I was informed by my superior that I was granted leave. I left to meet Mira and Elowyn.
...
I met with Mira, and together we went to the place where Elowyn was currently staying.
It was a small, peaceful island, one of the properties of the Strix family. It was full of greenery, with a massive villa in the center.
The air was fresh and clean, a stark contrast to the blood-soaked battlefields I had grown used to.
We finally arrived and met them: Elowyn and her family. And sure enough, it was just as I had guessed.
Elowyn was the white-haired lady.
Elowyn’s parents were also currently staying with her. Clearly, they had missed their daughter for the past two years.
Seeing Elowyn’s mother’s tearful eyes, I could not help but think about Lady Martha.
Soon, Elowyn’s parents left, allowing us to catch up with Elowyn.
I opened my mouth and greeted her,
"It has been a while... Sovereign?"
Hearing my own words, I paused and could not help but chuckle. Maybe it was because I was thinking about those rumors. I unconsciously called her Sovereign.
Then I cleared my throat and said,
"Ahem, sorry about that. So, where were you for the past two years, Sovereign?"
My eyes widened slightly. I had not made a mistake this time. I had clearly intended to say Elowyn.
With that realization, I muttered her name alone, but the word that left my lips was different.
"Sovereign!"
I closed my eyes. The rest of the day passed in the blink of an eye, like a passing dream.
...
Time passed.
Now, it had been three years since Lady Martha had died.
I brought a bouquet of flowers and went to the cemetery. Ever since Elowyn’s emergence, the world had entered a period of peace.
The wraiths did not dare to attack humans. Even the borderlands were relatively peaceful.
But deep down, I had a feeling that this peaceful atmosphere was a sign of impending disaster.
Shaking my head, I went to the cemetery. But as soon as I reached Lady Martha’s grave, my eyes widened in shock.
My body trembled. My hands shook. The bouquet in my hand almost slipped.
A man with silver hair was leaning against the tree, drinking from a wine bottle.
I immediately recalled Cael, who had sat beneath the same tree, leaning in the same posture, drinking in the same way.
The silver-haired man’s face was slightly similar to Cael’s. Or rather, Cael’s face was similar to this silver-haired man’s.
Sensing my gaze, the silver-haired man looked in my direction and opened his crimson eyes.
He was none other than... James Vayne, my father.
And it became a day I would never forget. My father’s words, the truth... those were things I was not willing to accept at that time.
That was also my first day drinking wine.
...
Back in the present, in Karyal City.
Luke put the empty wine bottle aside and stared down at the night city.
The different types of lights glowed, giving the city an amazing look.
After coming back to the past, he had planned many things and executed many things.
One such plan was to kill the Vampire Prince.
With the knowledge of the past, Luke knew the Vampire Prince would come to District Kazi for the Demonic Vampire Mask.
During the selections for Class S, when students needed to earn merit points, Luke searched for any missions in District Kazi and immediately accepted one.
Recalling the student’s bullying of Cael incident, Luke decided to invite Cael’s team for the joint mission.
But when Luke saw Kira in the team, he was shocked. He knew she was none other than the puppet used by the vampires.
The mission proceeded as planned, with a few hiccups.
But Luke did not know where the mask had been hidden. So, he decisively used Death Radiances, a skill involving a battle of wills. It was a double-edged skill.
If one won, the opponent would gain all the memories of the loser, and the loser would die.
Using that skill, Luke gained all the memories of the old vampire and learned where the mask was located.
His personal mission was complete and bait was set.
Now Luke just had to wait for the Vampire Prince to come and take the bait.
Luke let out a breath.
He slowly stood up while shaking his head.
For some reason, he was feeling bittersweet. Maybe it was because he had recalled his past.
Or maybe it was because he knew the peace would not last.
But Luke did not dwell on it. Then his mobile rang. He received a message from Cael.
Luke raised an eyebrow and checked the message.
"Come and get me out of here."
