Chapter 301: True Legend? False Legend?
"You children really gave this old man quite a scare."
As his tense emotions settled, he finally noticed something else.
The maids serving tea and snacks all wore blank expressions, mechanically carrying out their tasks without saying a single word.
Shen Kai frowned slightly.
"...What’s wrong with them?"
Su Mo spread his hands innocently.
"We arrived before you did and decided to wait here."
He casually gestured toward the surrounding maids.
"I was worried they might accidentally leak our whereabouts or create unnecessary trouble, so I temporarily placed them under an illusion."
Shen Kai’s brows knitted together.
"They won’t be harmed... will they?"
He didn’t question Su Mo’s caution. Given the current situation, taking precautions was only natural.

Still... These girls had faithfully served their family for many years. They weren’t talented cultivators, nor were they involved in the sect’s internal conflicts. Naturally, he didn’t want them getting hurt because of circumstances beyond their control.
Su Mo smiled reassuringly.
"Don’t worry. At worst, they’ll feel a little more tired than usual after waking up."
Hearing that answer, Shen Kai visibly relaxed.
"That’s good."
After another glance at the dazed maids, he shifted his attention back toward the three youngsters before him.
His expression became somewhat emotional.
"I truly never expected you children to experience something unpleasant like this after coming here."
He slowly shook his head.
"Don’t worry. I’ve already spoken to Haruto on your behalf."
"As long as I’m here, he won’t dare keep any of you inside the White Moon Sect by force."
The room suddenly became unusually quiet.
Su Mo and Yang Qingxi exchanged a glance. Song Meilin, lowered her eyes with a complicated expression.
Seeing their reactions, Shen Kai gradually frowned.
Had he... said something wrong?
Just as he was about to ask again, Su Mo gently placed his teacup onto the table. He looked directly at Shen Kai.
"I’m afraid...this matter isn’t nearly as simple as you think."
Those words caused Shen Kai’s brows to knit together.
He studied the expressions of everyone present. None of them looked relieved after hearing his promise. Instead, they all appeared unusually serious, especially Song Meilin, whose complicated expression seemed to hide countless unspeakable emotions.
A faint sense of unease quietly rose within his heart.

"What do you mean, Su Mo?"
He unconsciously straightened his posture.
"...Isn’t this entire matter simply because Haruto wanted to recruit you by force?"
"That’s only part of the story," Su Mo said, calmly after listening to Shen Kai’s explanation. "Tell me, Qingxi’s Granduncle... how much do you know about your sect’s ancestor, Wu Taeyong?"
Shen Kai looked at him with slight confusion before answering without hesitation.
"Of course I know about him. He was a remarkable man, someone worthy of anyone’s admiration. Back then, it was precisely because I learned about his deeds that I stopped wandering the cultivation world and chose to settle down in the White Moon Sect."
A nostalgic smile unconsciously appeared on his face as memories from many years ago resurfaced.
"Centuries ago, the White Moon Sect suffered an unprecedented invasion by the Pishachas. The situation had become so desperate that the entire sect was forced to evacuate. At that time, the sect possessed very few experts, and everyone was under the protection of the Second Generation Sect Master, a Nascent Soul powerhouse who personally escorted the disciples and civilians away from the battlefield."
His voice gradually slowed, as though he were recounting the story of a legend he had admired all his life.
"Unfortunately, during the evacuation, they unknowingly walked straight into an enormous encirclement prepared by the Pishachas. Thousands of them surrounded the fleeing disciples from every direction, leaving almost no possibility of escape."
Shen Kai slowly exhaled before continuing.
"The Ancestor had already retired from public affairs by then. He could’ve remained hidden and allowed others to shoulder that burden, yet when he saw the sect facing destruction, he stepped forward without the slightest hesitation. Faced with thousands of Pishachas, he volunteered to stay behind alone so everyone else could escape."
His eyes unconsciously revealed admiration.
"Perhaps things would’ve been easier if the Second Generation Sect Master had remained to fight beside him, but someone still had to protect the disciples. If both of them stayed behind, the younger generation would’ve been slaughtered."
A faint smile appeared on Shen Kai’s face.
"The Ancestor simply told his disciple that he didn’t need anyone’s help. He said the future of the White Moon Sect rested with those children, not with an old man who already had one foot inside the grave. He ordered his disciple to escort everyone to safety and refused to let him argue."
For a moment, the room became completely quiet.
"The Second Generation Sect Master ultimately obeyed."
"He hardened his heart, led everyone away, and returned as quickly as possible after ensuring the disciples had escaped."
Shen Kai slowly lowered his gaze.
"But..."

"...he was too late."
"When he returned, the Ancestor had already fallen."
His voice became noticeably softer.
"Consumed by grief and fury, the Second Generation Sect Master charged alone into the battlefield. He fought as though he had already abandoned all hope of surviving, slaughtering countless Grade Two and Grade Three Pishachas until the entire battlefield became soaked in dark blood."
"He won. But victory came at an unbearable cost."
"The corpse poison of the Pishachas had already invaded his body too deeply. He survived only because the powerful Yang Energy within him barely suppressed the poison."
Shen Kai let out another quiet sigh.
"After returning, he rebuilt the sect from the ruins, but his condition deteriorated day by day. Back then, the White Moon Sect’s medical inheritance was still incomplete, and the secular world possessed even fewer methods of treating such poison. Three months after that battle, he appointed the Ancestor’s descendant as the next Sect Master before quietly passing away."
He gently shook his head.
"Those were the darkest days in the sect’s history. Fortunately, the Second Generation Sect Master had exterminated so many Pishachas that very few appeared during the following years, giving the White Moon Sect enough time to recover."
His expression gradually softened.
"They...were truly legends."
